Union rally falls short, 29-22, vs New Hampton in FB State Playoffs

The Union Knight football team fell short Monday night at New Hampton, 29-22.

With the halftime score being 15-8, the Knights were within striking distance behind a defense that was shocking the rushing attack of New Hampton. New Hampton was forced to go to the air on several key third and long situations and converted.

A huge special teams play by the punt return unit converted a blocked punt into a Knight touchdown to give Union hope in the second half. The Knight offense also started to click in the third quarter; however, a crucial block in the back penalty negated the longest touchdown run of the game.

In the fourth quarter the Knight defense came up with a big stop and the offense utilized two minute drill to move the chains with less than two minutes on the clock. The drive ended with an interception and New Hampton took a knee to run out the clock with the final score being New Hampton 29, Union 22.

The 2009 senior class leaves a strong foundation to build upon over the past three years, winning more games than any class in the school's 22 year history. Their sophomore year in 2A the team record was (6-3), the junior year in 3A record (7-3) with a sub state game, and this year's 3A record of (8-3) finishing second in 3A District 4, winning the sub state game over Oelwein, and playing a first round game vs New Hampton.

Thanks to the Union cheerleaders and Coach Kayleen for their efforts to rally the fans all season long!
