HAWKS GO DOWN FIGHTING IN LONDON
March 1, 2009
With their backs to the wall, the Cambridge Hawks showed up in London Sunday afternoon ready to play some hockey.
The Hawks stepped onto the ice with lots of fight and took the play to the London Gold Knights. A power play maker by Cambridge at 8:27 put them ahead 1-0. Good puck pressure and stellar goaltender held that score up heading to the second.
The Hawks continued to play physical in the second frame and successfully killed off a couple of London power plays. A breakaway goal on the power play gave Cambridge a 2-0 lead and silenced the Medway Arena crowd. The Hawks goaltending continued to be solid and just as it looked like Cambridge had the game in hand, another selfish penatly by the Hawks put London on the power play. A quick London goal with the man advantge cut the Hawks lead to 2-1 and sparked the Knights bench. With momentum on their side, London popped in another tally with 1:09 remaining to knot the game at 2-2.
Cambridge refused to lie down in the third and continued to forecheck hard. Some great chances by the Hawks were thwarted by the Knights netminder but Cambridge continued to battle. With less than five minutes to play it was nail biting time. London went hard to the net and scored with 4:45 remaining to grab their first lead of the game, 3-2. Again the Hawks refused to quit and fought back to tie the game up at 3-3 with 2:57 left to play. Not wanting to make the drive back to Cambridge, the Knights shortend their bench and went for the win. London's coaching tactic seemed to pay-off as the Knights pressed in the Cambridge end and scored twice in the final minutes to open up a 5-3 lead. With the Hawks goaltender pulled, the Cambridge players peppered the London net but just couldn't bury one.
Final score London 5, Cambridge 3...best of luck London Gold Knights as you've earned a well desrved trip to the finals.
Congrats boys on a great effort tonight and a good season. You gave the first place London Knights all that they could handle and made Cambridge proud!
KNIGHTS HANDLE HAWKS IN GAME TWO OF SEMIS
February 28, 2009
In game two of the semi finals, the Cambridge Hawks returned to the Preston Aud to once again tackle the speedy London Gold Knights.
Knowing their backs were to the wall, the Hawks came out flying in the first frame. Despite sustained pressure in the Knights end and lots of good scoring chances, Cambridge was unable to put one past the London netminder. The Knights mustered a few scoring chances of their own but the Hawks goaltender shut the door to keep the score deadlocked at zeros.
A different Hawks team showed up for the second period as London stepped up their skating and passing game. Cambridge again had trouble breaking out of their own end and London's superior puck movement resulted in four goals. A late marker by Cambridge on the power play with 1:31 to play closed the gap to 4-1 and gave the Hawks hope heading into the third.
London opened the scoring less than a minute into the third to throw a wrench into the Hawks comeback plans. A short side marker by the Knights at 7:51 opened up a 6-1 cushion. Cambridge finally got one back late in the frame on a pretty passing play but when the buzzer sounded the Knights were again on top 6-2.
It's do or die time now boys as you head back to London Sunday for game three. One more victory by the Knights and the season is over. London wants a sweep so let's show some Hawks pride and give them a game!
HAWKS DROP GAME ONE TO LONDON
February 24, 2009
In the opening game of the semi finals, the Cambridge Hawks were in tough versus the strong London Gold Knights. Despite the face paint, the Hawks didn't come out aggressive and play like warriors.
London opened up quickly with a breakaway goal 7 seconds into the first period. Failure to get the puck out of the Cambridge zone resulted in another Knights tally with just 1:15 left in the first frame.
A great individual effort put the Hawks back in the game 2-1 at the 7:47 mark of the second. With renewed lfe, Cambridge presssed the London net with several good scoring chances. Another Hawk turnover resulted in London going up 3-1 with 5 minutes to go and then they banged one home on the power play at 13:41 to open up a 4-1 cushion.
The third period was all London as Cambridge continued to cough up the puck in their own end and the Knights cruised to an easy 5-1 victory.
Put that one behind you boys...know you can play better. London is a good team but you can beat them with a strong forecheck and by playing physical, none of which happened Tuesday night.
They are coming back to our barn Saturday for game 2, let's show them how the real Hawks can play!
HAWKS COME BACK TO ELIMINATE WOLVES!
February 21, 2009
A determined Cambridge Hawks team hit the RIM Park ice Saturday night in game five of their first round playoff series versus the Waterloo Wolves. Despite being whacked by the flu bug, the Hawk players refused to quit and showed the Wolves what they are made of.
Cambridge exhibited better energy right from the drop of the puck and forechecked the Wolves hard. The first frame was a tight affair but Waterloo finally broke the bubble with the go ahead goal at 4:49.
The Hawks continued to press the Wolves and were rewarded early in the second with the tying goal at 11:45. Despite several good Cambridge scoring chances, Waterloo popped another one at 4:09 to again go ahead 2-1.
As the Hawk players lined up for the start of the third, they knew that time was running out and it was now or never. Cambridge continued to skate and some great passing resulted in a goal, knotting the game at 2-2. Energized by the tying goal, the Hawks peppered the Waterloo net and were rewarded with two more goals in less than a minute. Desperate to stay alive, the Wolves threw everything they had at the Hawks net but the Cambridge goaltender stepped up and shut the door to preserve the win.
Final score Cambridge 4, Waterloo 2.
Congrats boys on your round one playoff victory. You played as a team tonight and worked hard to earn the win. You need to have that same effort as you face off against the top seeded London Knights in round two. You can do it!
WOLVES DOMINATE HAWKS TO TIE UP SERIES
February 19, 2009
In a pivotal game four on Thursday night at the Preston Aud, the Cambridge Hawks needed a win to eliminate the rival Waterloo Wolves.
Unfortunately for the numerous Hawk fans packing the stands...the game was over before Carm made it to his seat with the popcorn. With their backs to the wall, the Wolves came out much hungrier and out-skated, out-hit, out-passed and out-worked an uninspired Cambridge team.
Final score Waterloo 5, Cambridge 1
It's do or die Saturday night in Waterloo boys...winner moves on to face the London Gold Knights in round two. It's gut check time; you need to look in the mirror, step up and show Waterloo how you can play when you work as one team.
WOLVES TAKE BITE OUT OF HAWKS SERIES LEAD
February 17, 2009
In game three of their first round playoff series, the Cambridge Hawks headed to Waterloo to try and finish off the Wolves.
The first period was a tight affair as both teams were kept off the scoreboard and the frame ended up tied at 0-0.
Waterloo stepped up their play in the second and began to outskate and outwork the Hawks. Cambridge had trouble getting out of their own end as the Wolves pressed hard with a relentless forecheck. Despite the Hawks goaltender making some great saves, Waterloo finally popped one home on the power play at 7:59 to grab a 1-0 lead. With another Hawk player in the box, Waterloo again scored on the power play to go up two goals. Cambridge continued to be shut-out as the Wolves netminder faced very few pucks.
The third period opened with the Hawks scoring early on the power play at 12:18 to get back into the game. The big goal seemed to spark the Hawks as they picked up the pace and created some offensive chances. With a late Wolves penalty and a pulled golatender, Cambridge again tried to pull out a last second miracle but just couldn't buy the tying goal.
Final score Cambridge 1, Waterloo 2
Think the Wolves wanted it a bit more tonight boys...big game on Thursday back at the Preston Aud. Need to work harder on the boards, pass that puck and put more rubber at the Waterloo net!
HAWKS BEAT WOLVES IN BARNBURNER TO OPEN UP 2-0 SERIES LEAD!
February 15, 2009
Despite not showing up until the third period, the Cambridge Hawks snuck out their second playoff win against the Waterloo Wolves Sunday afternoon.
It was a loud crowd at the Preston Aud as the Hawk fans tried to drown out the annoying Waterloo parents. The first period started slow for both teams as there were few good scoring chances at either end of the rink.
Waterloo stepped up the pressure late in the first period and carried that momentum into the second frame. It was all Wolves as they tipped in a power play goal to grab a 1-0 lead at the 13:11 mark. The Hawks were not competing for the puck and failure to move their feet resulted in several Hawk penalties and in another Waterloo goal with 0:26 seconds left. Waterloo limited the Hawks to few offensive chances and the Cambridge goalie kept the Hawks in the game with some timely saves.
Just as it looked like Waterloo was going to even up the series, Cambridge drained a power play goal at 8:02 to cut the Wolves lead to 2-1. Waterloo answered at 7:26 to again re-gain their two goal lead. A missed Hawks penalty shot and an ejection by the mouthy Waterloo coach had the boisterous Aud fans on their feet. The Cambridge players refused to quit and worked hard on the power play to cut the Wolves lead to 3-2 with 5:12 remaining in the third (special thanks goes to the Waterloo coach for the power play). With the clock ticking down on the Cambridge players, the Hawks pulled their goalie and threw on the extra attacker. A late face-off in the Waterloo end with 4 seconds remaining saw the Hawks go to the net in a last ditch effort and they banged it home to tie the game at 3-3 with just 0:01 second left on the clock. The Cambridge bench went wild and the game was headed to OT.
The Hawks continued to pick-up their game in OT and were rewarded with the winning goal with 1:16 remaining.
Final OT score...Cambridge 4, Waterloo 3 and a 2-0 playoff series lead.
You pulled one out of the hat today boys, need that third period effort for the full 40 minutes if you are going to wrap up the series on Tuesday night. Work hard as a team, put more pucks to the net and you can do it!
HAWKS OPEN UP PLAYOFFS WITH WIN!
February 14, 2009
In what is shaping up to be a nasty series, the Cambridge Hawks skated into Waterloo Saturday afternoon and came away with a victory. Despite it being Valentine's Day, no love was lost between these two teams as the match was chippy from the outset and the refs missed calls at both ends of the ice.
The Hawks went up a goal in the first period but Waterloo stormed back to grab a 2-1 lead as both teams played physical and went hard to the net. Before the buzzer sounded to end the second frame, Cambridge drained one to even up the score heading to the third.
The third period started with a nice break-out pass and shot to grab the lead 3-2. The Hawks added another marker for insurance on the power play to open up a much needed two goal cushion. With a couple of Wolves in the box and ten minutes left in the game, things were looking good for Cambridge. Waterloo continued their chippy play and the Hawks got sucked in and retaliated with several selfish penalties late in the period. Luckily, the Cambridge netminder held the fort and preserved the win as the Wolves pressed to tie things up with the Hawk players in the box.
Final score Cambridge 4, Waterloo 2.
Congrats on opening with a win boys, need to play much smarter if you are going to do it again on Sunday.
HAWKS DROP FINAL GAME TO LONDON GOLD KNIGHTS
February 6, 2009
The Cambridge Hawks hit the ice in London Friday night with new lines and a new attitude as they closed out the regular season. Despite the league leading Knights being heavily favoured, the Hawks gave them a good fight for the first 30 minutes.
Cambridge skated hard in the first period and limited the Knights to few scoring chances. A late goal put London up 1-0 heading into the second period.
The Hawks continued to move their feet and work in the second frame, creating several good scoring chances. London stormed the net and was rewarded with another tally to go up 2-0. Some cheap hits by the Knights resulted in lots of power play time for the Hawks and despite sustained ofensive pressure, couldn't solve the hot London netminder. London added another goal late in the period to open up a 3-0 lead.
London buried one early in the third to take the wind out of the Hawk sails and then scored a couple of late power play markers to cruise to a 6-0 victory.
Much better effort in the first and second boys...need to bring that for the full 40 minutes when you face the Waterloo Wolves in round one.
HAWKS NO MATCH FOR LONDON GREEN KNIGHTS
February 5, 2009
In getting tuned-up for their first round playoff match against the Waterloo Wolves, the Cambridge Hawks were looking to set the tone against the physical Knights.
The Hawks hit the ice flying in the first as they charged hard to the net and scored early at the 9:06 mark. London answered mid-way through the second on a dribbler but Cambridge continued to skate and took a 2-1 lead with 8:05 remaining. The Knights again tied the game up on a late goal with 45 seconds left in the period.
After that it was all London as they outskated, outhit and outworked the Hawks en route to a convincing 5-2 victory.
Come on boys…let’s finish the regular season off strong on Friday night against the first place London Gold Knights. Everybody needs to step-up and deliver a better effort or it could be a long night!
HAWKS DROP SILVER STICK FINAL TO ERINDALE
January 18, 2009
The Cambridge Hawks knew they would have to put in a monster effort against the strong Erindale Spitfires if they were going to be crowned Silver Stick Champions.
The Hawks opened quickly and took the play to the Spitfires early in the first. Good pressure by the Hawks kept the Spitfires on their heels and Cambridge scored at the 0:54 second mark to grab a 1-0 lead.
The second period was a different story as Erindale picked up their game and began to outwork the Hawks. The Spitfires finally got on the scoreboard as they popped in a goal followed by two more quick ones to vault to 3-1 lead. The shocked Cambridge players were reeling as the Spits blanketed them with a strong forecheck and kept them pinned in their own end.
It was gut check time for the Hawks as they lined up to start the third period. Unfortunately the gas tank was empty and Erindale continued to out skate the Cambridge players and win those individual battles along the boards. A fourth goal by the Spitfires sealed the deal as they skated away with a 4-1 victory and the title of International Silver Stick Champions.
Congrats boys on making it this far...just fell a bit short in the final game. Wear that Silver Stick Finalist medal proudly, they are very hard to come by.
A special MVP mention goes out to Brad, Carm and Colin who put in back-to-back 12 hour shifts over the tournament weekend. Now that's conditioning!
HAWKS GET REVENGE ON WOLVES IN SEMIS!
January 17, 2009
There was lots on the line in the Newmarket Silver Stick semi-final game as the Cambridge Hawks faced off against the Credit Valley Wolves. The Wolves had eaten the Hawks lunch 3-0 last Friday night in the Clarkson Friendship Tournament and a win would mean sweet revenge and a trip to the finals.
After a team meeting, an inspired Hawks team hit the ice ready to play hockey. Strong skating and lots of heads up passes put Cambridge up 2-0 after the first frame.
The Hawks continued to play physical in the second period and it paid off as they buried a third tally to open up a 3-0 lead. A turnover in the Hawks zone late in the period lifted the Wolves to within two goals heading to the third.
Cambridge opened up the third with a quick marker to regain their three goal cushion. Not wanting to make it easy on the Hawk fans, Cambridge let-up a bit and Credit Valley took advantage as they drained two goals to close the gap to 4-3. The Wolves pulled their goaltender in desperation but the Cambridge defense shut the door and preserved the win.
Congrats guys, you are off to play for the coveted Silver Stick on Sunday morning. Great effort, let's bring that A game as we once again face the undefeated Erindale Spitfires.
HAWKS SHOT DOWN BY SPITFIRES
January 17, 2009
In game three of the Newmarket Silver Stick finals, the Cambridge Hawks proved to be no match for the powerful Erindale Spitfires.
The Spits hit the ice skating and forechecked the Hawks hard right from the outset. The constant pressure by Erindale resuled in several Cambridge turnovers, three of which found the back of the net.
The Hawks offense was kept at bay as the Spits defense held them to few scoring chances. Cambridge stepped up their physical play late in the game but it was too little too late to pull out the win.
Final score Erindale 3, Cambridge 0.
Due to the loss, the Hawks dropped to second in their division, pitting them against the first place Credit Valley Wolves in the semi-finals on Saturday afternon. Time to re-group boys, need to step it up big time if you are going to advance.
Did you just brush me?
HAWKS NAIL NEWMARKET
January 16, 2009
The Hawks went 2-0 in the Newmarket Silver Stick as they beat-up on the hometown Newmarket Redmen.
Cambridge started off strong and vaulted to an early 1-0 lead on the power play at 4:12. Strong defensive play kept the Redmen hemmed in their own end for much of the period.
The Hawks continued to dominate in the second and scored late in the frame just after another power play expired.
The third was all Cambridge and they skated to a 2-0 victory.
Next up Erindale on Saturday am...keep it rolling!
HAWKS SQUEAK BY RANGERS
January 16, 2009
In game 1 of the provincial Silver finals in Newmarket, the Cambridge Hawks pulled one out of the hat against the Oakville Rangers.
The Hawks scored early in the first period to grab a one goal on the surprised Rangers. Despite Oakville carrying the play for the rest of the period, Cambridge held down the fort and the period ended 1-0.
The Rangers stepped up their physical play in the second and finally ripped one home on the power play to tie the game up. Superb Cambridge goaltending kept Oakville off the scoreboard for the remainder of the period despite being peppered with shots.
Cambridge refused to quit and nailed a power play marker late in the third to steal the 2-1 win.
Whew...let's put that one behind us boys and come out flying against the Newmarket Redmen.
HAWKS TAME TORONTO WILD IN FINALS!
January 11, 2009
The Cambridge Hawks continued their good play and overpowered the North Toronto Wild in the gold finals of the Clarkson Friendship Tournament on Sunday evening.
Dressed in their intimidating black uniforms, Cambridge set the tone early with the Wild and scored on a nice slap shot at 5:24 to go up 1-0. The Hawks continued to go hard to the net and banged home a rebound to open up a 2-0 lead with 4:46 remaining in the period.
The second period saw the Hawks continue where they had left off as they dominated North Toronto and kept them trapped in their own end for much of the frame. The Wild forwards tried to generate some offense but the Hawks defense stood strong. A shorthanded goal at 9:17 gave Cambridge a 3-0 cushion heading into the final period.
Cambridge scored their second shorthanded marker of the game 38 seconds into the third frame to widen the lead to 4-0. The Hawks continued to pepper the North Toronto goalie with shots and drained another one to go up 5-0 with 6:54 remaining. Wanting to preserve the shut-out win, Cambridge stepped up their defense late in the period and cruised to an easy gold championship win.
Way to go Hawks, despite a shaky start you improved with each game and came together at end. Work extra hard at practice this week…biggest test of the year awaits this weekend at the Newmarket Silver Stick Finals. Go Hawks Go!
HAWKS TROUNCE REBELS TO ADANCE TO GOLD FINALS
January 11, 2009
The East Valley Rebels from Sudbury proved to be no match for the Cambridge Hawks as they sailed to a 5-0 win in the Clarkson Friendship Tournament.
Cambridge used their speed and superior passing to grab a quick 1-0 lead at the 7:33 mark of the first period. The Hawks saw lots of power play time and pounded the East Valley netminder with shots but couldn’t bury another one.
The boys from Cambridge continued to pour on the pressure in the second and finally drained a power play marker to go up 2-0 late in the frame. The Hawks followed that goal up with another tally less than a minute later to open up a 3-0 lead heading into the third.
The third period was all Cambridge as good puck movement and defensive play made it difficult for the Rebels to muster any offense. The Hawks goaltender shut the door on the few scoring chances that East Valley generated. Two more goals by Cambridge at 9:40 and 3:42 put the nail in the coffin for the Rebels and the Hawks skated away with a 5-0 semi-final victory.
Congrats boys, keep playing that way and you will take home the gold against the upstart North Toronto Wild in the finals!
HAWKS BEAT OAKRIDGE TO ADVANCE TO SEMIS
January 10, 2009
The Cambridge Hawks put in a much better effort as they faced off against the Oakridge Aeros on Saturday night.
The Hawks had good jump to start the game and fired numerous shots at the Oakridge net but were not rewarded as the period ended in a scoreless draw.
Cambridge continued to take the play to Oakridge in the second and were finally rewarded with a goal at the 2:39 mark. The Hawks kept Oakridge hemmed in their own end as they forechecked hard and blasted the Aero netminder with shots. Oakridge did mange a few good chances but the Hawk’s goaltender shut the door.
Cambridge continued to dominate in the third and scored at 4:01 to go up 2-0. The Aeros hopes were finally dashed at the 1:34 mark as Cambridge scored at 1:34 to seal the deal. With time running out, the Aeros trickled a rebound over the line to break Cambridge’s shut-out bid.
Final score Cambridge 3, Oakridge 1.
Good win boys, good luck against the Valley East Rebels in the gold semi-final game Sunday!
HAWKS GET BITTEN BY WOLVES IN MISSISSAUGA
January 9, 2009
The Cambridge Hawks were a little to friendly in the opening game of the Clarkson Friendship Tournament as they faced off against the Credit Valley Wolves.
The Hawks started off slow as the Wolves kept them hemmed into their own end for most of the first period. Credit Valley jumped to an early 1-0 lead and then added another on the power play as they peppered the Cambridge netminder with shots.
The second frame was no better for the Hawks as the Wolves goalie shut the door on all Cambridge chances. A huge 5 on 3 power play for the Hawks was thwarted by Credit Valley as their goaltender continued to be hot. A late power play goal by the Wolves put them up 3-0 heading to the third.
The Hawks continued to play uninspired hockey as Credit Valley worked hard to win most individual battles. Cambridge was unable to generate any offense and the game ended in a 3-0 shutout victory for Credit Valley.
Not the start you had hoped for boys, get to bed and let’s get a better effort on Saturday vs. the Oakridge Aeros.
HAWKS HANG ON FOR WIN AGAINST WATERLOO
January 8, 2009
After a brisk Wednesday night work-out, the Hawks showed up ready to take it to the Waterloo Wolves.
The first period opened with a bang as Cambridge scored 37 seconds in to spring to a 1-0 lead. The Hawks superb puck movement resulted in two more tallies from the point as Cambridge’s defenseman lifted the home team to a 3-0 cushion heading into the second.
The boys from Cambridge continued their great skating and passing in the second and scored at 12:20, 5:21 and 1:39 to open up a commanding 6-0 lead, silencing the annoying Wolves fans. The few offensive chances that Waterloo generated were stopped by the Cambridge goaltender, including a spectacular breakaway save. As the buzzer sounded to end the period it looked like the Hawks were firing on all cylinders and on their way to an easy victory.
The third period was a different story as it seemed Cambridge tried their hardest to give the game away. The Hawks stopped skating and began to take undisciplined penalties resulting in lots of power play time for the hungry Wolves. Despite continued good play between the pipes, Waterloo continued to press and scored four unanswered goals to hush the Aud crowd and cut the lead to 6-4. The Wolves continued to take the play to Cambridge but fell short as the clock ticked down to end the match.
Final score Cambridge 6, Waterloo 4.
Awesome two periods boys, need to bring that effort for all three if you are going to have success this weekend in the Clarkson Friendship tournament. You guys can beat anybody when you play as a team and pass that puck!
HAWKS DROP SEASON SERIES VS. KITCHENER
January 5, 2009
Coming off a long Christmas lay-off, the Cambridge Hawks knew they would have a tight match as they faced off with the rival Kitchener Rangers. The previous three meetings between the two teams solved nothing as all ended in ties.
Cambridge opened up quickly and carried the play for the early part of the first period. The Hawks were rewarded for their skating as they popped one home to grab a 1-0 lead at the 6:58 mark. A late period surge by Kitchener was thwarted by the Cambridge netminder who stood strong.
Teams traded chances in the second period as both went on the power play but no goals were scored. Just as a late penalty by Cambridge expired, a Ranger forward was left open in the slot and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Unfortunately, the Hawks turkey legs showed up for the third period as Kitchener stepped up their game and hemmed Cambridge in. The Rangers were kept of the scoreboard initially by good Hawk goaltending but the sustained pressure eventually wore Cambridge down. The Rangers tallied late in the third to skate to a 2-1 win and take home the season series.
Hard skate on Wednesday boys, need to wear off that Christmas stuffing for Waterloo on Thursday night.
HAWKS WRESTLE G & G CUP FROM HOMETOWN GENERALS!
December 14, 2008
In an overtime thriller in Oshawa Sunday morning, the surging Cambridge Hawks beat the Oshawa Generals to win the Oshawa G & G Tournamnet.
The Generals hit the ice feeling confident as they had only allowed two goals in their first five games and had the large hometown Oshawa crowd on their side.
Cambridge continued to come out of the gate slow as both teams held each another to few offensive chances in the opening frame. The defensive battled continued for most of the period and the frame ended in a scoreless tie.
Oshawa brought the Legend Centre crowd to their feet at the 12:41 mark of the second period as they scored to grab a 1-0 lead. A minute later, a superb breakaway save by the Cambridge netminder kept the Hawks in the game. Cambridge continued to battle and the good pressure finally paid off as the Hawks tied the game up with 10:20 to play. With a Generals player in the box, Cambridge peppered the Oshawa goalie but just couldn't bury the go ahead goal. Just as it looked like the teams were going to head to the third tied, Oshawa surprised Cambridge with a late goal with just 30 seconds remaining.
The intensity picked up in the third with numerous end-to-end rushes and spectacular saves by both teams. The Hawks defense held tight with the forwards skating back hard to help out in their own end. With the clock winding down a great individual effort paid off as the Hawks scored to knot the game at 2-2 with five minutes to play. More good chances by the Hawks were thwarted by the Oshawa goalie and regular time expired with the teams tied.
Just as the players were settling in for an epic overtime battle, a quick shot by Cambridge fooled the Generals goalie 30 seconds in and the bench erupted as the Hawk players poured onto the ice. The Hawk coaches jumped in celebration and then one went down hard; Cambridge's only casualty of the tournament.
Final OT score....Cambridge 3, Oshawa 2.
Awesome weekend boys, you went undefeated in the tournament and came back against a good Generals team. Congrats on winning the Oshawa G & G Cup and making Cambridge proud!
HAWKS TAKE TOROS TO ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP
December 13, 2008
It was do or die time for the Cambridge Hawks and Clarington Toros as they faced off in semi-finals of the Oshawa G & G Tournament.
Again the Hawks started slow and gave up an early goal to Clarington in the first minute of play. Cambridge continued to press and were rewarded on the power play at 4:14 to tie the game up at 1-1.
The Toros opened up the scoring in the second on a breakaway goal and both teams traded power play opportunities for the rest of the frame.
Despite starting the third period down a goal, the Hawks confidence showed as they stepped up their game. A bullet from the point was tipped past the Clarington netminder to tie the game up 2-2 at 11:52. Not to be outdone, the Toros charged hard to the Cambridge net but the Hawk goaltender came up with several big saves. As the five minute mark approached it was nail biting time and the Hawks responded by burying three quick goals and taking the wind out of the Toros sails.
Way to go boys, was tense for a while but you delivered. Get to bed, a Sunday morning championship game versus the hometown Oshawa Generals awaits. Go Hawks Go!
HAWKS SILENCE THUNDER
December 13, 2008
The Cambridge Hawks did battle with the Ted Reeve Thunder from Toronto on Saturday afternoon in Oshawa. A win and they are off to the semi-finals...a loss and it's the 401 back to Cambridge.
The Hawks first period woes continued as they once again got off to a slow start with both teams playing tentative. A point shot finally found the mark at 3:18 to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Thunder tied the game up early in the second on the power play before Cambridge exploded with four goals in 90 seconds to open up a 5-1 cushion heading into the third.
The third period was physical with both teams taking the body and trading goals. When the buzzer sounded the Hawks posted a 7-3 win and a trip to the semi-finals against the undefeated Clarington Toros.
Good win lads...keep it coming!
HAWKS TAME PICKERING PANTHERS
December 12, 2008
The Cambridge Hawks started off slow against the Pickering Panthers but still pulled out the win.
The first period was a sloppy affair with Pickering carrying most of the play. Cambridge finally opened the scoring with a goal at the 2:49 mark.
The second period was back and forth and the teams traded goals to head into the third with Cambridge holding on to a slim 2-1 lead.
The Hawks stepped up the pressure in the third and popped in two more goals to put the game on ice 4-1.
Keep rolling boys, big game against the Ted Reeve Thunder on Saturday morning to determine the divisional winner.
HAWKS CRUSH COBOURG
December 12, 2008
In game one of the Oshawa G & G tournament, the Cambridge Hawks skated past the Cobour Cougars 5-3.
The big boys from Cobourg played physical as they took the body to the Hawks. The game was close until the Hawks stepped up their skating in the third and buried four markers.
A special mention goes to Colin Cook who jinxed the Cougars with prime placement of the Hawks banner.
Good start to the tournamnet boys...good luck in game two against the Panthers from Pickering.
HAWKS BEAT STRATFORD TO SECURE AA BERTH!
December 11, 2008
The pressure was on the Cambridge Hawks Thursday night as they faced off at home against the Stratford Warriors. A win and they make the AA loop, a loss and they are out.
The first period did not start off as planned as Stratford went on the power play right off the bat. Despite some good scoring chances the Hawks defense stood strong with the goaltender making some key early saves. Teams traded scoring chances and Cambridge finally banged one home on the power play with 1:03 remaining.
The second period saw the Hawks dominate the Warriors as a constant stream of Stratford players were marched to the penalty box. The Hawks had trouble capitalizing on their power play time and Stratford drained one with a man advantage to tie the game up 1-1. Cambridge came blazing right back with a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play and goal on the power play at the 1:55 mark.
The Warriors fought hard in the early stages of the third but the Cambridge goaltender made some stellar saves to preserve the 2-1 lead. The teams exchanged power play goals and the fans were on the edge of their seats with a 3-2 Hawks lead with two minutes left to play. Cambridge refused to quit and two late goals secured a solid 5-2 Hawks win.
Congrats boys, you worked hard and the results showed. Get some sleep and bring your A game on Friday as you tackle the Cobourg Cougars and Pickering Panthers in the Oshawa G & G Tournament. Good luck!
HAWKS TIE LONDON IN BARNBURNER!
December 6, 2008
The Cambridge Hawks made the snowy trek to London Saturday determined to do battle with the Gold Knights.
Both teams came out strong with London getting the upper hand early in the match. As the Knights went up 3-1 it was looking bad for the Hawks who continued to skate hard and go to the net. Finally the hard work paid off as Cambridge refused to quit and were rewarded with four goals.
The Hawk’s netminder was solid between the pipes and thwarted several London chances as they tried to tie up the game. A goal by London in the third period deadlocked the teams at 5-5 and the Hawks held on for the tie and much needed point.
Final score Cambridge 5, London 5
Great effort boys, when you work as a team you can play with anybody in the league. Stay tuned…could be a very big game this Thursday night against Stratford.
HAWKS BITTEN BY WOLVES
December 4, 2008
The Cambridge Hawks suffered a major blow in their quest to make the AA loop as a hungry Waterloo Wolves team showed up at the Preston Aud.
The first period started off with a quick pace highlighted by several end to end rushes. The Wolves broke the scoreless draw late in the period as defensive breakdowns by Cambridge in their own end resulted in two quick Waterloo goals.
The teams traded chances in the second period with the Hawks netminder making some good saves to keep the game close. Cambridge couldn’t sustain any offensive threat and numerous giveaways resulted in more Waterloo scoring opportunities.
The third period became nasty as an undisciplined Waterloo team spent most of the frame in the penalty box. Despite unsportsmanlike behavior exhibited by the Waterloo coaches, players and even parents…the Hawks just couldn’t step up and capitalize. Finally, Cambridge potted a power play goal at the 8:27 mark to cut the lead to one. A few more penalties by both teams, a pulled netminder for an extra attacker and a last second flurry by the Hawks wasn’t enough as the buzzer sounded to end what was a poor excuse for a hockey game.
Final score Waterloo 2, Cambridge 1
Backs are against the wall now boys…need to step up large and knock-off the Knights in London on Saturday!
HAWKS SWEEP THE BULLDOGS!
November 29, 2008
It seems the Cambridge Hawks have the Burlington Bulldogs number this season as they beat them for the third time in just over a month.
The Hawks jumped on the Bulldogs early and kept them hemmed in their end for much of the first period. A rebound shot at the 8:09 mark put Cambridge up 1-0.
The Hawk’s strong fore-check and good passing continued in the second period creating plenty of scoring chances but no goals. Despite Cambridge being on the offensive, the Bulldog goalie stood tall and kept Burlington in the game. Finally as the clock wound down to end the second period a Hawk slap shot found the back of the net to open up a 2-0 lead.
Burlington stepped up their game in the third period and the Hawks defense responded. Strong goaltending and good play in the Cambridge zone continued to frustrate the Bulldogs. With a Hawks defender in the box and the Bulldog goalie pulled, Burlington poured on the pressure in the dying minutes but Cambridge held tough to preserve the win.
Final score Cambridge 2, Burlington 0
Nice little roll boys…keep in going this Thursday when the hungry Wolves from Waterloo come to town!
HAWKS SPANK LOWLY HAMILTON REPS
November 27, 2008
After a long layoff, the Cambridge Hawks were eager to hit the Preston Aud ice on Thursday night. The same couldn’t be said for the Reps from Hamilton.
The Hawks started quickly and took the play to Hamilton in the first period. Their aggressive play was rewarded late in the period as they popped in three markers in the final four minutes.
The second period was more of the same with the undisciplined Reps parading to the penalty box for most of the period. Lots of power play time and pressure by the Hawks resulted in two more goals to open up a 5-0 lead heading into the final frame.
The third period became ugly early as one of the Hamilton coaches was ejected from the game and proceeded to throw a temper tantrum in front of a bench full of 11 year old boys. The Rep players soon followed their coach’s lead and stepped up their dirty play and cheap shots. Soon after, three Hamilton players were ejected from the game and joined their role model in the dressing room. When the play finally got underway, the Hawk players did a great job of not retaliating and continued to focus on playing hockey. A couple of nice saves by the Cambridge netminder; a couple more goals and the Hawks put the Reps out of their misery.
Final score Cambridge 7, Hamilton 0
Keep rolling boys…need to keep the pedal to the metal and take it to Burlington on Saturday!
GRITTY HAWKS HANG ON TO TIE KITCHENER
November 15, 2008
Determined to stop their three game skid, the Cambridge Hawks showed up ready to play against the Kitchener Rangers Saturday afternoon.
A lively start to the first period had both teams skating and playing physical. The Hawks strong fore-check created several turnovers in the Ranger’s end. Their hard work paid off with a rebound goal with 2:41 remaining in the period.
The second period was a back and forth affair with numerous scoring opportunities and great saves by both goaltenders. The Hawks hung tough around the net and banged in two markers go up 3-0 with 6:10 left in the frame. The Rangers got one back late in the period as Cambridge had trouble clearing their zone.
The Hawks intensity seemed to wear down as the Rangers pressed hard in the third period. Kitchener cut the lead to 3-2 and then tied it up at the 8:00 minute mark when a Ranger defenseman was left open and snuck in from the point. After a hard fought battle the final score; Cambridge 3, Kitchener 3.
HAWKS DROP 3rd IN A ROW
November 13, 2008
The Cambridge Hawks came out of the gate strong against the St. Thomas Stars but just couldn’t seal the deal. The Hawks hit the ice in the first period with lots of jump as they outskated and outhit the Stars. Despite good pressure for most of the period, St. Thomas capitalized late with a wrap-around goal with 1:22 remaining.
The Hawks continued their good play early in the second period but scoring woes continued as they couldn’t bury one. Just as it looked like they had tied the game, the hometown refs were quick with the whistle and called a Cambridge goal back. That seemed to be the turning point for the Hawks as the momentum shifted to the visiting Stars. Another late goal put St. Thomas up 2-0 heading into the third.
The third period was all St. Thomas as their goaltender shut the door and the Stars pumped in another tally on the power play. To add insult to injury, the Stars buried another shorthanded goal to finish Cambridge off 4-0.
With just 2 goals in the last 3 games, it’s time to step up the offense boys…big game on Saturday against the rival Kitchener Rangers!
HAWKS GET OUTMATCHED BY LONDON GOLD
November 9, 2008
It was a rough weekend for the Cambridge Hawks as they dropped two in a row to move them down in the standings. In what wasn’t Cambridge’s best effort of the year, the Knights jumped on the Hawks early and buried them with four shorthanded markers.
When the buzzer finally sounded to end the game the Hawks were on the losing end of a 7-1 score.
Pop your vitamins and get some sleep boys…think you will be getting a good work-out at Monday’s practice. Need to get back to the basics and play as a team!
STRATFORD HAS THE HAWKS NUMBER
November 8, 2008
In a repeat of the opening Silver Stick match, the Cambridge Hawks were defeated by the Stratford Warriors. Stratford played physical and took the play to the Hawks winning 4-1. The Hawks did an awesome job of staying out of the penalty box but just couldn’t generate the offense that they needed to win.
HAWKS BEAT BURLINGTON
November 6, 2008
In a penalty filled game, the Cambridge Hawks still managed to come out on top against the Burlington Bulldogs.
After an uneventful first period the Hawks scored a shothanded marker in the second period to go up 1-0. Five minutes later that goal was followed up by a penatlty shot bullet to put them up 2-0.
Good goaltending and defensive play limited the Bulldogs to just 1 goal despite having three 5 on 3 power plays. An empty netter late in the third secured the 4-1 Hawk win.
HAWKS WIN SLOPPY IN BRANTFORD
November 3, 2008
It wasn’t pretty Monday night in Brantford, but we’ll take the two points against the Ninety Niners.
After a week’s layoff the Hawks seemed anxious to hit the ice and came out skating. Early pressure paid off as Cambridge drained one at the 8:31 mark on a nice passing play. The Hawks followed that up with another goal on shot from the point with 5 minutes left to play in the period to go up 2-0. Solid defensive play by the Hawks limited Brantford to just one shot on net.
As the second period started the Hawks found themselves in penalty trouble but still scored a shorthanded goal with 6:36 remaining. With another Hawk defender in the box the Ninety Niners capitalized on the power play to cut the lead to 3-1 with 2:28 left in the frame.
Brantford felt the momentum starting to shift in the third period as the Hawks were nailed with several penalties in a row. Undisciplined play by Cambridge combined with vision impaired referees resulted in sustained pressure in the Hawks end for much of the period. Some great saves by the Cambridge netminder kept the Ninety Niners off the scoreboard and a late individual effort by a Hawk forward put the game on ice 4-1.
Come on boys, where were those great passes and hits that we all saw in Woodstock? Need a better effort against Burlington this Thursday night in our home barn…know you will bring it!
HAWKS BEAT OAKVILLE TO WIN WOODSTOCK SILVER STICK!
October 26, 2008
The Cambridge Hawks showed up in Woodstock ready to play against the Oakville Rangers in Sunday night’s Silver Stick Championship.
The first period started out slow as both teams played well defensively and kept the scoring chances to a minimum. The big Ranger players tried to intimidate the Hawks by throwing their weight around but Cambridge responded. Several bone crushing hits by the Hawks showed Oakville that they can play tough too. After a tight ten minute battle, the whistle blew to end a scoreless period.
The physical play continued in the second and it looked like it would remain a draw as well. With the period winding down, a low slap shot from the Hawk defenseman was tipped past the Ranger goaltender to give Cambridge the lead with 1:02 to go. With the fans still on their feet, the Hawks drained another one on a goal mouth scramble at the 0:12 second mark to snag a 2-0 cushion heading into the final frame.
The Hawks continued their good Hustle in the third and good defensive play was backed up by solid goaltending. Not even a broken skate blade could slow Cambridge down as they continued to pound the Oakville forwards. Just to make things interesting a Hawk defender was send to the penalty box with just over two minutes left in the game. The Rangers pulled their goalie to go up two attackers but again the Cambridge netminder shut the door. As the buzzer sounded to end the game the Hawk players mobbed their goaltender and skated away with a 2-0 win and the Silver Stick hardware.
Congrats boys, well done! You seemed to get stronger with each game and showed everyone what you can do when you play as a team. As the Regional Silver Stick winners, you are now off to the Provincial Silver Stick Championships in January in Newmarket. Go Hawks Go!
HAWKS BEAT NORTH LONDON TO ADVANCE TO FINALS!
October 26, 2008
It was a determined Cambridge Hawks team that hit the ice Sunday afternoon to face the North London Nationals in the Silver Stick semi-finals.
The Hawks started strong in the first period and put early pressure on the national netminder. Lots of great passing finally paid off at the 6:48 mark as Cambridge found the net on a beautiful passing play. Just as it looked like the period would end 1-0 for the Hawks, London buried a late goal with 46 seconds left to tie the game.
The second period began with a roar as Cambridge capitalized on a penalty shot to go up 2-1 forty eight seconds into the frame. Again London came back to tie it up on a shorthanded marker with 5:16 remaining in the period. The momentum seemed to shift as London stormed the Cambridge end but the Hawk netminder came up big.
The third period was a different story as the Hawks stepped up their play. A strong fore-check by the Cambridge forwards and more great passing shifted the play back to the Hawks. Finally at 11:59 a breakaway bullet beat the Nationals netminder and the Hawks grabbed the lead for good. Just to be safe, Cambridge added an insurance goal with 7:26 left in the game to put it on ice. Final score Cambridge 4, North London 2.
Awesome game boys…off to the Championship to face the tough Oakville Rangers!
HAWKS BEAT BURLINGTON TO ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS!
October 25, 2008
Game three of the Woodstock Silver Stick tournament was another must win situation for the Cambridge Hawks vs. the Burlington Bulldogs.
The first period was a back and forth affair with both teams playing tentative, not wanting to give up that crucial first goal. With limited scoring chances the period ended in a 0-0 draw.
Cambridge picked up their play in the second period and put good pressure on the Bulldog goalie but the game remained scoreless. As the period wound down the Hawks found themselves in penalty trouble resulting in a five on three for Burlington. The Hawk defenders worked hard and successfully killed off both penalties and the buzzer sounded to end the period still deadlocked at 0-0.
The Hawks came out flying in the third and buried an early power play goal at the 14:24 mark to snag a 1-0 lead. Cambridge kept skating and scored another on a pretty passing play with 8:49 remaining to go up 2-0. With just over three minutes left in the game, the Bulldogs pulled their goaltender to go on the attack. Sustained Burlington pressure and two breakaway chances had the Cambridge fans shaking in their seats but the Hawk netminder came up huge and shut the Bulldogs down.
Final score Cambridge 2, Burlington 0.
Better effort tonight boys, get to bed early as you are off to the semi-finals on Sunday!
HAWKS STAY ALIVE WITH WIN VS. OAKRIDGE
October 25, 2008
It was do or die for the Cambridge Hawks in game two of the Woodstock Silver Stick tournament.
The Hawks came out strong in the first period against the Oakridge Aeros and carried the play early in the frame. Cambridge was rewarded for their hard work as they scored at 3:59 to put them up 1-0. The Hawks continued to out chance the Aeros for the remainder of the period but the Oakridge goalie kept the score close.
The second period was an uneventful one as both teams traded a few scoring chances but no goals were tallied.
Cambridge opened the scoring early in the third as the Hawk forwards jammed the net hard and were rewarded with a goal. Just as it looked like there may be some breathing room, sloppy defensive play in the Hawks end resulted in the Aeros potting a goal at 13:06 to cut the lead to one. Again the Hawks began to fade late in the period but some great saves by the Cambridge netminder preserved the 2-1 Hawks win.
It was ugly but we’ll take it…bring on Burlington in another must win!
SLEEPY HAWKS LOSE IN SHOOTOUT
October 25, 2008
The Cambridge Hawks cannot seem to get a win when heading West down the 401. In an early game one of the Woodstock Silver Stick tournament, the Hawks dropped a close 4-3 decision to the Stratford Warriors.
The first period was tentative as both teams spent most of the frame feeling each other out. Cambridge had trouble clearing the puck out of their zone late in the period and the Warriors capitalized to go up 1-0. The Hawks bounced right back and tied the game up 28 seconds later after a nice rush.
Stratford opened the scoring at 8:29 of the second period on the power play as some tired Hawk penalty killers were unable to clear the puck. At the 7:12 mark Cambridge tied it up once again on a long screen shot.
The pace didn’t pick up in the third and the Warriors drained a long floater that fooled the Cambridge netminder. With 7:37 remaining in the frame the Hawks came back for the third time and tied it up 3-3 on a slap shot from in close.
Despite a few good chances, a five minute overtime didn’t solve anything and the fans rose to their feet in anticipation of a shootout. The Hawk goalie stoned the first two Stratford shooters but the Cambridge snipers were also unable to score. The third Stratford player drained the game winner as the Hawk forward just missed.
Backs to the wall now boys, need two big wins today to get to the semis…you can do it!
HAWKS SQUEAK OUT TIE IN WATERLOO
October 19, 2008
The Cambridge Hawks rolled into Rim Park Sunday afternoon hoping to get a win against the 8th place Waterloo Wolves.
Cambridge opened the scoring early on the power play as both the puck and the Hawk forward ended up in the net at the 8:23 mark. Waterloo answered just 6 seconds later as the Cambridge defenders had trouble clearing the puck. With 1:18 remaining in the period the Wolves scored another to put them up 2-1.
The Hawks again opened up the scoring early in the second as a breakaway slap shot fooled the Waterloo goalie two minutes into the period. Cambridge continued to gain momentum and had several good chances but just couldn’t beat the Wolves netminder.
The third period started off as a back and forth battle with great goaltending at both ends of the rink. Once again the Hawks began to fade late in the period as the Waterloo forwards hemmed them in their own end. With Cambridge unable to clear the puck, a late Waterloo flurry had the home fans on their feet in the dying seconds of the game. A bit of luck and a couple of good saves later, the horn sounded to end the game at a 2-2 draw.
Let’s skate hard at practice this week boys…need to pick it up to be ready for the Silver Stick tournament in Woodstock this weekend!
HAWKS OUTMUSCLED IN ST. THOMAS
October 18, 2008
On Saturday the Hawks once again had a rough ride as they traveled West down the 401 to take on the undefeated Stars.
St. Thomas opened the scoring early in the first with two quick goals just four minutes into the game. Cambridge shifted the momentum back their way late in the period as a breakaway shot resulted in a 2-1 game with three minutes to go. 50 seconds later the Hawks followed that goal up with a nice screened shot to tie the game. The seesaw battle continued as the Stars buried a shorthanded marker with just under a minute remaining in the period. Again Cambridge stormed right back with the tying goal on the power play with just 6 seconds left in the frame. As the buzzer sounded the teams were locked in a 3-3 battle.
St. Thomas came out flying in the second and scored at 13:31 after some sloppy defensive play by Cambridge in front of the Hawk netminder. The Stars stepped up their physical play resulting in more Cambridge turnovers and St. Thomas again capitalized to open up a 5-3 lead heading into the third.
The Hawk fans were optimistic as the third period saw them open up on a five on three power play. Despite having a two man advantage, Cambridge’s offense fizzled and they were unable to generate any sustained pressure on the St. Thomas goaltender. The door closed further for the Hawks as the Stars scored on the power play with 6:05 remaining to give them a 6-3 lead. With the wind out of the Hawk sails, St. Thomas finished off the uninspired visiting team with another tally with 2:09 remaining. Final score St. Thomas 7, Cambridge 3.
Time to re-group boys…need to get back on track against the Waterloo Wolves on Sunday.
HAWKS GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS AGAINST BRANTFORD
October 16, 2008
Another big crowd at the Preston Aud cheered the Hawks on to victory Thursday night.
The first period saw some sloppy play by both teams with few good scoring chances. It looked as though the period would end scoreless but the Ninety-Niners trickled one over the line with 53 seconds remaining.
Cambridge hit the ice with more jump in the second period and tied the game 1-1 at the 11:44 mark on a pretty passing play from behind the net. The floodgates were open and the Hawks pumped in two more goals over the next two minutes to explode to a 3-1 lead with 9:02 left in the period. Brantford closed the gap to one goal with 8:43 left and the period ended 3-2 for the Hawks.
The third period saw Cambridge continue to drive to the Brantford net but the Ninety-Niner goalie stood tall. Finally, with just over a minute left to play in the game, Cambridge buried that much needed fourth goal to give them some breathing room. Brantford pulled their goalie and the Hawks buried a late empty-netter to finish the visiting team off 5-2.
Big game Saturday boys…heading down the highway to St. Thomas to face the undefeated Stars.
HAWKS TIE LONDON KNIGHTS IN THRILLER
October 12, 2008
Thanksgiving turkey didn’t slow down the Cambridge Hawks as they battled their green rivals from London.
The first period was a rough one for the home team as London came out of the gate strong and took the play to the Hawks. Cambridge had trouble getting the puck out of their end and London pummeled the Hawk netminder with shots. Some great goaltending and a couple of crossbars kept things close until London scored with 6:36 remaining in the period.
Cambridge found their legs in the second and a strong fore-check resulted in some great scoring chances by the Hawks. Back to back power plays put more Cambridge pressure on London and just as the last penalized Knight stepped on the ice the Hawks buried one to make it 1-1 with 6:10 to go. The momentum had definitely shifted and 38 seconds later the Hawks ripped another one on a pretty passing play to give them the lead 2-1.
The third period was back and forth with numerous penalties for both teams. With Cambridge down a player in the box, London scored on the power play to even things up 2-2 with 13:09 left in the game. A Hawk breakaway late in the game brought the Aud fans to their feet only to be disappointed as the Hawk forward was hauled down with no call. The refs continued to make their presence felt as they rewarded London with a penalty shot with 19 seconds left in the game. The hush that fell over the crowd turned to cheers as the Cambridge netminder stoned the Knight shooter. A sigh of relief and a final 2-2 draw.
Great game boys, keep up the hard work!
HAWKS SETTLE FOR DRAW AGAINST THE RANGERS
October 9, 2008
Despite a solid effort, the Cambridge Hawks once again ran out of steam in the third period against Kitchener.
The Rangers pressed early in the first but the Hawks rebounded nicely and gained momentum as the period went on. Despite good scoring chances from both sides, the goaltenders kept the score deadlocked at 0-0 heading to the second.
Cambridge continued their hard work in the second and took the play to the Rangers. Numerous penalties by both teams resulted in lots of power play chances by both sides. Some great pressure by the forwards resulted in the first Hawk goal with 13:37 remaining to put Cambridge up 1-0. Despite having a player in the box, the Hawks pinned the Rangers deep in their zone and popped in a shorthanded goal with 9:00 left to go. Good defensive play kept the Rangers off the scoreboard for the rest of the frame.
Cambridge started the third up 2-0 but an early Kitchener power play goal in the first minute put the Rangers back in the game. The momentum started to shift as the period waned on and Kitchener began to wear down the Hawks. Despite some good chances, Cambridge was unable to bury that third goal and found themselves with a one goal lead with two minutes left in the game. The Kitchener coach pulled the goalie and the Rangers poured on the pressure with their net empty. The weary Hawks were unable to clear the puck and the vocal Aud crowd was silenced as Kitchener drained one with just 0:26 seconds left to play.
Final score Hawks 2, Rangers 2.
Good try boys...just need to get that third period figured out and you will be fine!
LONG DRIVE HOME FROM SARNIA FOR THE HAWKS
October 5, 2008
The Cambridge Hawks skated in Clearwater Arena Sunday, ready to once again sting Sarnia. Things looked good early on as the Hawks had their skating legs and put lots of pressure on the Sarnia netminder. Cambridge carried the play for most of the first period but couldn’t capitalize and found themselves down 1-0 heading into the second.
The second period was back and forth with both teams trading scoring chances. A Sarnia penalty resulted in a flurry of activity in the Sting end but the Hawks just couldn’t bury one.
An early goal in the first minute of the third period by Cambridge put the Hawks back in the game 1-1. Solid goaltending by the big Sarnia goalie in the first ten minutes kept the Hawks from getting that much needed go ahead goal. A few long shifts resulted in some tired Hawk legs and Sarnia chipped in a goal to make it 2-1 with 9:04 left to play. Although Cambridge did a great job of staying out of the box for most of the game, a late penalty resulted in a Sarnia power play goal to put the Sting up 3-1. The Hawks pulled their goaltender to try and tie it up but the Sting buried an empty netter with 23 seconds to go. Final score Sarnia 4, Cambridge 1.
You better come to practice ready to work boys, a big challenge against a very good Kitchener team lies ahead.
HAWKS RUN OUT OF GAS IN LONDON
September 28, 2008
Despite being down two players due to injuries, The Cambridge Hawks seemed ready to play Sunday night against London Green. A spirited first period with lots of early chances and good pressure put the Hawks up 1-0 with 9:12 left to go. Both teams traded penalties and the Hawks worked hard to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.
The second period was a different story as the Hawks failed to capitalize on a couple of key scoring chances and once again found themselves in penalty trouble. London took advantage and drove hard to the Cambridge net without reward thanks to some stellar goaltending by the Hawks net minder. When the buzzer blew to end the period the Hawks knew they were lucky to still be leading.
The third period seemed to be all London as they outhit, outskated and outshot the Hawks. Cambridge wore down as the period endured and some sloppy defensive play put London back in the game at a 1-1 tie with 11:24 remaining...so much for the scoreless season! With Cambridge in more penalty trouble, London kept pouring it on and slipped another one past the Hawk goalie with just 4:25 remaining in the game. Defensive zone turnovers added insult to injury as London scored the final goal of the game with 1:31 left to open up the lead to 3-1. If it were not for a great performance by the Cambridge goaltender, the score could have been worse.
Even though it was the parents who should have been tired after a Saturday night shin dig at the Hoppers, it was the boys who looked like they were out late partying. Get some sleep Sunday night boys, have a feeling you will be doing some skating on Monday!
HAWKS STING SARNIA IN HOME OPENER!
September 21, 2008
Sporting their new ties and crisp white shirts, not only did the Hawks look good coming into their home barn…they backed it up with a solid performance in their second game of the season.
The first period saw the Hawks come out of the gate strong and put sustained pressure on the Sarnia goaltender. The puck seemed to be in the Sarnia end for most of the period and the Sting were unable to register a single shot on the Cambridge net. Despite lots of chances and some great passing, Cambridge was unable to bury the puck and the period ended in a scoreless draw.
The second frame was a different story as undisciplined Hawk penalties kept the team shorthanded for most of the period. Solid goaltending and good defensive play shut the Sting down even during a couple of 5 on 3 situations. The Hawks were relieved to be heading to the third still tied at 0-0.
Cambridge once again came out flying and pummeled the Sarnia goalie with shot after shot but just couldn’t buy one. Despite the Sting goalie standing on his head, the Hawks finally got on the scoreboard with 10:48 remaining thanks to a pretty passing play. Cambridge kept the pressure up and followed up the first goal with two more late in the third to put the game on ice. The Sting desperately tried to break the goose egg with a last second flurry but the Cambridge goalie shut the door. Final score Cambridge 3, Sarnia 0.
Congrats to the coaches and boys on a great start…work hard at practice this week, a big early season test this Sunday in London!
A SUNNY START FOR THE HAWKS!
September 20, 2008
Despite the weather feeling more like summer vacation...the Cambridge Hawks were all business in their opener vs. the Hamilton Reps.
The opening period saw some early pressure by the Reps as the Hawks scrambled to find their game legs. The pace remained slow for much of the first period until a power play gave the Hawks a much needed spark. With lots of shots and good pressure, the period still ended 0-0.
Despite starting the second period in the box, the Hawks kept the Reps off the scoreboard thanks to some solid goaltending. A few long shifts resulted in more Hamilton chances but with 9:35 left in the period the Hawks got on the board with a nice tip from the point. Relentless forechecking in a 4-4 situation saw the Hawks get the puck to the front of the net and bang home another goal with 5:19 remaining.
By the third period the Hawks felt the win was within their grasp and stepped up their play. Lots of pressure in the Hamilton end resulted in a 4-0 Hawks lead with just 2:27 remaining. With the goalie pulled and an extra Hamilton attacker on the ice, the Hawks gained possesion and nailed an empty netter to put them up 5-0.
A solid first effort with superb goaltending...way to start the season boys, think it is going to be a good one!
The undefeated season is still alive...bring on Sarnia!
