ASTROS WIN 3 IN A ROW IN EAST MEADOW TOURNEY BEFORE LOSING 5-3 IN SEMIS VS. EAST MEADOW!!

The Migs 11U Long Island Astros finished their NJBL Spring 2009 Season with a league record of 5-9. After a strong start, they lost twinbills at the end of their season. With the East Meadow Tournament mixed in, their overall record was a very respectable 8-10.

Throughout the spring, they faced excellent competition and were very competitive in virtually every game. An end of the year team batting slump hurt the Astros towards the end of the spring season.

They will take a few weeks off in the summer as the Williamsport and other commitments take take over before getting back together to train for 75 foot bases.

ASTROS EXCEL IN EAST MEADOW TOURNEY WINNING 3 IN A ROW BEFORE LOSING IN SEMI-FINAL IN HEARTBREAKING FASHION TO EAST MEADOW 5-3!!

Migs LI Astros proved that playing a very competitive NJBL regular season schedule has paid off. They were simply dominant in wins against Ozone Howard and Oceanside Saturday, winning handily 9-3 against Ozone Howard and 8-3 against Oceanside.

Game 1 pitted the Astros against Ozone Howard. Lucas H. went 1 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs and 2 hits. Paul T. went 1 2/3 allowing 3 hits, no runs with 2 K's. Keith M. made his Astros pitching debut impressively with 2 innings allowing only 1 hit and a K. Eric M. finished up with 2 innings, 3 K's allowing one run. The Astros bats attacked all day including Kyle OD 1/3, Keith M. 2/4, Mike S. 3/4 with 2 RBI's and Paul T. 1/3 1 RBI.

Game 2 on Saturday saw another pitching group effort. Lucas H. much more impressive in game two with 2 innings, 1 hit and 3 K's. Eric M. came on allowing 6 hits over 2 innings with 2 earned runs. Paul T. went 1/3 of an innings allowing 1 hit and one earned run, and Mike S. finishing with two outs. The batting barrage included Nick J. 1/3 with 3 RBI's, Dean M. 1/2, Kyle OD 2/3 with an RBI, Mike S. 1/1 with an RBI, and Lucas H. 1/2. The Astros coasted early in this game and this one was never in doubt 9-4.

On Sunday, they took on the hard hitting Ozone Park Dukes in the most dramatics and compelling game the Astros have ever been involved in. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, they gave up 8 runs after two innings to fall behind 8-4. Chipping away the rest of the contest, they pulled to within 8-7 into the seventh inning. However, they faced two outs and no one on base with barely a pulse in the seventh. Lucas H. faced with being last out of the game hit a dribbler between first and second base to get on when no Duke covered the bag. Dean M. smashed a single up the middle with Lucas coming around sliding into third base. On the same play, Dean M. found himself between first and second when the third baseman threw to first and Dean slid back to first knocking the ball away on the slide. This allowed Lucas to scamper home with the tying run. With Astros fans and team in delirium, Kyle OD sent the place into absolute bedlam by depositing a high fastball over the left-center field fence for a two run homer and a 10-8 lead. Kyle had to step through 9 lunatic teammates to step on home plate. In a great touch of class, Ozone Park's shortstop retrieved the ball and Coach Terry presented the ball to Kyle for all of his teammates to sign. In the meantime, Paul T. now faced the task of protecting that lead after coming on in the second inning to provide shutout ball into the seventh inning. After allowing a lead off double, he induced a pop up to Nick J. behind the plate. After his change-up induced the second out via strikeout, he walked a batter on a 3-2 pitch. The spectators were breathless when Paul facing first and second and two outs got the ground ball he needed to Johnny L. who flipped to Mike P. to end the game. This game had it all and the emotion was unbelievable as one dramatic moment after another unfolded. This game was reminiscent of the NY Mets famous "Game 6" in 1986 with two outs and no on base to score three runs and win the game. Great defense all day from Johnny L. at short, Nick J. behind the plate, and a fabulous around the horn DP started by Dean M. to Mike P. to Kyle OD. Paul T. changed the whole game coming on in the second inning to blank Ozone Park through the seventh inning allowing his teammates to crawl back into it and of course Kyle OD's dramatic game winning fence clearing home run.

The line on this epic game was the following:

Mike S. 1 IP 6 H 7 ER 4 K 3 BB
Paul T. 5 2/3 IP 7 H 0 ER 3 K 1 BB
Credit Coach Rob calling every pitch for Paul T. throughout the game.

Dean M. 3/3 1 RBI
Kyle OD 3/4 2 Run game winning homer 2 RBI's
Keith M. 2/4
Nick J. 2 RBI's

The semi-finals Monday morning featured Migs Astros vs the host East Meadow. Mike S. took the hill and went two solid innings only touched up by a two run homer. The Astros fought back in the third inning to place 3 runs including Paul T's RBI single to left, Dean with an RBI hit and John L.'s RBI single as well. This lead was protected by the 3 shutout innings from newcomer Keith M. Great defense included Lucas H. with a bullet throw on the fly from center to Nick J. behind the plate on the receiving end to cut down the tying run, John L. sensational at shortstop all tournament, Dean M. steady at 3B, and Keith M. solid in the outfield. With a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth, Paul T. was brought on. Bad luck struck the Astros as a clearly foul ball down the left field line was inexplicable called fair for a leadoff double. After inducing a fly out to left, Paul T.'s magic ran out as East Meadow placed three additional hits to score 3 runs and go ahead 5-3. The Astros were unable to mount a rally in the seventh to go down 5-3 and were eliminated.

Mike S. 2 IP 4 H 2 ER 1 K 0 BB
Keith M. 3 IP 3 H 0 ER 2 K 3 BB
Paul T. 1 IP 4 H 3 ER 1 K 0 BB

Dean M. 1/3 1 RBI
Paul T. 1/3 1 RBI
John L. 2/4 1 RBI

However, solid contributions from every member of the Astros propelled them to a solid 3-1 showing in a very competitive East Meadow Memorial Weekend Tournament.

ASTROS SPLIT WITH HARD HITTING LI SHARKS

Mother's Day has turned into an Astros Doubleheader tradition now. Our boys presented their mothers' in between games with roses thanking them for enduring 5 hours of baseball. The Astros didn't dissapoint them as they were able to earn a jubilant split against the relentless Long Island Sharks.

Game 1 was a difficult start to the Astros day as they fell behind an incredulous 12-0 after 3 innings. Paul T. did not have his best stuff early as the Sharks pounded him for 5 runs in the first inning. A couple of hard hit balls, a couple of bloops, a couple of cut off mistakes and before the inning was through, the Sharks had taken an early 5-0 lead. Paul zipped through the second inning 1-2-3 but ran into trouble again in the third inning and left before Eric M. took over.

Losing after three innings 12-0 is never an easy thing for 11 year olds to face. However, the Astros coaches were absolutely thrilled at the way the 'Stros responded the rest of the game. Behind Eric M.'s terrific pitching the rest of the way, the Astros clawed back scoring 4 runs in third inning, 3 in the fourth inning, and 2 in the fifth inning but were eventually outlasted 15-9. The spirit of the Astros never died during this game and it served them well for game 2.

Paul T. 2 2/3IP 9H 8ER 1K 0BB L
Eric M. 3IP 5H 3ER 5K 3BB ND
Dean M. 2/3 3RBI's 3 run double
Lucas G. 1/2 2 RBI double
Eric M. 1/3 double 1 1RBI

Game 2 was certainly a back and forth affair. Mike S. took the hill and in perhaps his guttiest effort ever, lasted four innings and kept the Astros in the game. The Sharks are relentless in their hitting attack and were ahead 7-4 after four innings. Mike kept the Astros within distance as he left after 4 innings. The Astros kept storming back in the fifth and sixth innings, constantly putting pressure with timely hitting and outstanding baserunning creating 2 to 3 runs with daring baserunning. Dean M. was a terror all day with 3/4 in the second game with a double and a triple and an RBI. Kyle OD hung tough behind the plate with 2 singles. The stage was set for an exciting comeback with the hitting heroes Kevin O. and Johnny L. Besides tremendous defense with Johnny L. at shortstop all day, his two out 2 RBI single was the catalyst in the comeback fifth inning. That set up the hero of the day Kevin O. Kevin drove a 2 RBI double in the gap in the fifth inning for the game winning RBI's and cap a 3 for 3 day. If that wasn't enough, he wrapped up the win himself hurling 2 innings with 5 K's. His cool demeanor took over K'ing the final batter with the tying run on second after the Sharks had scored a run in the bottom of the sixth already. This was a very satisfying ending to what could have been a disastrous day of baseball.

Migs Astros are about midway through their Spring NJBL schedule and sport a 5-3 record. Migs Astros have played Massapequa four times and all games were decided by one run with the Astros winning three of those games. They also split a doubleheader with the LI Sharks.

2008 SYNOPSIS

MIGS ASTROS FINISHED THEIR ENTIRE 2008 SEASON WITH AN OVERALL RECORD OF 26-15-1. COACHES JOE M., ROB J., JOE L. & TERRY T. ARE EXTREMELY PROUD OF OUR BOYS FOR THEIR EFFORT & ATTITUDE IN THEIR FIRST SEASON TOGETHER.

He picks up the bat,
and walks to the plate,
"gotta hit and that's that.
"The crowd starts to yell,
the game's on the line,
last inning, two outs,
the score's nine to nine.
Dad yells, "Go get it,"
Mom wrings her hands,
coach hollers, "hit it,"
but alone there he stands.
Heros are made
in seconds such as this,
but he's just a little boy,
what if he should miss?
Years after this game's ended
and he's little no more,
will he remember the outcome
or even the score?
No he'll have forgotten
if he was out, hit, or a run,
he'll only look back on
his friends and the fun.
So cheer this boy on,
alone with his fate;
help him remember with fondness
this stand at the plate.
Spend your time wisely
and help in his quest
to be a hitter
with confidence
and always his best.
And when the game's over,
this boy can stand tall,
for you've helped him prepare
to give it his all!
