Staff Report

New Britain Brawlers 45

Vermont Ravens 13

The New Britain Brawlers came in looking like a play-off ready team as they defeated the Ravens Sunday afternoon convincingly with a 45-13 victory.  Vermont saw their 5-game win streak come to an end.

Brawler stand-out #1 Darence Dalgoto scored 3 times and he wasted no time scoring his first as he took the opening kick-off 79 yards all the way to pay-dirt.  Brawlers 6-0 14:45 left first quarter as the extra point effort was no good due to a bad snap.  There would be no other scoring in the quarter as after the early fireworks both teams would struggle offensively.

Dalgoto scored his second at the 9:41 mark of the second as he took a Dave Donahue pass, which was deflected by a Raven, and avoided one tackler on his way to a 64-yard touchdown reception.

The Brawlers would get the ball right back after forcing another punt by the Ravens and in pretty good field position.  Two plays later, inside the 30-yard line, Donahue was forced out of the pocket and as he scrambled right he tried to throw back over the middle.  Vermont free safety #31 Jeric Tyler’s eyes lit up and he stepped in front of the intended receiver snatching the ball away, and what has become somewhat expected amongst the Raven faithful, returned the interception 95 yards for a touchdown.  Kicker #81 Sean Lamphere’s point after was good to bring Vermont to within one score 12-7 at the time.  Tyler also picked off Donahue later in the same quarter and made a 35 yard return up the left sidelines stopping another threat.

New Britain’s defense did a good job of keeping Vermont off balance most of the day and they only allowed one offensive touchdown.  Raven quarterback #7 Kenny Phillips II scrambled right from the 11-yard line and using a nice block by receiver #19 Chad Carlsen was able to dive and stretching placing the ball on the goal line for the touchdown.  The two-point conversion was no good.

Donahue connected two more times through the air with a 73-yard touchdown to #39 Eric Dudley, and an 11-yard touchdown to #24 Kendrick Cruz.  The Brawlers also scored twice on the ground as #9 Amuel Blair scored from 8 yards and #21 Mike Williams from 2 yards respectively.

The Ravens defense intercepted Donahue 4 times with the 2 from Tyler to go along with defensive end #91 Michael Fulton’s interception of a two-point conversion attempt and then returning it 30 yards up the left sideline.  Defensive back #1 Matthew Gomes made a scoring save as he intercepted a Donahue pass in the end zone.

Vermont utilized both of their quarterbacks during the game and together Phillips and #14 Clayton Torres completed 13 passes for 129 yards.  The longest, a 22 yarder, completed to #4 Jaren Jeffcoat from Phillips.  Jeffcoat had 4 catches on the day for 63 yards.  Carlsen had 2 catches for 32 yards and FB/SS #20 Roy Rose had 3 catches for 31 yards.

Vermont finishes the regular season with a 6-2 record while New Britain improves to 6-1 and play the CT. Gamblers next Saturday.

The Ravens have next week off before returning to action on Sunday, Sept. 24th with a quarter final play-off game played at Norwich University, Kick-off time and opponent are still to be determined.
