NEWS FROM THE WILLOWS

4 October, 2014

It appears we have seen a lot of Ipswich teams this week and considering the results we have no desire (in the nicest possible way) to see them again for a while. On Wednesday we played Ipswich Wanderers and with the match sponsored by committee members Vic, Neil and Richard we hoped their guests would witness a welcome three points, we certainly had the chances but a lack of killer instinct in front of goal meant Wanderers went back to Ipswich with a 1-0 victory and the three points. The next night we hosted Wanderers U18 team and they beat us a bit more comprehensively by 4 goals to 1. With Saturday approaching and Ipswich Athletic reserves on the horizon to play the “A” team we wondered if it would be another defeat to the “Big Town” teams and so it proved with a 3-2 defeat on the main pitch, going 2-0 down does not help but we did fight back with goals from Taylor Pooley and Ben Robinson but fell short in obtaining the final goal. The reserves progressed through to the next round of the Suffolk senior reserve team K.O. cup courtesy of Melton St Audrys inability to raise a side. It is certainly a sad situation when club officials work hard to provide a club and then individuals cannot be bothered to turn up and play due to other commitments but I suppose that is a sign of the times. In direct opposition to the previous sentence we must pay tribute to Trevor Newman who after many years loyal service and we estimate over 700 appearances decided to retire at the end of last season, starting as a 16 year old in the first team he always gave 100% and must have been the managers first name on the team sheet, Trevor we salute you for your service to the club and I am sure he may still represent the club in another capacity in the future. Also hanging up his boots is James Tatham who joined us from Bury 7 years ago and scored some very important goals for us and was also excellent on club nights out even if he usually disappeared early on. The first team travelled to Clacton and a match that will not last long in the memory did provide us with a much needed three points courtesy of an Andrew Wood goal scored after 80 minutes. There is a rumour circulating the club that the floodlight saga (up,down,up,down,up,down) may not be quite over yet so watch this space for more revelations in this very dysfunctional club. Wednesday will see Gorleston visit the meadow for a Thurlow Nunn premier fixture and that will be a tough encounter as despite losing many players and manager during the close season they have made a very good start to this season’s campaign. Other fixtures include the reserves at Gorleston on Tuesday night and the U18 team hosting Stowmarket Town on Thursday. Along with the walking football on Monday nights it’s another busy week so hopefully we will see you at one of these matches.
