Oswego NIKE Cup Champions
July 24, 2007
Congratulations to our 2007 Oswego NIKE Cup Champions who stood out on and off the field all weekend. Compliments were received from hotel personnel, local coaches, referees, parents, and even a few admiring competitors. The boys stretched and practiced at a local high school Thursday evening before enjoying a relaxing team meal. Friday afternoon, the team defeated the GRFC Thunderbirds from Renton, WA, 5-0. Late Friday evening as stars appeared in the Oregon sky, an unselfish Lightning team shined in a lopsided victory over Pacific Premier FC’s White team. The Lightning earned maximum points and differential Friday by shutting out both Washington squads. Early Saturday morning, the team was tied in the rain by an aggressive Adidas premier soccer team from Eugene, OR, 1-1, but the team smartly woke up in time for a 4-1 victory over a local side from Tualatin Hills. Lightning players then took an informal Saturday afternoon tour of the quant, soccer-crazy campus at the University of Portland. Following Sunday brunch, the team earned its first championship of the year, 2-0 over spirited and undefeated Pacific Premier FC Red. Lightning totals for the championship weekend – 4 wins, 0 losses, 1 tie, 20 GF, 2 GA, 1,355 mi. Next up, the 2007 NIKE Mustang Stampede, August 24-26.
