Since the Knights opening week defeat to Center Point-Urbana, they have racked up leads by half that are insurmountable for their opponents.

Fortunately for Union, this past Friday was no different.

The Union Knights cruised past the Cascade Cougars, jumping out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and by half, were leading by a comfortable 28 points, 35-7.

Usually it's the ground game that establishes the offense for Union. However, with the arm of Jay Scheel and an arsenal of receivers at Scheel's disposal, the air attack was on display - in record-setting fashion.

Scheel picked apart the Cougars' defense, completing 10-of-13 passes for a whopping 293 yards. The 293-yard performance was an individual/team record with many of those yards going to senior Trev Hadachek. The dynamic duo connected on a record 97-yard touchdown strike which accounted for over half of Hadachek's 191 receiving yards, also an individual/team record. Hadachek also accounted for two more Scheel touchdown passes while Mitchell Dierks was the recipient of the fourth.

Aside from the Scheel-to-Hadachek show, the running game also fared well against the 3-2 Cougars. Andrew Osuna accumulated 66 yards on 17 carries while Scheel added 63 yards of his own, one being a touchdown from three yards out.

While the offense was nothing but spectacular, the Knight defense quietly shut down Cascade.

The Knights forced two interceptions, both by Hadachek, and Will Crees recovered one fumble. Union totaled six sacks and limited the Cougars to just 65 yards rushing. With the Knights out to a commanding lead in the early-going, Cascade was forced to pass for a majority of the night. Jace Hadachek led the tackling department, racking up 11 total tackles along with 1.5 sacks.

With the non-district win, the Knights move to 4-1 overall and remain 2-0 in 2A District 3 play. Union returns to La Porte City next week to take on the undefeated Waukon Indians in a crucial district matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
