The J-Hawk Sports Association is an independent, non-profit youth sports organization located in Urbandale, Iowa. Volunteers in this association operate the J-Hawk Football League (Fall) and the J-Hawk Basketball League (Winter). There is no boundary restriction, both leagues are open to any participant regardless of address or city of residence. Both leagues are recreational in nature and league rules require all players play a minimum of 50% of each game.
J-HAWK FOOTBALL LEAGUE
The J-Hawk Football League is open to all 2nd through 6th grade children. The league is divided into 3 divisions: the 2/3rd grade division which is a pure 6 v. 6 flag league without pads; the 4th grade division which is an 8 v. 8 tackle league; and the 5/6th grade division which is an 11 v.11 tackle league. Players in the 4th and 5/6th grade divisions wear full pads provided by the league.
2/3RD GRADE LEAGUE
Each team in the 2/3rd grade division plays a 9 game schedule which includes 2 playoff games. Every team will play 7 games on Saturday mornings at either 9:00, 10:00 or 11:00 a.m. and 2 games on Tuesday evenings at either 7:00 or 8:00 p.m. under the lights. Saturday games will be held at the Urbandale Middle School fields located at the corner of Townsend Avenue and Park Hill. Tuesday evening games will be held at Frerichs Field (the Urbandale High School football stadium) which has an artificial turf surface. This division is limited to the first 132 registrants.
4TH GRADE LEAGUE
Each team in the 4th grade division plays a 7 game schedule, which includes a playoff game at end of season. All games are held on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Frerichs Field. This division is limited to the first 80 registrants.
5/6TH GRADE LEAGUE
Each team in the 5/6th grade division plays a 7 game schedule which includes 2 playoff games. All games are held from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoons at Frerichs Field. This division is limited to the first 200 registrants.
Registration for the J-Hawk Football League ENDS on August 10th, or at the point maximum numbers are reached in the league, whichever occurs first.
J-HAWK BASKETBALL LEAGUE
The J-Hawk Basketball League is open to all 2nd through 8th grade children. The league is divided into 5 divisions: the 2nd grade; 3rd grade; 4th/5th grade; 6th/7th grade; and 8th grade divisions.
2ND & 3RD GRADE LEAGUE
Participants in the 2nd and 3rd grade divisions are assigned to teams based primarily on neighborhood or school. 2nd graders are separated from 3rd graders in team assignments. Each team in these divisions is given two 1 hour practices followed by 7 practices/games against another team. All practices & games are held at Webster Elementary on Saturdays at one hour increments from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
4/5TH & 6/7TH GRADE LEAGUES
Teams in the 4th/5th and 6th/7th grade divisions play a 9 to 11 game schedule in addition to 1 scheduled practice per week. A season ending inter league double elimination is also held in these divisions culminating in the league All-Star game. The majority of games in the 4th/5th & 6/7th grade divisions are played on Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Urbandale High School North & South Gyms. Players in both divisions are placed on their teams via a draft between the coaches.
8TH GRADE GRADE LEAGUE
The 8th grade division is designed to compliment the 8th grade Middle School boys basketball program. Teams in the 8th grade division play an 8 to 10 game schedule ordinarily with games two times per week at either Webster Elementary, Urbandale Middle School or the Urbandale High School Gyms. The 8th grade division season runs from early November through end of December (with holiday breaks) and ends before the start of the 8th grade Urbandale Middle School boys basketball program on January 2.
Registration for all basketball divisions runs from September 1st through October 12th or at the point maximum numbers are reached in the league, whichever occurs first. The league is limited to 80 registrants in the 2nd grade division; 80 registrants in the 3rd grade division; 120 registrants in the 4th/5th grade division; 100 registrants in the 6th/7th grade division; and 40 registrants in the 8th grade division.
