As the tropical depression left the New York area saturday night many thought the storm was over. Little did we know that was the quiet before the storm. The real storm came Sunday as the Packers opened their season against thier nemesis the New Jersey Longhorns. Things didn go as the Packers hoped. The Packers defense forced a three and out on the Longhorns first series. On the second play from scrimmage QB Jason Walker scrambled right for 7 yards and stayed down. After several attempts to get back to the huddle he was helped to the sideline. He would return for one more play later but was unable to continue. It is uncertain the extent of the injury to his knee. That left 19 year old rookie QB Angle Nerys at the helm. He did throw 2 TDs on the day but was sacked 4 times, threw one interception and hit countless times. It was a long day for the rookie as he left the game late in the 4th quarter. The injury to Walker was just the beginning because right after a Packer three and out the Horns struck for a TD as hey hit a screen and several missed tackles later they were in the end zone. That would be the theme of the day. "We played on our knees and they kicked our lights out" said Coach Barnes. When asked if it hurt to lose his first game as head coach he responded "that isn't the important part. The important part is this team getting off to a good start. My record as a coach is irrelevant. I'm not worried about hall of fame I'm worried about winning games." We also asked him what went wrong today. Coach Barnes did answer that directly. "We didn't tackle well at all. We missed assignments offensivley and defensively. We just didn't play smart. When you lose like this you have to go back to the drawing board and start over. We have work to do over the bye to get ready for the Punishers." Indeed they do as the Punishers beat the Defending Empire Conference Champion Spartans 12-0 Saturday night.
