Cardinals Edge Sharks 3-2 in Opening Round of State
The Cardinals opened the State Tournament with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Atkins Sharks. Cardinals pitcher Brandon Schmidt may have saved his best game of the season for State. Schmidt struck out an unbelievable 16 Sharks in 6 innings of work to pick up the complete game victory. Second baseman Jordan Deaton made the defensive play of the game when he caught a hard bouncer to retire the Sharks' big cleanup hitter Hunter Johnsten for the 1st out of the 6th inning. On offense with one out in the top of the 1st, Dale Abraham used his great speed to beat out an infield single. Then Abraham, again using his wheels, advanced to 2nd on an infield hit by Brandon Schmidt. Abraham and Schmidt caught the Sharks off guard by pulling off a double steal after a strikeout to advance into scoring position. Alex Mitchell came through with a double to right field to score Abraham and Schmidt to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. In the 4th with the score knotted at 2-2, the Cardinals' Josh Sunwall singled and stole 2nd and 3rd. Sunwall scored the go ahead run on a one-out sacrifice by Jordan Deaton for a 3-2 Cardinal lead. Jared Staton was the only Cardinal to reach base safely on every turn at bat, going 2-2 and adding a base on balls. The RBI leaders for the Cardinals were Alex Mitchell with 2 and Jordan Deaton with 1. Josh Sunwall had a game high 3 stolen bases, and Alex Mitchell added 2. Hit leaders with 2 each were Jordan Deaton, Jared Staton, and Alex Mitchell. The Cardinals now advance to play a second round game against the 1st seed from District 4, Dardanelle Ever So Fast, who defeated District 7 #3 Southside Bee Branch in the first round. Game time is Tuesday, July 11, at 8:00pm in Dover.
