NEWS FROM THE WILLOWS

5 October, 2014

There appears to be one word running through everything to do with the club this week and it is “FLOOD”. It started on Wednesday with the visit of Gorleston when just prior to kick off the “FLOODlights” started to behave with a mind of their own first going off, then coming half on, then off again before coming on to resemble 18 candles in the night sky. I think we had every combination possible on or off and even the whole club plunged into total darkness before everyone gave up and went home at about 8.30. The Chairman hiding in the Burger shed had power all evening and continued to keep serving and adopting a low profile, which was probably best as he would only have shorted something out and burnt the whole place down if he had got involved with electrics. Older readers may remember a dance called the “Hokey Cokey” which I have now witnessed as performed by a set of floodlights. Our apologies to Gorleston F C and we will see them again towards the end of October although I did get the impression both managers were not to displeased as they both claimed to have 4/5 regulars out. The previous evening our reserves had visited Gorleston in the Chell trophy and went down to a very good side 4-0 and I think Gorleston had a couple of lamps out on their lights!! The U18s played Stowmarket at home on Thursday night with the floodlights behaving themselves and went down 2-0 with Stow scoring two very late goals with the last one being an exceptional strike. Here comes that word again with “FLOODS” of goals on Saturday, mostly in the wrong net as the first team exited the F A Vase to a very strong and determined Godmanchester Rovers F C by 7 goals to 1. The reserves went to Lowestoft reserves in the Chell trophy and went down 4-3 with the “A” team playing at home against Benhall reserves and lost 6-2. Only the “B” Side stopped the “FLOODS” of goals with a 0-0 draw away at Bury Wanderers, this was a match notable for the father and son debut of Neil and Edward Ellers with youngster Edward doing a lot more running than his father. Not to be outdone the word is going to appear one more time with the rain on Saturday coming through the home changing room roof to “FLOOD” the changing room, so some players had wet clothes to put on after getting thoroughly soaked during the match. Our best wishes to Godmanchester in the next round and they could go a long way while we mop up and re group for next week.
