Welcome to the home of Elk Grove Babe Ruth Baseball - Youth Baseball for 13-18 year olds

ALL-STAR SCHEDULE
The 13 Americans opened against Woodland at McAuliffe fields on Wednesday, July 1 and lost 11-1. Next game was a 10-0 win vs East Sac on Saturday. The 13 Nationals opened with a 16-7 win against East Sac on Thursday, July 2. They were edged out by Woodland 7-6 on Saturday. This set up an elimination game between the two Elk Grove teams on Sunday. The teams didn't disappoint with a wild 10-9 game in favor of the Americans. They move on to play Woodland on Tuesday at 5:30, and will have to beat them twice.

The 14 Nationals opened against Woodland at Galt Community Park on Wednesday, July 1 and lost 15-0. They beat Galt 9-6 on Friday to knock Galt out of the tournament. They then played Elk Grove American and won a thriller 11-10 in 11 innings on Saturday. The 14 Americans defeated Galt 18-7 on Thursday, July 2. They played Saturday morning against Woodland and lost 12-2, setting up the above-mentioned match-up with Elk Grove Nationals at 2 pm on the same day. Tough schedule for the Americans, having to play two on Saturday. And if they had won, they would have had to play Woodland on Sunday and beat them twice. That challenge went to Elk Grove National, who were beaten by Woodland on Sunday. However, because Woodland is the host for the State tournament, the EG Nationals will also be in the tournament, which starts July 18th.

The 15's crushed Natomas 35-0 on Thursday, July 2 at the McAuliffe complex. They lost on Saturday to Woodland 6-2, but defeated East Sac on Sunday 12-2 to advance to the championship final. They play Woodland Tuesday at 5:30 pm and will have to beat them twice to advance.

PLAYOFFS!
Playoffs started on Tuesday, June 9. At Jones North, the Bulls defeated the Steve's Pizza River Cats 3-2 in eight innings in a divisional playoff game. In the NL, the Capitol Foursquare Knights beat the Paul Barnes Painting Rockhounds 11-3 at Jones South.

On Thursday, the Bulls won out over the TPC Law Beavers 8-6 at Jones South in the AL championship game. At Jones North, the Knights beat Ted Blake's 356 Restoration Trojans 12-4 to claim the NL Championship.

On Saturday, June 13th at CRC, the BULLS became EGBR champs with a 4-1 victory over the Knights! Congratulations to both teams for fighting through a tough week - three games in five days and all against good teams.

FALL BALL REGISTRATION FORMS
Fall Ball Registration Form Registration forms are now available for EGBR Fall Ball. There will be a 13 year old division and a 14-15 division. The age groups for fall ball go by spring 2010 ages. So if you were a 15 year old in the spring, you would now be a 16 and no longer eligible. If you were a 12 year old in Cal Ripken, you are now a 13 year old.

The season will consist of 12 games and will start with practices in late August and the first games on Saturday, September 12. Probably ten of the games will be part of Saturday doubleheaders, and the other two will either be single weeknight games or single Saturday games. Cost is $90.

In fall ball, teams are allowed to start with as many as six players, and we generally honor requests to play on the same team as a friend.

You can sign up online or go to Handouts to print out a form to mail in or click on the underlined "Fall Ball Registration Form" to bring one up. Due date is August 9th.

If you are interested in coaching, please contact Joe Matlen at 916-747-6252 or Doug Penney at 916-607-3131.

CONGRATS!!
Congratulations to Elk Grove Babe Ruth Alumnus David Hernandez, who was called up to the big leagues on Thursday, May 28th and won his first start for the Baltimore Orioles. David pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed only one run. He had a 2.91 ERA and 60 K's and 13 walks in 43 1/3 innings for AAA Norfolk before his call-up. Hernandez, 24, played in both the 13-15 and 16-18 divisions of Elk Grove Babe Ruth.

HR DERBY AND ALL-STAR GAMES
On Sunday, April 26,2009 Elk Grove Babe Ruth conducted what we believe is a original event, The Tyler Routt "Gamer" All Star games. This event honors the memory of the late Tyler Routt, a player in our league from the time he was 13 years old to age 19. Please see the article under handouts on the left menu of this page for more information about this "Gamer". Tyler was not the best player on the field but he had a quality which his coaches variously described as "heart", "spirit" or just as "a love of the game". Instead of a mid-season all star game with the best players in our 13 to 15 year-old league, the leaders of the league decided to honor Tyler Routt's memory and the Spirit of a "Gamer" with a game between the players in the league who exemplify the "Gamer", "Yes Coach!" attitude. This years event, the fourth annual, did not disappoint. The scores of the games between the Ott and Snider Divisions on the North field and the Kiner and Gehrig on the South field were not important. Both games were well played close contests. It was evident that the league's coaches chose the players well. Each player played to the best of their ability. Good pitching, tight defense and some good offensive innings highlighted both games. Some pictures of the games will be posted here under Routt and Willeford '09 album under photo albums on the left menu. Thank you to our photographers Christie Dunbar and Rick Venegas.

Len Willeford Home Run Derby won by Tyler Blake
April 27, 2009 The 2nd annual Len Willeford Home Run Derby, named in honor of Len Willeford, owner of the Sports Shop and youth Baseball mentor, was won by returning champ Tyler Blake. Tyler dominated the first round with 10 Home Runs then got by the other Finalists, Christian Fonbuena, Tony Adams and Zach Stone with 11 homers in the 6 out final round.

Rusty McLain pitched to all 16 batters in the Derby's first round and then the finals where 30 Homeruns were hit. Behind the plate catching the Derby was Matt McLain. The Sports Shop provided a new Rawlings bat for Tyler Blake as the winner of the derby. The Sports Shop also made the Len Willeford Homerun Derby caps given to the contest participants. League President Joe Matlen, Rusty McLain and Chuck Arthur pitched an hour and a half of batting practice to the hitters in the contest before the derby.

CSD L & L FEE INCREASE
CSD Info Sheet Cosumnes Community Services District, the provider of all the baseball fields we use, have a special mail-in election scheduled to begin May 1 that will deal with proposed increases for park maintenance purposes. Only certain parts of the east side of town will be involved. Elk Grove Babe Ruth does not take political positions, but we do seek to inform our parents and players about issues that will affect our operations. Both Jones fields and Brown Diamond would be affected if this does not pass. The handout above is an one-page informational sheet prepared by the CSD explaining the proposal and offering different ways to obtain more information. We encourage you to be informed about the issue.

THANK YOU !!!
Thank you to OSH for outstanding discounts to our league, great service and going that extra mile. OSH is the sponsor of our 16-18 team the Beavers. Also a great big thank you goes out to Meeks Lumber, Young's True Value Hardware, Costco and Home Depot for making field equipment donations to our league. Their generous support helps to promote 'community' and helps to keep enrollment fees down for the players.

FIELD VOLUNTEER
Elk Grove Babe Ruth is looking for one or more volunteers who can be available during the day to look after the fields. All of the board members work during the day, so the ideal person would be someone who is retired, an old "baseball guy", who wouldn't mind taking a little ownership over the fields to keep them in good shape. Clearing weeds, filling holes, watering down the infield and making recommendations to EGBR and CSD about what things need to be done are some of the tasks we envision. It would be great if this person or persons establish a relationship with the CSD maintenance folks and work with them on sprinkler fixes, watering adjustments, safety hazards, etc.

It would be so valuable to have a pair of eyes at the fields while the rest of us are busy at work. Providing advice and observations about the fields when the weather is questionable would be extremely valuable. We sometimes have to make decisions about cancelling practices or games without really knowing the exact conditions of the fields. This field rep could get litter or some other drying agent during the day to get fields ready for afternoon use, which is something we only do now when we show up at the fields around 4:30 or later. And usually the game or practice is delayed while this work goes on.

We also have to pick up chalk and bring it to the fields, but that is difficult work even for a young guy!!

If you are interested or you know someone who is, please contact Joe Matlen at 747-6252 or joemat3@comcast.net or any other board member.
