Cardinals Clinch State Bid With Win Over Lions!
With a 3-1 comeback win over the Lions, the Cardinals clinched a spot in the State Tournament. The Lions took the lead in the top of the 4th, but the Cardinals tied it in the bottom half of the inning and added 2 more in the 5th for the win. The Cardinal defense kept them in the game with several big plays. With no outs in the 1st inning, catcher Ian Mayfield made a perfect throw to shortstop Donovan Mills to catch Lions' leadoff hitter David Golden on an steal attempt. Then, with 2 outs, third baseman Jared Staton fielded a hard bouncer from Lions' cleanup batter Joseph Harris and threw him out at first to end the Lions' threat. After a leadoff double by the Lions' Deshon Pride in the 2nd, Cardinal pitcher Brandon Schmidt fanned the next 3 Lions to end the inning. In the 3rd, Cardinal first baseman Zach Mitchell made an excellent play to control a grounder that took a bad hop and made the unassisted out on the Lions' Golden for the second out of the inning. With 1 out in the 4th, catcher Ian Mayfield teamed up with 3rd baseman Jared Staton to throw out the Lions' Calvin Wilbon on a steal attempt. Pitcher Brandon Schmidt struck out 3 Lions in the 6th, including power hitter Deshon Pride, to end the game. In a superior performance, Schmidt struck out 12 and went the distance for the Cardinals. Alex Mitchell had a game leading 2 stolen bases. Mitchell, James Simms, and Brandon Schmidt each scored once for the Cardinals. In the 4th with 2 outs and the bases empty, Alex Mitchell singled to left field and then stole 2nd and 3rd. Mitchell scored the tying run on a single to right field by his brother Zach. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 5th, pinch hitter Davonte Hokes drew a leadoff walk. Pinch runner James Simms stole 2nd to move into scoring position. Then, with 2 outs, Simms scored the go ahead run on a hit to left field from Cardinal RBI leader Brandon Schmidt. Schmidt stole 2nd and scored on a hard shot down the left field line by cleanup hitter Ian Mayfield to put the Cardinals up 3-1. With the win, the Cardinals clinched a trip to State and will face the Mudhens tomorrow night at 6:00 in the District Championship game.
