Rules of the Game

*DEK HOCKEY “ICING”

If the ball is shot from behind your own team’s goal, down the entire playing surface, and past the opposing teams goal without being touched by any opposing player, “icing” is called and the play resumes with a face–off at the nearest spot to where the ball was originally shot. There is no “icing” rule in roller hockey.

*DEK HOCKEY “OFF-SIDES”

If a player precedes the ball with both feet past the center line into the opposing team’s half of the playing surface, or, if a player shoots the ball into the opposing team’s zone before all of his team has “cleared” and returned to their own half of the floor, “off-sides” is called and play resumes with a face-off at the nearest center court face-off spot to where the infraction occurred. A team will be given the opportunity to “clear the zone” before the whistle is blown.
There is no “off-sides” rule in roller hockey.

* It is STAR’s practice to only liberally enforce both “off-sides” and “icing” in our Junior Divisions where the emphasis is placed on instruction rather then penalization, especially during the first few weeks of each program. Both infractions are fully enforced in our Senior Division.

CARRYING THE BALL/PUCK

Play will be stopped whenever a player catches or carries the ball/puck with his hands and holds it for more then 2 seconds. Play will resume with a face-off at the nearest spot to where the infraction occurred.

COVERING THE BALL/PUCK

Play will be stopped whenever a player, other then the goalie, falls on or covers the ball/puck in an attempt to slow down the play. Play will resume with a face-off at the nearest spot to where the infraction occurred. If, at the discretion of the referee, the infraction prevented the opposing team from scoring a goal, a penalty shot may be awarded.

HAND PASS

Play will be stopped whenever a player uses his hand(s) to pass or direct the ball/puck to one of his teammates without the ball/puck being touched by any of the opposing players. Play will resume with a face-off at the nearest spot to where the infraction occurred.

FAN INTERFERENCE

Play will be stopped whenever the path of the ball/puck is re-directed by a fan, whenever the ball/puck is cleared out of play, or whenever the referee deems that a continuation of play may jeopardize the safety of any players or their families. When this occurs, play will resume with a face-off at the nearest spot to where the infraction occurred.
