Anyone Can Make it in America
May 7, 2009

The son of undocumented Mexican immigrants, Cejudo recalled living in "the projects, trailers, and even crack houses in four different states," adding, "it sucked, but that's just how life goes sometimes."

He remembers as a youngster living in Arizona, often being in fist fights concocted by "old men," who would give the winner an ice cream cone.

Cejudo said his family's situation was never worse than when it lived in a trailer located on a junkyard in south Phoenix.

"We couldn't go out of the trailer at night because the people running the junkyard would let their guard dogs out. That was the worst it got." Monday night, Cejudo was at Greeley West High School, delivering a motivational speech to a group of wrestlers and parents as the closing stage of the Makin' The Right Moves Wrestling Clinic.

"There's no secret to my success though," he explained. "It's hard work. I've never had it easy. Everybody has a story - make it your own journey.

"You can never know what life brings, so you have to make the most of every minute, every hour," added Cejudo, who later gave some personal advice to Greeley West sophomore and state runner-up Joseph Martinez, stating, "never settle for anything other than first, the gold. Start believing right now that there's nobody better than you."

"It was great to meet him, and learn from him," said 9-year-old Xavier Vasquez, who attends Heiman Elementary School. "I want to be a champion like him."

Vasquez has been wrestling since he was 5, and participated in the two-day camp before being all ears to what Cejudo had to say.

Cejudo's dysfunctional upbringing has been well documented via public appearances ranging from grade-school kids to appearances on The Today Show, Oprah and Jay Leno.

In between, he trains daily whether he's in New York City - as he was Sunday night - or at home in Phoenix, where he spends the majority of his time when not conducting clinics.

When officials at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs accepted him as a resident trainee while he attended Coronado High School, it was the first time Cejudo had his own bed to sleep in.

Cejudo was a four-time state high school champion, winning two titles in Arizona and two in Colorado.

It was four years to the day when Cejudo claimed his gold medal in Beijing, China - defeating Japan's Tomohiro Matsunaga in the 55-kilogram/121-pound final - from when he decided to venture out on his own, accepting a request from Olympiian Patricia Miranda to train her for the 2004 Olympics in Greece.

"My goal was always to be an Olympic champion, and I always look to the big picture of things," said Cejudo, who recalled telling himself 'not to take a back seat to nobody,' when he won his spot on the Olympic team at the Olympic Trials this past summer in Las Vegas, coming from behind to defeat Olympic hopeful Steven Abas.

"I want to wrestle the best, no matter what the situation is," Cejudo said. "I'd go up a weight if it meant wrestling somebody who's supposed to be the best."

Cejudo's immediate plans are to train and compete for the 2009 World Championships in Denmark, then continue his quest for another gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London.

After having his picture taken with Cejudo and receiving an autographed T-shirt, Vasquez flatly stated that he now has a goal.

"I want to be an Olympic champion, like he is," Vasquez said. "This is exciting."

Al Bevilacqua Named Volunteer Chairman of BTS USA Wrestling
March 15, 2009

Beat the Streets-St. Louis To Help 411 Radio at the
NCAA Wrestling Championships

A. J. Walls, Executive Director of the St. Louis Beat the Streets USA Wrestling Program, has been asked by Wrestling 411, part of Media Sports Productions in Minneapolis, MN, to help distribute marketing and promotional materials to the 18,000 fans who are in St. Louis for the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Wrestling 411 Radio is part of the College Wrestling Network, a recently formed alliance of the major wrestling media outlets.

According to A.J., "the kids are excited, the city is excited and we are as a Board, especially happy for the opportunity to be part of such a great championship. This is wrestling's future – kids from the large urban centers of America becoming involved in wrestling."

Participants in Beat the Streets USA Wrestling will benefit in many ways. Improved self-esteem, as well as improved grades and behavior in school will likely be benefits for the athletes involved with a Beat the Streets USA Wrestling program. The biggest benefit, though, will be the sense of achievement and accomplishment with their involvement in an Olympic Sport.

USA Wrestling has named Al Bevilacqua the Volunteer Chairman of Beat the Streets USA Wrestling, as Bevilacqua has an extensive background in wrestling. Bevilacqua, USA Wrestling’s Man of the Year in 2005, has been a key figure in developing the Beat the Streets model program in New York City,.

"With someone like Al (Bevilacqua) working together on this project with USA Wrestling, we are sure that it will be a success," said Mark Scott, Director of State Services for USA Wrestling.

"We hope that this will help wrestling reach kids in our most populated areas," said Scott, "meaning so many more kids will be positively impacted by this great sport. The model has been shown to be highly successful when individuals like Al (Bevilacqua) are committed to the cause, which is why USA Wrestling is so excited to work with him on this venture," concluded Scott.

A driven Bevilacqua will aim to help USA Wrestling reach membership milestones. "Our goal is to have 1,000,000 wrestlers participating by 2016,” said Bevilacqua. "The last frontier for wrestling is the large urban centers, which represent 60% of the population in the USA."

With the proven leadership and capabilities of Al Bevilacqua, there is expected growth in such areas.

Individuals or organizations interested in more information on Beat the Streets USA Wrestling should contact Tony Black at USA Wrestling. He can be reached at 719.598.8181 or tblack@usawrestling.org.

IN MEMORIAM
RUDY M. FIORVANTI
February 13, 1952 - April 13, 2007

Rudy Fiorvanti, a 1970 Massapequa HS alumnus passed away peacefully at his home in East Northport, LI, NY, surrounded by his loving family, his wife Patricia, sons Michael and Patrick, along with his daughters, Annie and Christie. Rudy was stricken with a deadly disease, leukemia, this past year and battled throughout the past months and showed extreme courage before he succumbed, he was 55.

Rudy was a rare three sport athlete, he lettered in football, wrestling and lacrosse in high school. In his senior year, he was the only wrestler to defeat the state champion and finished as a Nassau County Championship finalist. Although Rudy wasn't a state wrestling champion, he was a true champion nonetheless.

He attended Nassau CC, where he was undefeated in wrestling and entered the National Junior Championships, as the second ranked wrestler in the nation. He later attended Hofstra University where he competed in all three sports and was a qualifier at the 1975 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

In his opening bout, he defeated Bob Steele (Wyoming), 6-3. After graduation, he worked as a South Shore lifeguard at Tobay Beach, where he was involved in beach competition teams, including the line pull rescue. He led Tobay to numerous championships against the best squads on Long Island and the Eastern seaboard. Also, at Tobay he captured awards at the Tyler Lynde Memorial Boat Race, with his rowing partner and lifelong friend, Gary Jaeger. He was a lifeguard for the past 37 years.

Rudy also founded Action Fitness, a sports and fitness superstore where he was the president in the family owned business since 1981. Rudy's brother, Ed, is now currently the presiding officer in the company, at the Hauppauge based superstore. Rudy was also the Operations Manager and coordinator for The Mat Slap, a popular wrestling website and annual publication. Rudy is survived by his brothers, Ed, Jack and Thomas, along with his sister, Mary.

The most important part of Rudy's life was his family, which always came first, followed by his close friends. Rudy provided everything for his family and would do anything for his many friends. He was respected, revered and loved by everyone. His legacy is a caring, compassionate and a benevolent person, with a heart of gold. He brought so much to the table, and if you were a friend of Rudy's, it was for a lifetime.

In a book witten by Tom Rath, Vital Friends, The People You Can't Afford To Live Without, the author describes eight vital roles; builder, champion, collaborator, companion, connector, energizer, mind opener and navigator, Rudy possessed all of those characteristics.

We lost a giant of a man, a person that comes along once in a lifetime. Another close friend said, "God will never ask you to carry a stone that is too heavy", but the passing of Rudy Fiorvanti is a huge loss and will be difficult for everyone that knew him. He will be missed tremendously and always be remembered. He will be "Forever in our Hearts". We know that God only takes the best and he took one of the great ones. We will miss you and always love you! May God Bless him and his loving family.

A scholarship fund in Rudy's name has been established. If you would like to donate, please send your contribution to the Tobay Lifeguards, 23 Bonnie Kay Court, Sayville, NY 11782.
