DODGERS AND BULLS SPLIT
This past weekend saw the Eastern Conference leading Brooklin Dodgers go up against the Western Conference leading Burlington Bulls in a much anticipated matchup.
Game #1
Dodgers sent Wayne Wickens to the mound for the first time in 3 weeks against Mark Nicholson of the Bulls. It was a pitchers duel to the end. The Bulls got off to a quick start putting up 1 run in the top of the 1st inning. The Dodgers then countered with 3 of their own in the bottom of the 1st. The Bulls inched closer in the top of the 2nd with another run, closing the lead to 3-2. That would be all the scoring till the 6th, as the pitchers and defense settled down. Then in the bottom of the 6th with the bases loaded and 2 out, Brad Hanna came through with a clutch hit scoring 2 and putting the Dodgers on top 5-2 going into the last inning. The Bulls put up a late rally with 2 out and saw the tying run come to the plate but that would be it as Wickens closed the door, going the complete game giving up 6H 2BB with 5SO.
Brad Hanna 1-2 BB, 2 RBI
Colin Appleton 1-2, RBI
Wayne Wickens 7IP, 6H, 2BB, 5SO
Final Score – Bulls 2 Dodgers 5
Game #2
This was a battle of the undefeated, as both starters for this game had yet to lose this year. Dodgers went with Sam Grabowski (3-0) as the Bulls countered with Cam McKnight (5-0). Lets’ just say this would have been a pitchers duel if the defense was not so shaky. The Bulls got off to a quick start putting up a run in the 1st inning and another 4 runs in the 3rd inning and jumping out to a 5-0 lead. The Dodgers could not get anything going against Dunn, oh I mean McKnight, until the bottom of 5th as they pushed across 2 runs cutting the lead to 5-2. The Bulls would pull away for good in the top of the 6th plating another 3 and extending their lead to 8-2. The Dodgers would close the gap to 8-5 but that would be as close as they’d get. Both pitchers were outstanding only giving up 2 ER each as the defense combined for 9 unearned runs.
Dan Blea 1-2
Mike Weir 2-3, RBI
Lawrence Thomas 1-1
Mike Elmhurst 1-2
Final Score – Bulls 8 Dodgers 5
This coming weekend the Brooklin Dodgers travel to Mississauga to take on the Forest Glen Giants which has the making of another great matchup as the Dodgers are 9-4-1 and tied for first in the Eastern Conference with the surging Pickering Pirates. Forest Glen Giants come in at 9-2-3 and only 2 points away from the first place Bulls in the Western Conference. Game times are 1pm & 3:30pm at Fleetwood Park in Mississauga.
Dodgers Player of the Week
This past weekend saw the Dodgers go up against the defending OSBA Champion Burlington Bulls. The players knew these would not only be important games in their battle to remain at the top of the Eastern Conference but also very tough games against a strong opponent.
So bringing your "A" game was essential and this weeks winner of the Player of the Week did just that. Congrats to Wayne Wickens for his pitching performance in Game #1. Wayne went a complete game 7 innings, giving up 2 runs, only 1 earned run, on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. It is the type of performance the team has been waiting to see from Wayne this year and he could not have picked a better time to have it.
Honourable mention goes out this week to catcher Brad Hanna who not only had a key 2 RBI hit to solidify the Dodgers win but also shut the Bulls running game down in the 1st game, throwing out 2 runners.
