Rapid Recap: Knights end Marion's Playoff Dreams with 45-14 Blowout

By Cheyne Reiter

The Union Knights ran past the traditional powerhouse of the Marion Indians tonight by a final score of 45-14.

Momentum was largely in favor of the Knights as the Indians muffed the opening kickoff and started inside their own 5-yard line. Following a three-and-out by the Indians, Knights kicker Brady Petersen nailed a 41-yard field to give the Knights a 3-0 lead, a lead they would not let go of for the entire night.

Wes Burnside tacked on four touchdowns to his season total and seemed to be back at 100 percent health-wise. In addition, Jay Scheel ignited the Union offense with a blazing 87-yard touchdown scamper in his fourth consecutive start at quarterback.

After pitching a shutout in the second half last week against Western Dubuque, the Knights first-string defense limited the Marion offense to just seven points total.

With the playoffs nearing, Union has their full arsenal of weapons at hand and those weapons were on full display tonight.

With the win, the Knights move to 6-2 and 4-2 in 3A District 5 while Marion falls to 4-4 and 2-4 in district play, officially eliminating the Indians from playoff contention.
