Talk about it in Off the Record
Union quarterback Jay Scheel stepped in behind center during the course of his sophomore year of football. The result was a Class 3A title that showed the Knights were one of the best teams within state borders.

"It was really fun. We were down after the loss but we got a lot better."

The success was something Scheel expected coming in.

"I wasn't really surprised. We came together as a team."

Scheel spent the winter focused on another sport.

"I have been in basketball and I've been lifting weights at 6:30."

Two areas are what Scheel is trying to get better at before the 2012 season.

"It is reading defenses. I need to work on that and just becoming more calm."

Scheel has received early attention from two colleges.

"I've been to a visit at Iowa and I got a questionnaire from Iowa State. That has been about it."

The trek to Iowa was something that Scheel enjoyed.

"It was really fun. I got to talk to Kirk Ferentz one-on-one and then we got a tour."
