LEAGUE AGE EXPLAINED

Cal Ripken & Babe Ruth Baseball use "league age" to determine a player's eligibility to participate in Regular Season programs and Travel or Post-Season Tournament Teams.  League and Travel Team age equals the child's age on or before April 30 of the current year.

Local Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth Organizations (like the SYO) are given considerable latitude concerning the age at which children can begin to participate in local programs like our Instructional, Rookie, Junior Cal Ripken, Senior Cal Ripken, & Babe Ruth leagues. The SYO allows children to participate in our local programs by age designation and/or current grade level.  No player choosing to play at grade level will be allowed to play on a lower level tournament team.  For example a player who chooses to participate at grade level (Grade 5) and chooses Cal Senior, will not be allowed to tryout for the 10U travel team, even if he is 10 year old on April 30.

Typical Ages by Grade in School

Kindergarten - 5 & 6

1st grade - 6 & 7,

2nd grade - 7 & 8,

3rd grade - 8 & 9,

4th grade - 9 & 10,

5th grade - 10 & 11,

6th grade - 11 & 12,

7th grade - 12 & 13,

8th grade - 13 & 14,

9th grade - 14 & 15,

10th grade - 15 & 16,

However, we are required to use league age to determine when a child is too old to participate on SYO Travel Teams.  For example, a child who turns age 13 on or before April 30, regardless of grade, cannot play Cal Ripken Senior Baseball in that calendar year.  Similarly, a child who turns age 11 on or before April 30, regardless of grade, cannot participate in a 10 year old tournament. If this seems confusing, rest assured that we agree, but understand the rules and apply them evenly and fairly.

*IN BOTH SOFTBALL ASSOCIATIONS IT APPEARS THAT AGE DETERMINATION FOR THE CURRENT SEASON (2017) IS BASED ON YOUR DAUGHTER'S AGE ON DECEMBER 31, OF THE PREVIOUS SEASON (2016).
