     •  Cessation of Membership of the North City Knights American Football Club Inc.

Welcome to the official website of the American Football Wellington Inc. (AFW). The AFW is the regional governing body for American Football in Wellington, New Zealand. Our clubs are always looking for players, coaches, supporters, sponsors, and administrators. Contact us if you want to be involved.

    Capital Bowl XIX
    February 23, 2009

The biggest event in the AFW calendar takes place this Saturday, 28 February 2009 when the Protein Cookie Spartans take on the Wellington City Wolves in Capital Bowl XIX.

Winning the Capital Bowl championship game is the ultimate goal of every AFW club and this season we're looking to have a brand new champion.

Both teams are evenly matched in all facets of the game. However the Wolves may have the psychological upper hand with a 2-1 head to head record against the Protein Cookie Spartans during the regular season.

The Wolves are appearing in their third consecutive championship game hoping to capture their first win after two narrow loses both against the Knight City Knights (now the North City Knights). A win will be the first time a city based club has held the Capital Bowl reigns since the Capital City Giants (now the Porirua Giants) won Capital Bowl VI in 1996. Ironically, that year the Giants beat the Porirua Hurricanes, which is one of the two clubs that merged to form the Wolves of today.

The Protein Cookie Spartans of Hutt Valley will be eyeing for their fourth Capital Bowl championship title. The club won two titles while they were known as the Hutt Valley Chargers in the early nineties. Under a new name and identity, the Spartans beat the Knight City Knights in a thriller of a game, 21-19 in four overtime periods, in Capital Bowl XVI.

The game will be played Raroa Park, Broadmedows kicking off at 2:00pm. The game is open to all American Football supporters, so bring your family and friends and come down and watch a great of American Football.

Cessation of Membership of the North City Knights American Football Club Inc.
    February 23, 2009

On 20 February 2009, the North City Knights American Football Club Incorporated (Knights AFC) had their membership with American Football Wellington Incorporated (AFW) ceased pursuant to clause 9.3.1 of the AFW Constitution; breaching Society Rules.

A representatives meeting had been called, featuring the AFW Executive committee members as well as representatives from the other four member clubs of the competition, to deliberate over allegations made against the North City Knights AFC.

    These included:

    Allegation 1 – Misuse of NZAFA funds made available by AFW;

Allegation 2 – Attempting to throw (Intentionally lose) a game, bringing the game into disrepute; and

Allegation 3 – Deliberately misleading the AFW Executive Committee through the fabrication of evidence.

The Knights were afforded an extensive opportunity to offer their defence against these allegations.

It was decided unanimously, by all clubs and AFW executive officers, that the North City Knights were guilty of all charges, including admission of guilt in allegations 1 and 3. These allegations are regarded as serious breaches of the Society Rules (attached), and as such, the representatives
decided that the Knights AFC membership be ceased immediately.

The AFW society objectives identify promoting the game of football as a key priority. The AFW have attempted to work with the Knights AFC throughout the season to enable their club to be a viable society. Unfortunately the North City Knights AFC's hard work was undone due to several choices made by the club leading to the charges alluded to today.

As per the AFW Constitution, the Knights AFC has until Thursday 5 March 2009 to appeal this decision. Following the expiration of this timeframe, the AFW will issue a further full and final statement regarding this event.

The Knights AFC are able to reapply for membership in the 2009-10 season.

    Regards,
