Jr. World Championships recap

Shannyn J. Gillespie 8.4.08

Team USA places third overall behind team champion Russia 61 points and team runners-up Japan 52 points with 43 overall points and 1 Jr. World Champion Adeline Gray (67kg). The FILA Junior World Championships were held in Istanbul, Turkey, July 29-August 3, 2008.

Gray will start her first season at the U.S. Olympic Education Center (USOEC), located on the campus of Northern Michigan University (NMU), this fall as a high school senior at Marquette Senior High School.

The USOEC will also hone the skills of 3 other 2008 Jr. World medalists and participants this year or 2008-2009. USOEC veteran Alyssa Lampe (48kg) and USOEC newcomer Helen Maroulis (51kg) both won bronze medals this year in Turkey at the Jr. Worlds while second year USOEC athlete Schuyler Brown (63kg) lost her first match and was unable to wrestle back because her opponent was subsequently beaten.

Lampe wins her second Jr. World medal in as many years while Maroulis wins her first Jr. World medal and will enter Marquette Senior High School (Marquette, MI) this fall with Gray. Brown graduated from MSHS last spring and will enter NMU this fall as a freshman at the USOEC.

Tatiana Padilla (59kg) also won her second Jr. World Championships medal in as many years by bringing home a bronze medal.

Vicki Anthony (44kg) and Micheala Hutchison (55kg) both had opportunities to win bronze medals and ended up with very impressive 5th places overall in their first Jr. World Championships.

Paige Rife (72kg) lost her first match and did not place (DNP) due to her opponent losing in the next round. Under new international rules, wrestlers are only allowed to wrestle back for medals if their opponent makes the finals.

Coaches for Team USA were volunteer coaches Rob Eiter, Donnie Stephens, and USA Wrestling Developmental Coach "Coach Izzy".
