VICTORIA JOKERS win 2003ALCAN CUP
On the Alcan Cup side, the Victoria Jokers prevented an all Prince George sweep, demolishing the host city's Steamer's Pub Devils 14-3 in the final. The Jokers brought a veteran group of players, who had clearly played a championship game or two in the past.Lea Cardiff, the team's goaltender was excellent when called upon, but also benefited from a stingy Joker defense led by captain Brent Menzies. At the other end of the floor,Wayne Christiaens racked up game MVP awards and points ,as his squad racked up a 3-0-1 record en route to hoisting the massive Alcan Cup Trophy.
"Winning the Alcan was our team's goal from the start of the year," Christiaens said. "We got together as a group and decided this was what we want to do, and now we've done it. It feels great. This whole tournament was a wonderful event. Even the teams that lost are glad they came."

Victoria plays a prank on Steamers Devils in Alcan Cup final
The Victoria Jokers were having nothing to do with the concept of home-floor advantage.
The Jokers put on an impressive display Sunday afternoon in Kin 1 to roll to a 14-3 victory over the hometown Steamers Pub Devils in the final game of the Alcan Cup Senior Invitational Lacrosse Championship. Victoria was up 4-2 after the first period and led 7-2 after the second. While the Jokers were filling the net at one end of the floor, they were allowing virtually nothing at the other end.
From there, the Jokers defence dept the Devils to the outside all game long and the Devils didn't help themselves by playing too much as individuals and not enough as a cohesive unit.
"We played a system, we stuck to it and didn't panic," said 40 year-old Jokers veteran Wayne Christiaens, who quaterbacked the Victoria offence and finished the game with three goals and five assists. "Everybody had a role to do. It was 22 guys and a team effort that won this for us.
"We knew they had a few top players and we limited their chances and shut them down."
Christiaens led the Vancoulver Island Senior Lacrosse League in scoring this season with 85 points. On Sunday, he was hel0ped out offensively by Marty Larsen's three goals and one assist and Nigel Tasko's two goals. Singles for the Jokers went to Warren Blackwell, Dean Sutton, Jeeven Dillon, Shawn Preston and Brent Menzies.
The only Steamers shooters to dent the Victoria twine were blake McIntosh, Dave Bennett and Justin Norbraten. Steven Brizan and Brandon Atherton combined to make 40 stops for the Devils while Lea Cardiff blocked 27 for the Jokers.
"I don't think we played badly, they were just better than us." said "Bennett, the Devils captain. "They were really good on defence. It seemed like a little clutching and grabbing but the refs let that go. Their goalie wasn't bad, too. That's probably the least number of goals we've scored."
The game was penalty-filled with 112 minutes called against the Devils and 80 minutes issued to the Jokers.
The Devils were the regular season champions in the PGSLA with a 12-3 record but lost in the first round of the playoffs to Excel Transport/Westwood Sports Pub Bandits. The Devils rolled through round robin play in the eight-team Alcan Cup with a 3-0 record in their pool. The Jokers topped the other pool with a 2-0-1 mark.
