A Word From Your Coaches - 2009 !
Mississauga Majors AAA
THROWING - Develop accuracy, quickness and powerful throws.
- Proper footwork and alignment is key to becoming an accurate thrower.
- Prepare yourself mentally to practice perfect drills. Practice
does not make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect.
- Be committed to repetition. Once you can practice a skill with consistent repetition, your muscle memory will take over and it will become second nature.
- Maintain excellent flexibility in your arms and shoulders. Stay loose, stretch out properly.
FIELDING - Expect the ball to be hit to you every pitch.
- Mentally prepare yourself before every pitch.
- When fielding, stay low and be ready to take quick steps to the ball.
- Keep your eyes and head on the ball until it is in your
glove.
- Being physically ready is just as important as being mentally and
skillfully ready.
- You cannot be afraid of getting dirty.
HITTING - Understand the strike zone, what is a ball what is a strike.
- Develop your hit zone, look for the type and location of the pitch
you hit best and develop the ability to hit all pitches in the strike
zone.
- know your strengths and weaknesses as a hitter.
- Confidence. If you think you can hit, you will hit!
- Expect every pitch to be your hit pitch.
- Hit the ball hard somewhere all the time. Don't hit the ball out of
the park some of the time.
PITCHING - In order to pitch effectively, you have to develop three
things; control, consistency and the ability to change speeds.
- Over time, develop three basic pitches, fastball, change-up and a
breaking ball.
- You have to be a self-reliant thinker. You cannot expect the coaches or
your catcher to make all the calls for you.
- Understand hitters, pitch selection and location. Keep hitters off
balance.
- Prepare to take excellent care of your arm. Ice and run after each time
you pitch.
- If you cannot throw strikes you cannot pitch.
BASE RUNNING - Smart base runners use their eyes first, legs second.
- commit to working hard on base. Your job is not done once you have gotten
on base. Be aggressive, put pressure on the infield and outfield to
make mistakes.
- Judgment, alertness, instinct and understanding will turn a medium
skilled base runner into a excellent base runner.
- Know every situation when your on base. When to run and when not to run.
