As a team, we generally try to attend tournaments to help out those in time of need. As a sense of camaraderie, it is import to us that we band together as brothers to help each other out.
This past December, one of our players, Andy Simmons and his wife Heather found out their son Owen (just turned 1 on 12/27/08) was diagnosed with Type II SMA.
Andy, Heather and Adyn (their 4 yr. old son) have traveled to many tournaments with the team in support of charitable causes.
They, along with one of our officers, Greg Demers, have come up with a web site and a blogspot to educate everyone about SMA and to follow Owen's progress.
Soon, NBPD AthleticT-shirts with Owen's Initials will be posted on the website,
www.fight4owen.com to help raise funds to offset the medical costs to the Simmons family. Sgt. Troy Spirlet (another player on our team) and Det. Claudia Sampson (behind the scenes as always for our against Bruins Alumni and O.P.P. Police) came up with the idea for the shirts and so far they area taking off.
Through this web site, we hope that you will take the time to visit Owen's sight and keep him and the Simmons family in your prayers.
We hope to see about getting a hockey game again to raise awareness about SMA.
