NATIONAL BASEBALL TOURNAMENT REPORT
MSBL World Series - Phoenix, AZ - Oct 13 - Nov 1, 2008
The MSBL World Series occurs over three weeks in Phoenix, AZ. The tournament is organized by age divisions with teams formed from all regions of the USA and Latin America. The 18+ and 60+ play in the 1st week. 45+ and 65+ play the second week. The 55+ play the 3rd week.
The Father/Son tournament is the middle of the second week. The age requirement for sons (including daughters) is 16+. Some of the players participate in two or more age divisions to extend the experience and fun from one to two weeks.
Games are played Mon-Thurs on meticulously cared for fields, with the hopes of making it to the playoffs on Fri and the championship game on Sat. Championship gold rings and/or jackets are proudly worn home by those few who were able to combine good pitching, fielding and hitting.
The Roy Hobbs world series in Ft. Myers, FL is organized similarly to the MSBL and is also played over three weeks (Nov 2 - Nov 23). You'll see several teams or individual players that attend both tournaments. The Roy Hobbs and MSBL tournaments are considered the most competitive and respective of all the national tourneys.
There are many other tournaments available for those who want to play in Jan, Feb, Mar and April. Anyone who is interested in playing post-season baseball should contact Darryl Johnson, Joe Viau or Paul Deal for details. Putting a partial or full team together for one of these tourneys would be an exciting event.
LOCALLY-
Paul Deal, Joe & Jeremiah Viau, Mike and Luke Meyer, and Darryl Johnson participated this past fall in post season play.
Paul Deal played for the Chicago Bears 55+ baseball team in Phoenix. He hit .400, stole 3 bases and had 6 walks. The team made the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Playing every day for a week was perfect therapy for this cancer survivor!
Joe Viau put together a team in the 60+ division in Phoenix. (This was the 16th straight year for Team America) After discovering a herbal treatment for his legs, he had two hits in one game at Maryvale Stadium. He managed Team America to a 1-5 record, but the one win was a thing of beauty to remember as Joe scored the winning run. Still having fun at age 66.
Mike Meyer played in the 35+ division in Phoenix, for the Long Island Mariners. He played well in the outfield and was on base numerous times.
Luke Meyer played in the 18+ division in Phoenix for the Denver Twins. His team made it to the playoff quarterfinals.
Mike and Luke played in the Father/Son tournament as well in Phoenix. This was their 3rd year participating in the Father/Son tournament.
Darryl Johnson also played with Joe Viau on Team America in 60+ division. Darryl went 9 for 15 (.600).
Darryl also played for the Chicago Spirit (65+) in the Roy Hobbs tournament in Florida and won a national ring. Darryl hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the championship game. Not bad for being age 63.
For the 2009 MSBL tournament in Phoenix, there is a new division. 70+. That's right! Players 70 and over playing baseball on major league spring training sites. That should be exciting to see.
