The most successful high school football team in California history
The most successful high school football team in California history is not, as most believe, Long Beach Poly or De La Salle-Concord.

    It’s Bakersfield.

According to the CalHiSports State Record Book and Almanac, the Drillers have 667 victories and own the best record since 1900 at 666-230-43.

The Drillers are also the last team to win a state championship, a 38-0 win over Fullerton in 1927.

Interesting then, that after a 79-year-old absence, that Bakersfield has a good shot to reach the final game when the state championships return in 2006.

The California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body of high school sports in the state, and its Federated Council approved in May of 2005 the return of the State Football Championship Bowl Games on Dec. 16 at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

The CIF will pit Northern California and Southern California squads in large (Division I), medium (Div. II) and small (Div. III) Division matchups.

Only Section champions — there are a whopping 46 of them in the state — are eligible for the games, and the teams will be picked the state’s 10 Section commissioners.
