Rapid Recap: Big second half allows Union to bury Bobcats, 42-17

By Cheyne Reiter

The Knights overcame last week's loss to Maquoketa, an hour delay, and a tough Western Dubuque squad all in one night. The Knights were coming off a 35-15 defeat to Maquoketa at home and faced a tall task in Epworth. The Knights scored 21 second half points to win 42-17 in a crucial game with playoff implications.

Just minutes into the game, power went out at the field as well as the entire town of Epworth. Union's Jay Scheel had just scored on a muffed punt return by the Bobcats to put the Knights up 7-3 before the lights went out. Game totals are not available yet, but Burnside and the Union offense had a big night. The Knights defense pitched a shutout in the second half as Union led 21-17 heading into the locker rooms.

Union now moves to 5-2 (3-2 3A District 5) while Western Dubuque, Epworth falls to 5-2 (4-1). Western Dubuque travels to Maquoketa 6-1 (5-0) next week with a district title on the line and with a Bobcat loss, Union could still claim the No. 2 seed if they win their last two games vs. Marion and Vinton-Shellsburg. Union will be hosting Marion next week for their last regular season home game.
