Kewaskum Closes in on Division Leader With Weekend Wins The A’s picked up two big Rock River wins over the weekend, as they moved within a ½ game of Rubicon for the Northern Division lead. On Saturday they knocked off second place Mayville 8-3 and on Sunday downed division leading Rubicon 14-1. Against Mayville, the A’s used a five run 3rd inning to propel themselves to the victory. With the game still scoreless and two outs in the third, Austin Sarauer ripped a bases loaded groundball directly through the shortstop’s legs allowing all three baserunners to come around to score. Kurt Zagzebski followed with a RBI double off the wall in left allowing Sarauer to score. Zagzebski would later score in the inning on a throw wide of third on a steal attempt putting the A’s up 5-0.
Zagzebski struck again in the fifth as he delivered a RBI single to score Dan Shea who had reached earlier on a single. Mayville cut the lead in half in the 6th as a two-run home run gave the Mallards some life. But the A’s took advantage of another Mayville error in the 7th to score a single run and Jason Strobel delivered a RBI single in the ninth for another run to make it 8-3. Mitch Huffman picked up the win tossing 8+ innings. Kurt Zagzebski led the way going 3x4 (2B, 2 RBI, SB) and Dan Shea chipped in with a 3x5 (SB) day.
On Sunday against Rubicon, the A’s jumped ahead right away in the 1st inning, scoring three runs. A Matt Meisenheimer walk and Jake Spaeth double put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. This brought up Dan Shea who doubled down the right field scoring both runners and giving the A’s an early lead. Shea would eventually score too on a Zagzebski RBI groundout pushing the lead to 3-0. The A’s put four runs on the board in the 4th, pushing their lead to 7-0. Kewaskum took advantage of three walks in the inning and Jake Spaeth delivered a two-out 2 RBI double to cushion the lead.
Kewaskum put the game away for good in the 6th, as they sent ten batters to the plate and exploded for six more runs. Austin Sarauer led off the inning with a bomb of a home run to right, his second home run of the year. Jason Strobel then reached on a one-out single bringing up Adam Martz. Martz fell behind 0-2 in the count, but worked himself on with a 13 pitch at-bat walk. Adam Sarauer followed with a RBI single and Nick Whitty ripped a single of his own to load the bases. Meisenheimer drew the bases loaded walk to score another and Spaeth followed with his third double of the day scoring three more runs.
Jim Ziegler picked up the win on the mound tossing 8 effective innings, while giving up just one unearned run on 7 hits. Jake Lathers pitched a scoreless ninth in relief. Jake Spaeth led the way at the plate going 3x5 (3 2B, 5 RBI) and Jason Strobel stayed hot going 3x5 (RBI). The A’s take on the Horicon Honkers on Wednesday in a Rock River league game before taking a week off for an extended holiday break.

A's Pull Into 3rd Place in Rock Standings With Sunday's Win Kewaskum rebounded with a Rock River league victory on Sunday over the Hartford Hawks 11-1. The win moves the A’s into a third place tie with Oakfield and 1.5 games behind first place Rubicon. The A’s play both teams next weekend in a pivotal Rock River double-up weekend. Hartford jumped ahead to a 1-0 after their turn at bat in the 1st, but Kewaskum would rule the day scoring the final 11 runs.
In the 1st, Matt Meisenheimer led off with a single and scored on a Dan Shea RBI double. Shea would come around to score on Kurt Zagzebski’s single to put the A’s up 2-1 after one complete inning. The A’s tacked on three more runs in the 2nd inning. Mitch Huffman led off with a single and Jake Spaeth followed with a single to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Dan Shea lifted a sac-fly to score a run and Austin Sarauer followed with a RBI double to score another. Red-hot Kurt Zagzebski followed with his second RBI single of the day putting the A’s up 5-1.
In the 4th, Meisenheimer blasted a solo home run to left pushing the lead to 6-1. It was all A’s starter Jim Ziegler would need on this day, as he pitched an efficient 8 innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts in recording his fifth win of the season. The A’s tacked on 5 more runs in the 8th inning as Dan Shea, Austin Sarauer, Jason Strobel and Adam Martz all collected RBI singles.
With the win the A’s improve to 14-7 on the season and 6-2 in the Rock River league. Leading the way at the plate were Jake Spaeth 4x6, Matt Meisenheimer 3x4 (HR, RBI), and Dan Shea (2B, 3 RBI). Strobel and Martz each chipped in with 3x5 days as the A’s pounded out 22 hits in the victory. The A’s next home game will be Sunday (June 28th) as they host first place Rubicon at 1:30pm in a game that could possibly push Kewaskum to the top of the league standings with a win.

Green Bay Pulls Away Late in NBC Tourney Game The A’s traveled to Menasha on Friday night to take on the Green Bay Storm in a NBC single elimination tournament game. In a back-and-forth game, Kewaskum found themselves on the wrong end of the 6-3 game. The A’s jumped ahead 1-0 in the 1st. Shane O’Hagan walked to leadoff the game and scored on errant throw later in the inning. With the scored tied at 1-1 in the 3rd, Mitch Huffman led off with a double to leftcenter. Huffman would score on a James Goodfellow single down the third base line later in the inning putting the A’s up 2-1.
Green Bay went ahead 3-2 in the 6th, but the A’s responded back to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning. Austin Sarauer struck out to leadoff the 6th inning, but reached first when the ball went to the backstop on strike three. Sarauer would score later in the inning on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. In the same inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Adam Martz ripped a line drive to the second basemen that was caught. The second basemen quickly flipped a throw to first base to double off the runner there and end the Kewaskum threat.
The Storm went ahead for good in the 7th putting up three runs off starting and losing pitcher Mitch Huffman. The A’s put two runners on with one out in the bottom half of the final inning, but were unable to push across any runs and were eliminated from the tournament. James Goodfellow led the way at the plate going 3x4 (RBI), while Mitch Huffman chipped in with a 2x2 (2B) game. Matt Meisenheimer also was 2x3 on the night.

Lannon Tops Kewaskum in Nite League Slugfest The A’s dropped their third consecutive Tri-County Night League on Thursday to the Lannon Stonemen 12-8. The A’s raced ahead to a 4-0 lead and clung to an 8-6 lead into the 5th, but Lannon scored the final 6 runs in winning by a final of 12-8. In the 1st, Austin Sarauer collected an RBI single and newcomer James Goodfellow lifted a sac-fly to score another run. The A’s struck again in the second, when Adam Sarauer walked with one and Mitch Huffman singled to put two runners on. Dan Shea then ripped a 2 RBI double to the rightcenter field gap to put the A’s up 4-0.
Lannon answered back over the next three innings scoring 6 runs off Kewaskum starter Nick Whitty. Trailing 6-4 in the 5th, Adam Martz reached on an error with two outs and Adam Sarauer walked to put two runners on. That brought up Matt Meisenheimer who dropped a RBI double to right to cut the lead to one. Huffman followed with an opposite field three-run home run to put the A’s up 8-6. Panzer, on in relief, retired the first batter in the 5th, before giving up a single. Panzer induced the next batter into a groundball back to the mound, but the throw to second base to turn the possible double play sailed wide of the base and the A’s were left with two runners on with still one out. Lannon took advantage of the miscue as they would go on to score four runs in the inning as the A’s aided matters with 3 errors in the inning.
The A’s were unable to mount a comeback and would go on to lose their third Tri-County game in a row. The A’s drop to 5-3 in night league with two games remaining. The A’s record drops to 13-6 on the season. Jake Panzer took the loss in relief, while Mitch Huffman led the way at the plate going 3x5 (HR, 3 RBI).

The A’s advance to the championship game to take on the winner of Brownsville/Menomonee Falls. The date of this championship game has yet to be determined. The A’s shot ahead to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st in this game. In the 1st, Matt Meisenheimer and Mitch Huffman led off the game with back-to-back singles.
