Piscataway's Benjamin chooses Pace
May 7, 2009

A versatile 6-foot-5 guard, Benjanim was a Home News Tribune All-Area Second Team selection last winter as he led the balanced Chiefs to a 24-5 record by averaging 10 points and seven rebounds per game.
Benjamin was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament after a dominant, four-game performance.
Aside from winning the GMCT last winter, Piscataway won the NJSIAA North II Group IV championship in 2007-08. The Chiefs also captured the last two GMC Red Division titles.

PISCATAWAY CHIEFS (24-6, 15-1 & 1st place Red Division)
Head coach Guy Jensen couldn’t pull off the very tricky back-to-back sectional titles, but all in all, it was another strong season for the Chiefs. They won the division and the county tournament, while coming up one win shy of repeating in North 2 Group IV against Plainfield. Still, they continue to prove their rise to among the Middlesex County elite is no fluke under Jensen, who has shown you can win with football players on the hardcourt.
They made their run through the GMC as the top seed in the county, culminating in a rubber match with St. Joe’s, the only team in the county to beat Piscataway this year. The Chiefs won by seven, their eighth straight win at the time. After a stretch of three losses in four games to Plainfield, Elizabeth and Newark Tech in late January, Piscataway won 14 of 15 games on its way to the sectional final, where it finally ran out of steam in the second half against Plainfield.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 2009
March 10, 2009
On behalf of Coach Jensen and his staff they would like to thank the Class of 2009 for their dedication, hardwork and commitment to the Piscataway Basketball Program the last four years. In the last four years, Piscataway has won 2 Red Division Championships, 2 GMCT Championships and 1 North Jersey Group IV Championship. Piscataway also got back to the 2009 North Jersey Group IV Section II Championship game before losing to Plainfield. This Senior class had back to back 20+ win seasons. They will forever be remembered as one of the greatest classes to step onto the court at Piscataway High School. Good luck to all the seniors at the next level.
Piscataway drops championship to Plainfield
March 9, 2009
ELIZABETH — Winning back-to-back sectional titles is easier said than done.
The Piscataway High School boys basketball team found that out the hard way Monday night.
Pittsburgh-bound guard Isaiah Epps had a game-high 21 points as Plainfield was simply too quick for the defending sectional champion Chiefs, capturing the North 2 Group IV title, 70-52.
The fourth-seeded Cardinals led 21-10 after just a quarter, a lead that never sunk below single digits the rest of the way.
"Plainfield played a flawless game," Piscataway head coach Guy Jensen said. "They did everything they needed to do to keep us on our heels."
Senior guard Jeff Atkins led the seventh-seeded Greater Middlesex Conference champions with 12, but despite a size advantage, the veteran Chiefs (24-6) shot poorly early and never recovered. Senior guard Thomas Bennett had nine, and star forward Tristan Benjamin struggled to find his shot, finishing with just seven in his final career game.
"I told my kids that they have nothing to hang their heads about," Jensen said. "They're the foundation of this program. It's no longer just a one-year wonder. Three years ago with a county title, last year with a sectional title, this year with another county title and another sectional run. I'm extremely proud of these kids."
After trailing 38-23 to start the second half, Bennett scored five quick points to close the gap to 10. But on this night, Plainfield had all the answers, and countered with a 10-0 run that all but put the Chiefs away.
"It's a credit to coach Lubreski and the kids of Plainfield," Jensen said. "Group IV is up for grabs, but people are going to be hard pressed to knock these kids off."
First up will be Paterson Eastside, which handled Union City on Monday night to win Group 1. They'll play the Cardinals (23-6) Wednesday night in a Group IV semifinal.
Sophomore guard Tyrone Johnson added 16 for Plainfield, and forward Jibreel Elliot had 14 while helping the Cardinals hold their own against the bulky Piscataway front line. Epps had 10 of his 21 in the opening quarter, and set up several more scores.
"He ignited our offense, got the ball moving, and we picked up on that," Lubreski said. "We followed that up with some pretty good rebounding down at the other end."
Piscataway wins get to defend sectional title
March 6, 2009
Junior forward Wayne Newsom scored all 16 of his points and grabbed seven of his nine rebounds in the second half when the Piscataway High School boys basketball team rallied for a 57-54 road victory over Columbia in the semifinals of the NJSIAA North 2 Group IV Tournament Friday night.
The seventh-seeded and defending-champion Chiefs (24-5) trailed 31-20 at the break and was held to two points in the second quarter until 1:30 remained.
In the third quarter, Newsom scored nine of his points as Piscataway trimmed sixth-seeded Columbia's lead to 41-39.
With 2:30 left to play in the game, Piscataway took its first lead when Newsom converted a three-point play and the Chiefs never trailed.
Columbia (19-7) made two free throws with 18 seconds left to cut the Chiefs' lead to one point, but Newsom made a layup on the other end, then Piscataway went up by six on two late free throws. Columbia made a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to shape the final score.
Jeff Adkins added 12 points to the balanced winning attack, Aaron Hush and Thomas Bennett scored nine each, while Tristan Benjamin posted eight points and seven rebounds.
The Chiefs, who also received a stellar defensive effort from guard Justin Blake, according to head coach Guy Jensen, will play fourth-seeded Plainfield in the sectional final on Monday at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth at 6 p.m.
Piscataway holds off Colonia
March 4, 2009
COLONIA — After the Colonia High School boys basketball team had fought all the way back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to send the home crowd into an absolute frenzy with 3:00 showing on the clock, Piscataway faced two possible choices.
The defending sectional champion Chiefs could succumb to the pressure of the hostile environment and let the Patriots finish off the job or they could regroup and get back to playing Piscataway basketball.
The seventh-seeded Chiefs (23-5) chose the latter as they held off second-seeded Colonia 62-57 in a wild affair in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA North 2 Group IV Tournament on Wednesday night.
Piscataway will be at sixth-seeded Columbia in the semifinals Friday.
Trailing 60-57, Colonia called a timeout with seven seconds remaining. But the Chiefs' Thomas Bennett never let the home team get off a shot as he swiped the ball near midcourt and went in for the layup as time expired.
"This season, we've been involved in so many close game," said Piscataway coach Guy Jensen, whose team won its 10th straight game. "And we always seem to be in the right place at the right time — on both ends of the floor."
Trailing by 11 points to start the fourth quarter, Colonia began the session with a 14-3 run. Senior forward Nnamdi Usuwa, who finished with 24 points and eight rebounds, led the electrifying surge with eight points by scoring in transition, on drives to the basket and on power moves.
After the two teams traded baskets following the 14-3 rally, the score was tied 52-52 with 3:00 showing.
"Before the game, coach wrote in big letters on the board COMPOSURE," said Piscataway's junior forward Wayne Newsom, who finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. "They made a real big run at us, but I think we were able to keep our composure and make the right decisions."
Colonia committed just four turnovers in the entire second half, but they all came in the final 2:18 as Piscataway really applied the pressure. After missing three straight foul shots, the Chiefs finally hit two as Tristan Benjamin put his team ahead 59-54 with 18 ticks showing.
But, with 10 seconds left, Colonia's Tyler Jackow was fouled on a 3-pointer and he calmly sank all three to make it 59-57. Malcolm Griggs then made the second of two foul shots with nine seconds left for Piscataway. Colonia moved the ball into the frontcourt before calling the last timeout of its season.
"I think the experience of playing in big games the past two seasons says something," said Jensen, whose team was recently crowned Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament champions. "And we have a bunch of football kids who have that winning mentality too. Colonia made a big-time run at us, but our kids were able to keep their composure."
In the opening half, the Chiefs couldn't have played any better in building a 33-21 lead. The Chiefs outrebounded Colonia 20-5, including 9-0 on the offensive end, while shooting 11 of 13 from the foul line, compared to 5 of 9 for Colonia.
In the third quarter, both teams played the majority of it with their best player on the bench with fouls — Benjamin and Usuwa. Colonia's Mike Nweme was able to keep Colonia within striking distance by scoring eight of his 14 points and grabbing four of his seven rebounds.
"Our kids gave it all they had and I'm proud of them for that," said Colonia coach Chris Chiera, whose team was outrebounded 32-20. "We had some good looks early and missed some easy shots and that put us in a hole early. You can't afford to do that against a team as good as Piscataway."

Chiefs team up for win
February 27, 2009
Tristan Benjamin's dominating performance in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament, especially in the championship game, earned him the Most Valuable Player Award, but championships are not won by one or two individual players.
That was so clear to see on Friday night as the top-seeded Piscataway High School boys basketball team posted a 63-56 victory over third-seeded St. Joseph before a crowd of close to 3,000 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
Thomas Bennett carried the offense in the first half as he scored 13 of his 15 points, then handed the baton to Benjamin, who scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half.
But every other Piscataway player who saw time played a part in the wire-to-wire victory, especially bench players Antoine Beverly, Justin Blake, Malcolm Griggs and Jamar Rose.
Beverly, a rugged 6-foot-4 power forward, is usually in the game to provide defense, rebounding and intimidation. On Friday, he made three big baskets in the first quarter which helped his team to a 10-point lead, a lead which was never relinquished.
Blake did not score a single point, but if he wasn't on the floor hounding the Falcons' outstanding floor leader Steve Rennard into a quiet 14-point game, Piscataway may not have won the game. That's how valuable he was.
Griggs saw more time than usual and his defensive presence, leadership and big free throw down the stretch was the reason why.
Starters Jeff Adkins and Wayne Newsom were also instrumental.
Adkins, the Chiefs' underrated guard, hit a big three-pointer in the opening half, then scored eight points in the second half in addition to running the team along with Bennett. Newsom, meanwhile, the team's vocal leader, had four big rebounds in the fourth quarter, a big blocked shot and two free throws with 2:11 left which gave his team a 12-point lead to seal the game.
"We knew it was going to take a team effort to beat a great team and so well coached as St. Joseph," Piscataway head coach Guy Jensen said. "Tristan took over for us down the stretch, but every kid who was on the floor made at least one or two key plays during the course of the game which helped us win the game."
NOTES: Piscataway outrebounded St. Joseph 23-18. . . . St. Joseph turned the ball over 19 times — five in the first, second and fourth quarters. Piscataway turned the ball over 14 times. . . . St. Joseph shot 46 percent from the field on 21 of 45. The Falcons were 3 of 12 from 3-point range and 11 of 17 from the foul line. Piscataway shot 62 percent on 23 of 37 from the field. The Chiefs were 2 of 5 from 3-point range and 15 of 31 from the foul line. . . . In five years as head coach, Guy Jensen is 79-50 at Piscataway with two GMCT crowns and one sectional title. . . . Piscataway is now 7-2 in Middlesex County/GMC Tournament championship games.

GMC Boys Basketball Tournament Semifinal - Piscataway goes into zone to reach final
February 26, 2009 - 08:00 PM
SOUTH BRUNSWICK — There's an old adage in sports which says defense wins championships. But a zone defense?
With the Monroe High School boys basketball team in control of the action in the late stages of the third quarter in the semifinals of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament on Wednesday night, Piscataway coach Guy Jensen called a timeout and turned around the game around.
How?
By switching from a man-to-man defense to an active 2-3 zone.
RELATED
Piscataway vs. Monroe
As a result, the top-seeded Chiefs (20-5) are heading to the GMCT championship after posting a 63-51 win over fifth-seeded Monroe (20-6) at South Brunswick High School. Piscataway will take on third-seeded St. Joseph in the title game at 8 p.m. Friday at Rutgers University.
The Chiefs turned in a balanced attack as senior wing Tristan Benjamin finished with 20 points, while junior forward Wayne Newsom posted 14 points and seven rebounds, including 10 and five in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line. Thomas Bennett added 13 points for Piscataway, while Stephen Blish scored 24 points and Tim Brix 14 for Monroe.
"The coach has us ready for every situation," Benjamin said. "We went to our zone, and we took away their momentum. That was the key to the game."
In the opening half, Piscataway came out and appeared to intimidate the Falcons with their advantage in height and athleticism, bolting to a 10-2 lead.
But Blish's tenacious play bolstered the Falcons, as they not only took the lead with 5:35 left in the second quarter, but that lead grew as high as eight points. Monroe eventually settled for a 33-27 halftime lead.
Monroe outrebounded the taller Chiefs 13-11 in the first half and shot 50 percent from the floor overall and from 3-point range (4 for 8).
"At halftime, the kids knew they played bad," Jensen said. "So we just talked about playing our game, rebounding and playing defense."
In the third quarter, when Jeff Adkins nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game for Piscataway at 39-39 with 2:58 remaining, the Chiefs went into their zone. The long-armed and quick-footed Chiefs held Monroe to 12 points the rest of the way, limiting the Falcons to 2-of-10 shooting from 3-point range and not leaving an inch of space open for penetration.
"We went to the zone for a number of reasons," Jensen said. "We wanted to stay out of foul trouble because we had so many reach-in fouls on their penetration, we wanted to slow them down because pushing the ball is their strength, and we didn't think they had the shooters to hurt us consistently."
RELATED
Piscataway vs. Monroe
When Blish nailed a 3-pointer to end the third quarter, Monroe actually led 42-41. But the Chiefs scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter and held Monroe without a point until 4:27 remained.
With 3:23 left, Monroe cut the lead to 49-46 on a layup by Brian Rudowitz, but the Chiefs proceeded to go on a 10-3 run capped by a Newsom dunk.
Piscataway outrebounded Monroe 17-6 and turned over the ball just once in the second half after eight turnovers in the first half. Monroe turned over the ball 16 times total.
"Monroe is a very good team," Benjamin said. "In the first half, they played very well and we didn't. There was never any doubt in us because we feel that our good is better than their good and as long as we played defense and executed on offense, we would be all right."
NOTES: In the second half, Piscataway had committed six fouls to Monroe's none and the Falcons were already in the bonus with 3:50 left in the third quarter. But the foul discrepancy sooned changed as Monroe's total went to 10, while Piscataway had eight. Piscataway wound up shooting 18 of 31 from the line, while Monroe was 13 of 21.

Taller Chiefs take division lead by a head
January 15, 2009
PISCATAWAY —The Piscataway High School boys basketball team let one big lead get away, but the Chiefs were determined not to let the next one go astray in a battle of the top teams in the Home News Tribune's Top 10.
By taking advantage of their distinct height advantage and by playing relentless man-to-man defense, No. 2 Piscataway upended No. 1 and previously-unbeaten St. Joseph 55-41 to take over first place in the Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division.
The Chiefs (7-1), who had three players of 6-foot-4 or taller on the floor at all times, turned in a balanced attack with 6-5 senior Tristan Benjamin leading the way with 13 points and eight rebounds. Wayne Newsom, a 6-6 junior, added 11 points. Junior point guard Steve Rennard (22) scored more than half of the points for St. Joseph.
With St. Joseph entering the game giving up just 38.1 points per game and Piscataway 38.2, this was expected to be a defensive struggle. It turned out to to be, but it came after Piscataway claimed an 17-11 first quarter lead after jumping ahead 11-1.
But the Falcons settled down. They ran their offensive sets and wound up going into a 2-3 zone when their two big men — Robbie Ashamole and Gerard Lewis — went to the bench for two fouls each. St. Joseph (9-1) even took a brief lead, 24-23 with 1:26 left in the half, on a fastbreak layup by Rennard.
The only problem was the Falcons never scored another point until 3:38 remained in the third quarter. That cut Piscataway's lead to 37-26 as the Chiefs had built a 14-point lead.
The Chiefs, who outrebounded St. Joseph 27-19 and continually pounded the offensive glass, turned the Falcons over 23 times, including seven in the third quarter to building its big lead.
"Defense is the key for us," Benjamin said. "Our offense will come, but we know if we focus on defense like we did tonight, we're tough to beat."
The Falcons crept to within eight points at 49-41 with 3:34 remaining in the game. But after missing two foul shots, the Chiefs made two foul shots — one by Newsom, one by Benjamin — then Benjamin sealed it with a steal, followed by a two-handed slam.
"All week we were working on some different things we wanted to do defensively," Piscataway coach Guy Jensen said. "But when push comes to shove, we have a bunch of kids who can play man-to-man defense. Our size makes us tough, no doubt, but I thought the defense was the key."
As for giving up a double-digit lead early on, Jensen said his team was not fazed.
"I thought we played well in the first half," Jensen said. "You knew St. Joe's was going to make a run, but I thought our kids showed their composure. They're senior heavy, so they kept on battling."
A year ago, Piscataway was the favorite to win the GMC Tournament, but St. Joseph ruined those plans by knocking off the Chiefs in the semifinals. That game was still on their minds, according to Benjamin.
"Oh yes, we were thinking about that," Benjamin said. "We definitely wanted revenge."
