Local Ball Players Sign with Redhawks
Two Local Players have signed Contracts with the Redhawks. Even if the contracts were only for the weekend.
Derek Dormanen plays for the Midway Snurdbirds and played in Detroit Lakes against the Angels earlier this season.
Tony Richards is from Hope North Dakota and i have known Tony since the fall of 94. Tony took a job as a salesman in this area in May for an Agricultural company. He currently is living in DL with a relative waiting for his house to sell in Plymouth so he and his family can buy a house in Detroit Lakes. Tony has helped out with the Detroit Lakes Legion team this summer and was also to the Angels game against Bluffton.
Article from the FM Redhawks webiste:
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have signed INF Derek Dormanen and C/DH Tony Richards to contracts, the club announced today. Both will be in uniform tonight when the RedHawks open a three-game series against the Joliet JackHammers at Newman Outdoor Field.
Dormanen, 28, previously played for the RedHawks from 2003-2006 after a stellar career at Concordia College in Moorhead. He appeared in 178 games for the RedHawks over four seasons and batted .222 (70-for-316) with eight doubles, one triple, 24 RBIs and 54 runs scored. Dormanen also saw time on the mound for Fargo-Moorhead, going 4-3 with a 4.58 ERA in 38 games. The consummate utility player, Dormanen appeared in games at every position except center field in his four-year career.
Richards, 33, previously suited up for the RedHawks during the 1999 season. He appeared in 14 games and batted .220 (9-for-41) with a triple, four RBIs and four runs scored. Richards was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 18th round of the 1998 draft out of North Dakota State University, but never appeared in a game with the Dodgers organization due to injuries. He has been playing amateur baseball in the Twin Cities for the Minnetonka Millers for the past 11 years.
Article from Sundays Fargo Forum on Saturday nights game:
Tony Richards, who was signed prior to Friday’s game and will likely play just this weekend, got a start at catcher.
“I like how Richards called the game,” Simunic said. “I think he did a real good job catching-wise. Too bad he sells farm equipment for a living and he couldn’t play a little bit more.”
Fergus Game article from DL paper
By: Jason Adkins, DL-Online
The Fergus Falls Hurricanes seems to have the Detroit Lakes Angels’ number for the past few games between the teams.
Fergus Falls, a side that knocked the Angels out of last year’s Class C state tournament and eventually made the semi’s, took another from DL with a 7-5 win Wednesday night at Washington Ballpark.
The Hurricanes took advantage DL’s defensive miscues in the first to get ahead and then scored three insurance runs in the eighth as Angels starter Chris Gilson ran out of gas.
Two errors by DL (10-7) in the first put runners on the corners for the Hurricanes. Pitcher Casey Kowalski helped his own cause with an RBI single that scored Nick Lewis.
Catcher Erik Rohlfs doubled to bring in Alex Conboy and Kowalski to take a 3-0 lead.
Gilson settled down and induced a couple of grounders to end the inning.
DL tried to get one of those runs back in its half of the first inning. Catcher Taylor Fuhs reached first on an error, and then stole second and third.
Fuhs noticed that Rohlfs wasn’t paying much attention to him at third. He tried for home when centerfielder/co-manager Phil Kirchner struck out swinging for the second out.
It was a close play at home, but Rohlfs was quick enough to tag Fuhs on the bang-bang play to end the inning.
“I tried to take a chance,” Fuhs said. “It was close. Oh well.”
Both teams settled down from there with four straight inning of scoreless ball. Gilson allowed just four hits between the second and seventh inning.
Gilson scored the Angels’ first run in the sixth. He reached on an error, which put him at second. Then Gilson stole third and came in to score after a wild pitch by Kowalski.
With two on, the Angels couldn’t get another in after Phil Doll committed the third out after being caught trying to steal second.
Gilson eventually tired in the eighth after he allowed two runners on. Jon Tolbert came in and gave up an RBI single to Kowalski.
“Our defensive miscues did us in,” Gilson said. “But I left some runs on the table.”
Rohls and Jamie Jacklitch added RBI singles to put Fergus Falls up 6-1.
But the Angels rallied in the bottom of the eighth.
Jon Tolbert and Fuhs led off the frame with walks given up by Hurricanes reliever Matt Duenow. Kirchner singled in Tolbert from second with a line drive to right.
Doll singled to right to score Fuhs and Kirchner. Pinch hitter Zach Fullmer’s timing was right with a single to center that scored Doll from second. Fullmer tried to stretch the play when he saw Fergus Falls try to make a play at the plate to try to get Kirchner out.
Rohls, though, made a play to Ben Brimhall, who tagged Fullmer easily.
The Angels managed to close the gap to 6-5 with the rally.
“We couldn’t get enough at the end,” Kirchner said.
Fergus Falls added an insurance run in the ninth. Brimhall reached first after Huberty committed his second error of the game. He scored after on a Kowalski sacrifice fly.
DL brought the tying run to the plate with a man on first in the bottom of the ninth. Fuhs hit a long ball to center, but it was an easy catch to end the game.
“We hung in there and hopefully will put things together down the stretch,” Kirchner said.
Kowalski took the win in going seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. Gilson picked up the loss in seven innings of work, striking out seven.
The Angels played an alumni game, plus an interleague game against the Frazee Flames July 4 at home with results in Wednesday’s Becker County Record.
Angel player Tappe Throws No-Hitter for Frazee legion team
• by Coach Chris Wacker
In the American Legion Post 15 baseball team's most impressive victory of the season, Trevor Tappe dominated Hawley's batters from the mound, allowing no hits in a 5-2 victory Friday night, June 26.
The only Hawley threat came in the 3rd when the lead-off batter was hit by a pitch followed by a walk and two errors by the Frazee defense, scoring two. From then on it was all Tappe.
Offensively, the Black of Frazee scored early again. First inning fire has been a trademark of this speedy Post 15 team. Experienced base running combined with great overall team speed makes the Frazee nine hard to stop when they get rolling. Solid play in the outfield by Andrew Lockrem and Cory Overland was much appreciated by Tappe. Solid defense is crucial in a no-hitter. Special thanks to Overland for helping the team out. Look for great things from him in the future.
Hawley Recap from DL paper
The Detroit Lakes Angels climbed back into first place of the Hi-10 League with a convincing 10-0 win in Hawley Sunday.
With the combination of Wadena-Deer Creek losing and the Angels winning, DL now sits atop of the standings with a 7-2 league record.
The start was fast and furious for the Angels, as Taylor Fuhs started the game with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on the errant throw.
Hot-hitting Chris Gilson followed with a walk, stole second with Fuhs taking home on the throw to put the Angels up 1-0.
Zach Fulmer stroked a two-run home run to give the Angels a 3-0 lead after one inning.
More was added in the second inning, as Kyle Danner, Matt Huberty and Bryan Buhr started the inning with consecutive singles.
Fuhs followed with an RBI to bat in Danner on a fielder’s choice. Gilson was hit by a pitch to reload the bases for Nick Omberg, who singled in both Huberty and Fuhs.
A double by Phil Doll scored Gilson to give the Angels a commanding 7-0 lead.
In the third inning, Danner singled to start the inning.
Huberty railed a double to put runners at second and third, in which Buhr walked to load the bases.
Gilson drove in Danner and Huberty with a single, while Doll doubled to score Buhr for the 10-0 advantage.
Offensively for the Angels, Huberty hit for a perfect 3-3 with a double, Danner was 2-4, Doll 2-4 and Fulmer had a two-run homer in four at bats.
Huberty started on the mound and went the first six innings, giving up five hits and striking out nine.
Justin Berg closed out the game in the seventh.
The Angels next game was Wednesday night at Washington Park against the Fergus Falls Hurricanes.
This will be the first game between the teams since the Hurricanes won a 3-2 game in 11 innings last year in the State tournament.
DL will host Frazee Saturday for the annual July 4 game, for a 7 p.m. start.
Bulldog story in DL paper
June 28, 2009
By: Brian Wierima, DL-Online
It took about seven games for Chris Gilson to start getting used to swinging a wood bat instead of the multi-alloy aluminum ones, but if his 4-4 game Wednesday is any indication, the learning curve is over.
Gilson blasted his first home run of the season for the Detroit Lakes Angels — and his first with a wood bat — to spark a seven-run fifth inning in a 10-0 victory over the visiting Dent Bulldogs.
But his long ball over the left-center fence wasn’t the only extra-base hits he had in his bat, as Gilson finished 4-4 along with two doubles to key a 12-hit Angels’ attack.
“I’ve been getting some more at-bats and using a wood bat is definitely different, but I’m liking them,” said Gilson, who is hitting near the .300 mark.
Gilson’s leadoff homer to start the fifth ignited a rally where the Angels picked up five hits, wrapped around a couple of errors to lead to their game-deciding seven runs.
After the bases were loaded on a pair of singles by third baseman Phil Doll and catcher Doug Dickey — along with an error on a Nick Omberg hit — Max Saarinen earned a tough RBI by being hit hard in the back by a Dent pitch.
Center fielder Kyle Danner proceeded with a fielder’s choice grounder, which brought in Omberg and the second error of the inning on a Matt Huberty hit added DL’s fourth run.
Designated hitter Taylor Fuhs followed up with a clutch RBI single, with Gilson claiming his second RBI of the inning with a one-bagger, but also ended the inning after trying to stretch his single into a double.
In actuality, the Angels needed just one run to win the game with pitcher Bryan Buhr on the mound.
The Angels righty upped his record to 4-0 with an impressive six-inning shutout performance.
His accuracy was right on target with no walks and six strikeouts. Buhr allowed just five scattered hits in the game.
“Anytime you don’t give up walks, it’s key,” said Angels’ co-manager Mark Jorgenson. “We’ll take that every time. Bryan was throwing his fastballs for strikes.”
Jon Tolbert cleaned up the final inning with a scoreless effort to seal the deal.
Each of Doll and Huberty had two hits, with the latter also registering three RBIs.
The Angels (6-2) are tied with Wadena-Deer Creek for the lead in the Hi-10 League and play in Hawley today (Sunday) for a 1 p.m. start.
With the big turnover in the roster from last year, chemistry has not been an issue for the climbing Angels.
“We’ve actually been playing with each other for awhile now (in high school), so it’s not that much different,” said Gilson. Many of his former Laker teammates are now on the Angels’ team. “If we can start producing some more offense and make the routine plays, I think we can be pretty good.”
Co-manager Phil Kirchner, who’s one of the veterans on the squad, said pitching and defense are the keys — and both have been holding up well so far.
“We have a team ERA under 3.00 and we have good starters,” Kirchner said. “Huberty is our ace and one of the better pitchers in the area, while Gilson and Buhr are having good years.
“Justin Berg, our ace last year, is on his way back, too. Jon Tolbert is also eating up some innings for us.”
With veterans Doll and Omberg holding down the right side at first and second base, the infield is becoming strong.
So the question marks which were created at the beginning of the season are slowly, but surely, being answered by this younger-looking Angels’ team.
“There is a good mix of young and veteran players, we should be fine,” Kirchner added.
The Angels will host the Fergus Falls Hurricanes Wednesday, for a 7:30 p.m. start.
