Colerain leads four new teams into Super 25


2008 SUPER 25 RANKINGS


There are four new teams in the first Super 25 regular season high school football rankings. Three of the four defeated defending state champions. No. 10 Colerain is 3-0, including a 13-8 defeat of then-No. 18 St. Xavier (Cincinnati), the Ohio Division I champion, and a 33-18 win vs. then-No. 23 Highlands (Fort Thomas), the Kentucky 5A champion. Lakeland, Fla., joins the rankings at No. 14 after defeating Central Catholic (Pittsburgh), the state 4A champion, 35-0. No. 22 Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) topped Brophy Prep (Phoenix), the defending 5A champ, 10-0 and went on the road to defeat Florida 4A champion Booker T. Washington (Miami) 37-19. No. 24 Plano, Texas, a 2007 state semifinalist, opened with consecutive victories vs. DeSoto 28-20 and Irving MacArthur (Irving) 33-7.

Previous: 1. Results: Marcus Lattimore rushed for 220 yards and three TDs, and Chas Dodd threw three TD passes in a 45-21 defeat of Ridge View (Columbia) Thursday. Lattimore rushed for 179 yards and two TDs as the Rebels defeated North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) 36-14 on Aug. 29. Next: Friday vs. Greer.

2. Trinity, Euless, Texas (1-0)

Previous: 2. Result: Christo Lisika had three carries, two of them for TDs, in a 28-12 defeat of John Curtis (River Ridge, La.) on Sept. 1. Next: Friday at Cedar Hill.

3. Gateway, Monroeville, Pa. (2-0)

Previous: 3. Results: Rob Kalkstein threw three TD passes, and the Gators' defense allowed only 69 total yards in a 56-6 defeat of Baldwin (Pittsburgh) on Friday. Kalkstein passed for two first-half TDs and ran for another in a 45-17 defeat of Penn Hills (Pittsburgh) on Aug. 29. Next: Friday at Greater Latrobe (Latrobe).

4. Don Bosco Prep, Ramsey, N.J. (0-0)

Previous: 4. Result: Idle. Next: Sept. 13 at No. 25 St. Xavier (Cincinnati).

5. Long Beach Poly, Long Beach (1-0)

Previous: 5. Result: Melvin Richardson ran for 124 yards and two TDs, and Daveon Barner had 96 yards and two TDs in a 29-7 defeat of Miami Northwestern (Miami) on Aug. 30. Next: Sept. 19 vs. Newport Harbor (Newport Beach).

6. St. Thomas Aquinas, Fort Lauderdale (2-0)

Previous: 6. Results: James White ran for two TDs in a 49-3 defeat of Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale) on Friday. Ryan Becker passed for 283 yards and three TDs as the Raiders defeated Elder (Cincinnati) 35-24 on Aug. 30. Next: Sept. 26 vs. South Plantation (Plantation).

7. De La Salle, Concord, Calif. (0-0)

Previous: 7. Result: Idle. Next: Saturday at Junipero Serra (San Mateo).

8. Armwood, Seffner, Fla. (2-0)

Previous: 8. Results: Dykerius Cross had one TD catch in a 9-2 victory vs. Plant on Friday, sacking the quarterback for a safety for the other score. Mywan Jackson rushed for one TD and passed for another as the Hawks defeated Lake Gibson (Lakeland) 31-14 on Aug. 29. Next: Friday vs. Wharton (Tampa).

9. Carmel, Ind. (3-0)

Previous: 9. Results: Nick Logan recovered his own team's fumble and ran it in from 8 yards out, and QB Morgan Newton made a two-point conversion pass to Eric Ardaiolo in a 33-32 defeat of Center Grove (Greenwood) on Friday. Newton had TD runs of 18, 31 and 70 yards as the Greyhounds defeated Lebanon 52-0 on Aug. 29. Newton ran for two fourth-quarter TDs in a 28-21 win vs. Cathedral (Indianapolis) on Aug. 23. Carmel rallied from a 21-7 deficit in the first half. Next: Friday vs. Terre Haute South (Terre Haute).

10. Colerain, Cincinnati (3-0)

Previous: Not ranked. Results: Tyler Williams ran for 240 yards and two TDs, and Trayion Durham had 184 yards and two TDs in a 33-18 defeat of then-No. 23 Highlands (Fort Thomas, Ky.) on Friday. QB Greg Tabar scored a 1-yard TD in overtime as the Cardinals defeated McKeesport, Pa., 14-7 on Aug. 30. Williams scored both TDs in a 13-8 win vs. then-No. 18 St. Xavier (Cincinnati) on Aug. 23. Next: Thursday at Princeton (Cincinnati).

11. Rockhurst, Kansas City, Mo. (2-0)

Previous: 11. Results: Ended a 36-game winning streak for Hutchinson, Kan., 28-21 on Friday as QB Nate Scheelhaase ran for 102 yards and passed for 198. Chris Castelluccio ran for 121 yards and two TDs as Rockhurst defeated Blue Springs South (Blue Springs) 42-14 on Aug. 31. Next: Friday vs. Blue Springs.

12. River Hill, Clarksville, Md. (1-0)

Previous: 12. Result: RB Michael Campanaro had first-half TDs of 18 yards, 13 yards and 1 yard in a 42-7 defeat of Atholton (Columbia) on Friday. Next: Friday vs. Oakland Mills (Columbia).

13. Lowndes, Valdosta, Ga. (2-0)

Previous: 13. Results: Robert Anderson had a 36-yard TD in a 22-7 defeat of Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee) on Friday. Anderson had two first-half TDs as the Vikings beat Woodland (Stockbridge) 63-0 on Aug. 29. Next: Friday vs. Ware County (Waycross).

Previous: 24. Results: Garrett Gilbert threw for 212 yards and a TD and ran for 80 yards and three TDs in a 38-17 defeat of Westlake (Austin) on Friday. Cade McCrary had 203 yards and three TDs receiving in a 27-20 defeat of Westwood (Austin) on Aug. 29. Next: Friday vs. Cedar Park.

Previous: Not ranked. Results: LaRon Kelly had two interceptions as Plano scored 21 unanswered points in a 28-20 defeat of DeSoto 28-20 on Thursday. Defeated Irving MacArthur (Irving) 33-7 on Aug. 29 as Holt Hoetger had two TD catches. Next: Friday at Hebron (Carrollton).

25. St. Xavier, Cincinnati (2-1)

Previous: 18. Result: Drew Grombala caught one TD pass and Vincent Torchia blocked a punt that Andrew Brown recovered for another TD in a 17-3 defeat of Cathedral (Indianapolis) on Friday. Held Prattville, Ala., to 120 yards of total offense in a 15-10 win on Aug. 30. Playing without starting QB Luke Massa (foot), lost opener 13-8 to then-unranked Colerain (Cincinnati).
