Rapid Recap: Union wins first ever 3A State Championship

By Cheyne Reiter

Say it ain't so!

The Union Knights captured their first-ever state title Saturday night in another thrilling come-from-behind victory.

The Knights found themselves trailing 14-13 midway through the fourth quarter; their backs against the wall yet again.

Once again, Union found a way.

Jay Scheel connected with a wide-open Brad Gallup for what proved to be the winning score.

The Knights defense closed out the Vikings final drive in Union territory as Brenden Kuhn came away with the game-winning interception.

A stunning season; one that will be talked about for years to come.

An unforgettable experience transpired for each Knight player, coach, and fan following the victory.

Adversity? Forget about it. This team proved that nothing can stand in their way. The Knights hit their stride following their Maquoketa regular season defeat and never looked back.

The IHSAA 3A football state championship of 2011 belongs to the Knights of Union. Two communities once divided, now as one, together.

In dramatic fashion, the roller coaster season has come to a close. Except in a rare occurrence, the roller coaster finishes at the top this time.

As champions.
