Southwestern Edged by Legendary Boyertown Bears
May 30, 2009 - The Boyertown Bears, the defending 2008 Pennsylvania American Legion State Champions, edged a victory over SW on May 30, 8 - 6. The game was played at legendary Bears Stadium in Boyertown, the site of numerous state and national regional championship tournaments.
SW hurler Kurt Seiders held the Bears hitless and scoreless for three innnings despite some SW defensive miscues. Seiders was calm and determined in the face of Bears' batters who were bigger and taller than most of his teammates. His consistent performance despite SW's defensive problems was impressive.
SW led 3 - 0 in the fourth when their promising young southpaw Eric Moul entered the game. Moul was followed by Jack Kercher and David Walker over the rest of the nine inning event. Unfortunately, timely Bears hitting and five official SW errors doomed SW's chances of upsetting the Bears.
SW whacked 10 solid hits off of Bears pitching, thus outhitting their opponents, but it wasn't enough to quell the damage of SW's defensive letdown. The Bears led 8 - 3 in the eighth inning when SW, refusing to surrender, scored three more times to rattle the Bears' nerves. David Walker the held the Bears from further scoring but SW couldn't plate anyone in the ninth despite having a couple baserunners.
