CANNON FALLS, Minn. — The Winona VFW Buddies used two early runs to kill any momentum Albert Lea brought into the game and take a 3-1 win Sunday in the VFW District 1 Tournament.

The Buddies (12-14) scored twice in the first inning, using three walks and an RBI single from Sam French to swing the momentum in their favor.

“Albert Lea was swinging the bats really well and we knew we had to get to them early,” Buddies coach Matt O’Brien said “It killed the momentum that they had early in the tournament. It let us play more comfortably.”

Josh Forst helped slow down the hot bats of Albert Lea with five strikeouts in a complete-game win.
