Masyga's No-Hitter Highlights Buddies' Win

Matt Masyga 2013

Winona, MN

Matt Masyga needed only 63 pitches to throw a seven inning, complete game, no-hitter on Friday against visiting Rochester Century.

Masyga (2K, 3 BB), used a variety of pitches and a solid defense to shut down Century 8-0.

"Matt did a phenomenal job attacking hitters today," Winona Buddies' Head Coach Matt O'Brien said. "He's got great composure and doesn't try to do too much on the mound. We needed a good outing to get us back on track and he was terrific."

Masyga also received some early breathing room as the Buddies put up five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a bases clearing double from Matt Clark. Clark would have a huge day at the plate going 3-4 with a double and 4 RBI. Jonah Spiten (1-3, 2 RBI) and Spencer Rudnik (1-3, RBI) also contributed to Winona's offensive attack.

Masyga's no-hitter is the second no-hitter the Buddies have had in the last seven years (Jared Gilbertson).

"Hopefully, this will give us a little momentum and confidence heading into the weekend," O'Brien said. "It's still early, but we want to start making strides to playing better baseball."

The Buddies return to action Saturday at home for a double header against Albert Lea at 11 a.m. at Cotter Field.
