Knight win first post season game, 41-13!

For the first time in 22 years of Union football the Knights hosted a post season game and won big 41-13 over the Oelwein Huskies. Ironically, this was the final game on the current field as plans are underway for a complete remodeling and upgrade of the football game field and practice facilities.

Outstanding defense shut out Oelwein in the first half (21-0) as the Huskies were without starting QB Paul Yokas after he broke a leg in his last regular season game. The Knights held Oelwein's leading rusher, Sr Matt Kastli, to 58 yards in 25 attempts. In addition the Huskies had less than 100 yards passing on the night. Leading tacklers for the Knights were Josh Dunkelberger with 11T and 3 tackles for loss, Weston Hennings with 10 T and 1 TFL, Justin Macal with 10T and Blake Clark with 9T and .5 TFL. The Union defense created two turnovers with a fumble recovery by Brad Siebel and a pick by Jared Wauters for a 13 yd return.

Offensively the Knighs put up 21 points in the first half including an eight minute drive to start the game. Steven McGarvey (12 of 19 for 175 yds, 3TDs) connected with Jared Wauters (5 rec., 111 yds, 1TD) and Austin Bunz (4 rec., 47 yds, 2 TDs) to spark three touchdowns via the air. On the ground, Wesley Burnside continued to mount up yardage with 26 rushes for 138 yards and 3 TDs (5, 21, and 56 yards).

In addition, two Knights were honored for the past week performances with Austin Bunz getting KWWL's Play of the Week (announced tonight) and Wes Burnside was recognized as Prep of the Week by the Waterloo Courier.

Stay tuned for futher updates. The Knights will take the show on the road at New Hampton with the kickoff being Monday night at 7pm.
