2009 Philadelphia A's Game Highlights

Week 5 vs Colt 45s @ Plymouth Meeting

The A's and Colt 45s split the weekends games, and split the season series.  In Game 1, Colt 45s pitcher Chris Vecsey was shutting the A's down once again heading into the 5th with a 6-0 lead.  They pulled Vecsey and the A's managed to score 3 quick runs to cut the lead to 6-3 going into the 7th, but unfortunately the A's could not get key runners in scoring position in during the 6th and 7th innings and lost 6-3.

In Game 2, Colts pitcher Ian Downes was once again shutting the A's out going into the 7th, 5-0.  The A's managed 3 consecutive walks to start the 7th when Adam Oddo ripped a single to score 2 and cut the lead to 5-2.  Billy Mason then came up with 2 down and runners at 2nd and third and ripped a double in the gap to make it 5-4.  Ron Hirsch then ripped a single to left to tie it up at 5! Jim Cherry pitched a wonderful 6th, 7th and got out of a bases loaded jam in the 8th to keep it tied.  Jared Crocker led off the 8th with a base hit, stole second.  Then Sol Raie ripped a base hit up the middle to put runners at 1st and third.  That brought Adam Oddo to the plate,  he looped a base hit past third basemans head to give the A's a miraculous come from behind victory!

This makes the A's record 4-6 and sets up a very big weekend vs the other 4-6 team in the divion, the comets!  This should be a fun weekend.

Week 4 vs Phillies @ Liberty Bell

The Philadelphia A's finally managed to sweep a doubleheader! In game 1, LHP Frank Busillo pitched a complete game! Frank had the Phillies hitters well off balanced the entire game, Frank had 12k's allowed 1 run in the 1st inning, and allowed only 3 hits! Great game Frank! Offensively, Bill Ginley had 2 hits and Billy Mason had a key sac fly late in the game to give the A's a 3-1 win!

In game 2, it was a back and forth battle.  The A's had a 1-0 lead going into the fifth thanks to an Adam Oddo Homerun, then a few errors led to two Phillies runs, to give them the lead.  Chris Schroeder hit a bomb in the 6th inning, which still hasnt landed to tie it up.  It would remained tied until the bottom of the 7th when Waiel Abdullah led off the inning with a bunt single, he stole second on a pitchout! Doug Biernacki hit a solid ball up the middle, so runners were at 1st and 3rd with 0 out when Ron Hirsch came to the plate, he hit a ground ball to short, Waiel beat the throw home to give the A's the SWEEP!  Dennis Geiger pitched 5 strong innings, and Jim Cherry got the win in relief!

This brings the A's record to 3-5 on the season, back in the thick of things, next week we are at Villanova to take on the tough Colt 45s! Next week should be another pitching duel between two good teams!

Milt Thompson's Hitting Tips!

Milt Thompson, the World Champion Phillies hitting coach, is the official hitting coach of the Philadelphia A's in 2009! His hitting techniques were learned by some of the A's this offseason in order to better their offensive production in 2009.  Below are his hitting tips.

1. Have Fun - its just a game!

2. See the ball - Hit the ball!

3. See the ball - Catch the ball!

4. Relax, Step, and Throw.

5. You hit with your hands - not your body!

6. Trust your hands - let the ball get to the front of the plate!

7. Let the game come to you - dont force it.

8. Practice the way you play - game speed.

9. Trust your natural abilty.

10.  Your goal is to have more hits then games played.

A Little Bit of A's History
This organization is entering its 10th season as an Adult/Semi Pro Baseball Club. We have made the playoffs every season and we have appeared in three championships, winning one in 2005! The overall team record is 135 wins, 104 losses, 3 ties.

The overall playoff record is 17-13.

The team has only 4 team MVP's in the last 10 seasons....
  • Billy Mason (5x)
  • Cuba Quintana (3x)
  • Joe Juliano (1x)
  • Dennis Geiger (1x)

As you can see....This has been a very successful organization.
