Sean Bormet named USA Wrestling Freestyle Coach of the Year

By Gary Abbott
USA Wrestling

Sean Bormet of Naperville, Ill. has been named 2008 Freestyle Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling. This is the second time that Bormet has received this prestigious award, also winning the award in 2006.

This award is named after the late wrestling legend Terry McCann, a 1960 Olympic champion wrestler. McCann was a long-time coach with the successful Mayor Daley Youth Foundation club, which won numerous national titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman and produced champion athletes for the United States. McCann also served as USA Wrestling President and a FILA Bureau member.

Bormet was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team coaching staff, working with the athletes and other coaches at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. He served as the personal coach for 2008 Olympian Andy Hrovat, who competed at 84 kg/185 lbs.

Bormet is a coach with the New York Athletic Club, which placed second in Div. I at the 2008 U.S. Nationals and placed numerous athletes on the national team. During the season, he also served as a coach for a U.S. freestyle tour team to Russia.

Bormet owns and operates the Overtime School of Wrestling, a top training facility and wrestling club in Illinois. Since opening this program, Bormet has produced numerous champions and All-American on all of USA Wrestling’s age levels. Also coaching with Overtime is Kerry Bowmans, a 2000 Olympic Trials runner-up in freestyle wrestling, Ed Giese, who was a Freestyle Team USA member for many years, NCAA champions John Kading and Jake Herbert and other respected coaches.

Bormet was a member of the coaching staff for the 2006 U.S. World Team, which placed third in the team standings and featured four individual medalists.

Bormet was named 2004 USA Wrestling Developmental Coach of the Year for his coaching achievements working with age-group wrestlers and programs. He has coached numerous age-group national champions and All-Americans as a coach for the Illinois Junior and Cadet freestyle national teams. He has also coached the Illinois Junior Duals freestyle team.

Prior to founding the Overtime School of Wrestling, Bormet served as an assistant coach at the Univ. of Wisconsin (1994-99) and the Univ. of Michigan (1999-2000).

Bormet placed second at the 1999 U.S. National Championships and third in 1999 as a Senior-level freestyle wrestler. He was third at the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Bormet earned NCAA All-American status twice while competing for the Univ. of Michigan. In 1993, he placed third at the NCAA Tournament and in 1992, he placed second. He was a 1991 Espoir National champion in freestyle and competed in the 1991 Espoir World Championships. Bormet was also a three-time Junior freestyle All-American. He was an Illinois state champion for Providence High School in New Lenox, Ill.
