Radnor Bows out in the QuarterFinals of AAA-District-1 Championship Loses 0-3 to #1-seed Lower Merion
As for all (but one) of the teams who qualify for play-offs, the season for the Radnor Raiders ended in a loss. In a game played in driving rain and gusty winds, Radnor was up against a Lower Merion team that is currently ranked 8th in the nation - just ahead of 10th ranked Downingtwon West. Indeed, the Aces needed less than a minute to score their first goal on a textbook cross and header, and were up 3-0 at half-time. The Raiders never gave up, showed a lot of heart and could claim to have played the Aces even in the second half. Some of the fans wished the teams would have switched to playing American football. For one, because Lower Merion is lousy at football, and two, because Max Camp would have tied the game on a 35-yard boot that went through the uprights late in the game. :)
This observer wants to thank the team for the tremendous heart that they showed, especially in the most challenging games and circumstances, the coaches for their dedication, patience and wisdom, and all the fans and parents for showing up so faithfully and cheering on the team, win or lose. Best wishes to the seniors, and good luck to the team for next year.

Radnor wins again and advances to the quarter finals of the District 1-AAA-championship! #1 Lower Merion is next.
In a well-played and hard-fought game Radnor prevailed against the Hatters from Hatboro/Horsham 1-0 on a sudden death goal by Rob Sitoski 6 minutes into the first overtime period. Special mention should go to outside defenders Jerome Vivino and Andrew Miller, who were outstanding shutting down some of the speediest wings Radnor has faced all season.
Freshmen News
Radnor's freshmen team also ended the season on a high note, beating arch-rival Lower Merion 4-0. Quite a feat! Dean DerSimonian had a hat trick. Congrats!
What a game! Radnor scores a huge upset in the first round of District 1- AAA play-off action. Being seeded #24, playing at #9-seed Pennridge - a high school twice as large as Radnor-, the Raiders showed no fear, and won a PK shootout with 5-4, after regulation and overtime ended at 3-3.
[For a professional write-up from Pennridge's point of view, see here ]
In a tremendously exciting game, Radnor got on the board first only 5 minutes into the game, when Max Camp's free-kick glanced off a Pennridge defender's head and ended in the far corner of their own goal. Only minutes later Radnor could have extended its lead, but Peter Volpert's point-blank turn-around shot was brilliantly saved by the Rams' goalie, Alex Saint-Pol. While Radnor had more of the game in the first half with more shots on goal and more corners, the Rams stayed dangerous around their athletic senior captain. The narrow size of the field and unevenness of the ground, (the field being principally used as a football field), every throw-in and cross into the box created great difficulties for the defenses on both sides, as balls bounced unexpectedly, and even the usually most assured players started to shank balls. Indeed, practically all the subsequent goals occurred after defenses were unable to clear the ball. First Pennridge scored at after an impressive run down the entire length of the field by their right full-back. Then the Rams went ahead late in the first half after confusion reigned in the Radnor box. The teams changed sides with the Rams leading 2-1.
25 minutes into the second half, Matt Cherry tied the game out of a scramble in front of Pennridge's goal. But the Rams came right back and scored off a throw-in with 10 minutes left in the game. Ryan Devine seemed to have the ball saved, but the referee decided that he was behind his line and called it a goal. The Raiders continued to fight hard, creating several excellent chances for Joe Gangl, who played an outstanding game.
With 5 minutes remaining, the Raiders went all out and threw everything forward, with Coach Shilcott-Elliott substituting a striker for a defender, and ordering Max Camp up front, which paid off big when a Jordan Berstein throw-in created havoc in front of the Pennridge goal, and Camp got a foot on the ball and evened the game at 3-3 with just 3 minutes remaining.
Overtime saw more exciting action, as well as a number of players cramping up on both sides. Overall Radnor displayed more heart and stamina, but had to settle for the tie after 30 minutes of overtime.
The resulting penalty shoot-out was nerve-wracking to all fans, and I hope I remember the series correctly:
Radnor is first to shoot, with Coach Shilcott-Elliott going with his seniors. Peter Volpert calmly puts his shot in the left side of the goal. The Rams even the score. Then the Pennridge goalie makes an incredible save on a fine shot by Zach Moren, but Ryan Devine saves the next shot also. Game still tied. Chace Wasco makes it look easy, but Pennridge also scores. Then Matt Cherry has the goalie beat but the shot goes just over the cross bar. Though Devine has his hands on the shot, Pennridge scores again. With a fifth player yet to shoot from both teams, the Rams lead 3-2. Captain Max Camp has to hit the target, and he does so with nerves of steel. Still, if Pennridge scores again, they are through. Unbelievably, the player misses wide and high. From then on the shoot-out goes one-and-one. Marshall Steele's shot is saved, but then Ryan Devine saves his second penalty to keep the Raiders alive. Joe Gangl scores easily, but so does Pennridge. Then junior mid-fielder Harry Lawrence puts the Raiders in front with a well-executed shot. The pressure is on Pennridge and it finally falters. With another heroic save, his third, Ryan Devine propels Radnor into the next round, and the entire Radnor team piles on top of him to celebrate the incredible victory.
-----------
The fact that in the other side of the play-off bracket #25 seed Hatboro/Horsham upset #8 seed Abington, means that Radnor gets a totally unexpected home game for the second round. Thursday, Oct 23 at 7 pm on our turf field. Be there to support the team!!
Radnor clinches winning record with 1-0 win over Springfield
Radnor Soccer Boys' Varsity Team (9-7-2, 5-4-2 Central League) ended the regular season on a high note with a tough but deserved 1-0 win over the Springfield Cougars (8-9-1, 3-7-1 Central League), clinching a winning record in the Central League for the first time since 2002.
Springfield came into the game on a 6-2-1 streak over their last 9 games and confidently played the ball deep into the corners testing Radnor's outside defense. The Raiders responded with some quick play of its own. Matt Cherry broke through but was taking down by the defender. No call. A fine combination between strikers Peter Volpert and Conor Osbourne created a good chance that ended with Osbourne being taken down by the Springfield goalie, which in review should have been another PK for Radnor. But not only did the (in general weak) referees not call it, but Osbourne got hurt on the play and could not return for the remainder of the game. We wish him speedy recovery.
The first half ended 0-0, reflecting an overall even play. In the second half Radnor asserted itself more, with Chace Wasco being a calming presence in mid field.
The break-through came with 26 minutes to go in the second half, as Springfield could not clear a long cross into the box due to good pressure by Joe Gangl. The ball dropped in front of Matt Cherry who hammered a volley into the upper left corner, leaving no chance to the Cougar goalie.
Immediately following the goal, Springfield had its best moments, pressing hard for the equalizer. Ryan Devine need to make two very nice saves, but otherwise the defense had the Cougars well in hand. The momentum turned again with further chances for Radnor, such as a header by Michael Superdock and a bicycle kick by Volpert that did not miss the goal by much.
For a few high lights of the game click on the photo on the right. -------------------------------- In their last game of the season, the JV played to a tough 1-1 tie against Springfield's JV, ending the season with a 9-5-5 record. Malcolm Seo scored Radnor's goal with great hustle and determination by following a shot that bounded off the goalie inta sliding Seo. Although Radnor dominated much of the play, Springfield was able to tie the game with a good long-distance shot about midway through the second half. Coach Elias thanks everyone for all their hard work and effort throughout the season!!!!
Radnor comes up short against Strath Haven 1-2
Radnor played one of their best games of the season and for much of the game outplayed the SH team. Our defense led by Max Camp and Jerome Vivino continually stopped the SH forwards and effectively turned the play around to our midfielders who drove through open balls and controlled play with crisp and smart passing throughout the game. Our attack was both balanced and relentless. For much of the first half we controlled the middle and distributed the ball well to both sides.
About midway through the first half SH got the first goal of the night on a perfect free kick that found the tallest player on the pitch open for an unstoppable header. Radnor, however, continued to press the play and were rewarded when Joe Gangel sent Rob Sitoski on a drive that started around midfield. Rob, coming down the left side, battered by an SH defender and tracked by the goalie all the way, showed some incredible moves and determination as he ran through both players and put the ball in the upper right side of the goal.
The game remained tied until about 10 minutes into the second half when SH came up with an errant pass as Radnor was moving into offensive mode. In less time than it takes to tell it, SH found an open player on the right side who crossed it to a teammate for an easy score. Radnor continued to play with confidence and determination creating several exciting scoring chances including a breakaway down the middle late in the game, but unfortunately we were unable to finish.
Based on their level of play and who their opponent was, this had to be one of the most disappointing loses for our boys. But based on their level of play and who their opponent was, this is a game they should be proud of. They came together with a complete team effort and raised their level of play the highest it has been all season. If we are able to get into the playoffs and have the chance to see SH one more time, I think the outcome will be different. (Thanks to Gerry Cooney for the report) ---------- The JV tied Strath Haven JV 0-0: In the first minute of this scoreless contest the JVs earned a quick corner kick. Carlos Paleaz hit a perfect ball to the head of Nick Mathison which slammed off the crossbar and eventually was cleared out by the Strath Haven defense. With this early close goal scoring chance it seemed that Radnor was destined to put away a game Strath Haven squad. However after regulation and several quality scoring chances the Raiders were unable to put one past two average Strath Haven goaltenders. Thursday the JVs will attempt to make this season a 10 win season. (Thanks to Jared Elias) ----------- On Wednesday, the freshmen team lost 2-3 to Haverford HS. Alex Fischman had both goals for Radnor.
Freshmen Success
The freshmen team registered its first victory of the season, winning 3-1 over perennial powerhouse Upper Darby. Alec Fischman had two goals, and Dean DerSemonian had two assists. The team is now 1-2-3, and has its last home game of the season this Wednesday, 10/15, at 3:45 against Haverford. Come out and support our freshmen!
Radnor falls to Shipley 1-3
On the upside, this observer finally did see a pass, even two, between two Radnor strikers, and it led to a goal. But it happened 5 minutes before the end of the game, by which time Shipley had already scored three goals. . . The varsity will hope to do a little better on Tuesday in their big game against Strath Haven, which Radnor has not beaten in 18 years. ------------------------- JV game report by Coach Elias: Radnor 4 Shipley 1 Saturday afternoons contest was perhaps the best game of the year for the JVs. On what Coach Elias calls “Junior Day” four juniors scored to put away a game Shipley squad. Jordan Berstein began imposing his will upon Shipley defenders early in the game making several advantageous runs up the left side of the field. Although there were several close scoring chances none directly resulted in a goal (until the second half for Berstein). About half way through the first half Radnor took a 1-0 lead. After approximately 50 corners we finally got one. Jackson Flail slammed a header into the back of the net off of a perfectly placed corner kick from fellow junior Carlos Palaez. Just a few minutes later Berstein was taken down in the box and Carlos put away the PK to make it 2-0. Just before the half the JVs made it 3-0. Nick Mathison headed in his first goal of the year off of an extra long throw by Berstein. The throw made it all the way to the far post where Mathison waited patiently and headed it past the Shipley goaltender. Shipley was able to get through and score early in the second half to make it 3-1 only to have Jordan Berstein finally break through on his own and put one past the helpless Shipley goaltender.
Radnor Rebounds with 2-0 Win over Harriton
Rob Sitoski scored twice in the first half to help the Raiders up their record to 8-5-2 going into the last three games of the regular season.
On a crisp fall evening a vocal and supportive crowd of Radnor parents took the short drive to Harriton HS to see their team rebound from their worst loss in years and dominate the Rams throughout the first half. Starting with a sharp attack that forced Harriton's goalie make a save within the first minute of play, the Raiders were focused and confident. Pressuring Harriton's possessions early, Radnor kept the Rams from building a cohesive attack and creating any significant chances. As a telling sign of their focus, Radnor's defense did not give up a single corner for the entire game.
It took about 25 minutes for Radnor to get on the board. After a good run on the left wing, Matt Cherry crossed the ball and found Rob Sitoski at the far post, who did not hesitate to put the ball past the goalie. Less than 5 minutes later, a fine combination between Joe Gangl, Sitoski and Peter Volpert led to a great pass on to a charging Sitoski who buried the ball again in the net.
The second half, saw Harriton put up an admirable fight, challenging the ball early and allowing Radnor less of its possession game. Still, the Raiders left little doubt, and even had other good chances as Volpert's shot hit the post, and Conor Osborne forced a good save from the keeper.
At the end of the game, goalie Kyle Furtaw was celebrated by the team for having stood in for the injured keepers Devine and Drennen, and capably directed the defense and preserved the shut-out. -----------------------
The JV played to a 1-1 tie. Captain Jordan Berstein scored for the Raiders. Matt Wiseman's and Carlos Pelaez' solid play on defense stood out Coach Elias' game report:
Radnor
started off the game flat and seemed not ready to play against a team that is
and was easily beatable. Early in the second half the JV's took the lead 1-0.
Carlos Paleaz made a nice change of field pass to Jordan Berstein who beat a
Harriton defender and blasted a shot by the goalkeeper into the side netting.
Shortly
after the go ahead goal after the defense seemingly cleared the ball out
of the back third of the field a Harriton player hit a high pop of a shot
towards an unexpecting goalkeeper that bounced once and somehow found the back
of the net. Although the Raiders fought hard for the last part of the second
half with several near misses at the goal the game remained and finished in a
tie 1-1.
Ouch
Radnor was hit by the soccer equivalent of a freight train, losing 1-6 to Downingtown West, one of the best High School teams in the country. Captained by the remarkable Chris Harmon, and featuring no fewer than four FCDelco players, the Whippets covered more ground with fewer passes than any team Radnor has faced in a long time. Despite the lop-sided score, the Raiders held their own over long stretches, never panicking, winning a good number of one-on-ones, and possessing the ball nicely.
Worse than the loss was the fact that both goalies Ryan Devine and Alex Drennen, and midfielder Michael Superdock went down with injuries. We all wish them speedy recovery
------------ The JV also lost 1-3. The sole score for Radnor came from a heads-up play by Kyle Furtaw.
Radnor vs Haverford High 1-0
Conor Osborne saved the day against a defensively minded team from Haverford High. In an otherwise uneventful game, Osborne provided the high light in the middle of the second half, as he took a ball from the right side of the box, beat two defenders, and blasted an unstoppable shot toward the far post that ricocheted off the inside post into the opposite side of the net. Radnor's stifling defense around senior captains Jerome Vivino and Max Camp made the Haverford attack look utterly harmless. ----------------- The JV outdid the varsity again, beating up on Haverford's JV 5-1. Scorers were Kyle Furtaw, Carlos Pelaez, Jordan Berstein, Kyle Farook and John Bracaglia. ----------------- The previous day, the freshmen team tied Penncrest 3-3. Coach Fortescue noted of the fine play of Shane Hickey who tallied two assists.
Offense Comes to Life with 7-0 Win
If Radnor's offense had tied themselves in knots in previous games, those were undone in spectacular fashion as Radnor recorded its highest victory since the 2004 play-off run with a 7-0 romp over Upper Merion.
Barely 10 minutes into the game, Joe Gangl proved again that he has a nose for the ball by putting away the rebound off a strong shot by Rob Sitoski that had hit the cross bar. At the 25 minute mark, Peter Volpert capped a fine effort along the endline with a nifty lop over the defense to a waiting Chace Wasco who coolly headed the ball into the goal.
Only two minutes later, defender Andrew Miller got into the action in front of Merion's goal by heading the ball toward the far post, where Marshall Steele buried it, and himself, into the net with a spectacular diving header. With 10 minutes still to go in the first half, Sitoski made it 4-0 off a nice serve from Conor Osborne who had gotten behind Merion's defense.
The Raiders far from done, as Osborne continued the scoring after the half with an unassisted goal slotting a shot underneath the goalie. Volpert made it 6-0 with a shot over the goalie after an assist from Robbie Sacks. Finally Zack Moren became the seventh different scorer for Radnor, when a cross from Jordan Berstein went untouched through the Merion's defense to the far post, where Moren was waiting.
In the end it was an all-around promising effort by the Radnor varsity that has fans looking forward to the game on Thursday at 3:30 versus Haverford, and especially against nationally ranked Downingtown West on Friday at 6:30 pm. ------------------------------------ The JV was not any kinder a host to Upper Merion than the varsity, winning 6-1. Radnor led off the scoring midway through the first half on a perfect cross from Charlie Rubin which was headed into the back of the net by Jordan Berstein. At half time the Raiders led only by 1-0. However, only minutes into the second half an over-matched Upper Merion felt the wrath. Goals by Hoon Jin, Kyle Farook, Kyle Furtaw, John Bracaglia and Eric Shea made the game a blow-out.

Thank you
Many thanks to Mel and Bill Camp for hosting, and all present for contributing to, the wonderful party for RHS soccer parents last Friday. The food was delicious, the setting glorious, and a good time was had by all. Good luck to all the teams for the rest of the season. Go Radnor!
Radnor falls to Conestoga 0-1
A
resurgent Conestoga team got a goal from a fine shot off a free kick early in
the first half to take the win. Radnor played well overall, granting Conestoga
few other chances through solid defense, winning most of the 50-50's in
midfield. Michael Superdock showed great hustle and skill at the heart of the
midfield, sparking wave after wave of Radnor effort against the Conestoga
defensive wall. But in the end Radnor lacked decisiveness and a bit of luck to
break through.
-------------------------------
The
JV got revenge by beating Conestoga's JV 2-1. Coach Elias reports:
Radnor
JV rallied back from a one goal deficit to beat rival Conestoga 2-1.
The
first tally came after a great hustle play by Zack Greenberg. The Conestoga
defense played a ball back to their keeper which was botched when Greenberg
arrived at the goalkeeper at the same time the ball did. The ball squirted out
to the right side of the 18 where Kyle Farook hit a shot over the keepers
head. The second goal came on another defensive mishap by Conestoga, this
time Eric Erkis was the beneficiary except this time from the opposite of the
box and again put the ball in the old onion bag just before the keeper and
center back were able to get there to stop it. The defense led by Charlie
Rubin, Eli Feigenbaum, Nick Mathison, and Carlos Paleaz all had outstanding
games. Perhaps the player of the game was goalie Jake Camp who rejected several
good opportunities by Conestoga to seal the victory.
News from the Freshmen
After a tough opening game against Marple-Newtown, losing
0-3, Radnor's freshmen team came back strongly with a fine effort against arch
nemesis Strath Haven, gaining a 2-2 tie. Alec Fischman scored both goals. Peter
Jacome had a great defensive game.
Radnor goes to 5-3-2 after handling Ridley 3-0
In a lop-sided game Ridley's goalie was a busy man, while sophomore sensation Conor Osborne came close to a hat trick.
Throughout the game Osborne showed tremendous drive to the goal that was rewarded with an unassisted score just minutes into the second half. Beating his defenders on the right end-line, he squeezed a hard shot between the goalie and the post.
Soon after that, Chace Wasco played a beautiful pass into the right lane to Joe Gangl who found Osborne unmarked in the middle. Osborne's shot went through the legs of an otherwise very capable Ridley goalie. In fact, it was this goalie who kept the game reasonably close for Ridley with a brilliant save on a point-blank header by Osborne and many more good reactions.
But Radnor's relentless pressure kept Ridley from ever stringing more than a handful of passes together, and after another goal by Sherif Hamid, the game was well in hand with 15 minutes to go.
After that some younger players, such as Carlos Pelaez, Zack Greenberg, Kyle Furtaw and Kevin Hartnett saw a good deal of playing time and acquitted themselves very nicely.
-------------
The JV did even better than the varsity and clobbered a hapless Ridley 5-0.
Goals
were scored by Ahad Khan, John Bracaglia, Eric Shea, Kyle Furtaw, and Kyle
Farook----all scored their first goals of the season. The lone assist of the
game was provided by Jeff Michaelson who played an all around excellent game.
Defensively, Charlie Rubin and Eli Feigenbaum put forth solid efforts in the
victory.
Radnor owns Downingtown East 2-1
Joe Gangl scored and assisted on the winning goal to lift the Raiders over the visiting Cougars from Downingtown East.
In a well-played match the Raiders showed great improvement in all aspects of the game. The defense was strong in the air and on the ground, and the offense started clicking with nifty combinations. The 5-player midfield set a defensive screen that was near impenetrable. Challenging early, Radnor disrupted Downingtown's rhythm, allowing them only a handful of chances. Ryan Devine had two or three saves of long-distance shots, and the Cougars' best chance in the early going was thwarted by a outstanding tackle by Andrew Miller.
Radnor's first goal after 30 minutes of play was controversially disallowed for off-side. Matt Cherry had beaten his defender on the left side and passed into the middle. Downingtown's goalie tried to intercept, but let the ball through to an open Sherif Hamid, who buried the ball in the net. Unfortunately, the referee thought Hamid was off-side, when the ball was passed.
The
disappointment did not last long, as minutes later a corner kick by
Conor Osborne eluded the grasp of the goalie and Joe Gangl was in the
right spot to put the ball in the net for a 1-0 lead.
Only 30
seconds before the end of the half, though, the Raiders showed a
disconcerting weakness when they were still arguing a call, while the
Cougars quickly restarted creating a break-away that tied the game at
1-1.
Despite this setback, Radnor was not deterred and
controlled the game from the outset of the second half with cool
possession play in midfield around Chace Wasco and a variety of ideas up front.
Only near
the 55-minute mark did the Cougars begin to gain their footing and push Radnor
back for a while.
The last 15 minutes, though, were all Radnor again,
who had several good chances. At the 70-minute mark, Joe Gangl beat two defenders with a fine effort along the right wing. The Cougars were
unable to clear his pass to the middle and Peter Volpert put the ball
away for the winning goal.
-------------------
The JV played to a 1-1 tie. Jordan Berstein scored on an assist by Carlos Pelaez. Yeah, captains!
Radnor battles Upper Darby to a 1-1 Tie
In a tight and physical game Sherif Hamid scored his first goal for the varsity, and Ryan Devine made a spectacular save to secure a point for Radnor against a strong Upper Darby team, that had not yet lost a point this season.
There were chances on either side early in the game. A header by Andrew Miller bounced off the crossbar, while individual efforts by UD strikers kept the Radnor defense on their toes. A rare passing play put the Lions in front 1-0 late in the first half. Minutes later, Conor Osborne nearly equalized when his high shot had the goalie beat, but just went over the cross bar.
In the second half, the Raiders asserted themselves with a great deal of pressure emanating from the mid field around Chace Wasco, Harry Lawrence and Michael Superdock in the center and Matt Cherry and Joe Gangl on the wings. That pressure led to success when a shot by Lawrence was deflected into the goal by Sherif Hamid. For the remainder of regulation, the Raiders looked the better team, just missing several chances to take the win.
The
game continued into double overtime, with Radnor still having more of
the game, but the Lions staying very dangerous on counter attacks. Radnor's defense did not
budge, with Max Camp playing another superb game at center back. While the
game was very physical, it was also an exciting match, showing good
progress on the part of Radnor's skill and stamina. ------------
The JV reportedly played a good game too, with chances even and proceedings tied at 1-1 until a questionable call on a handball led to a PK-goal for Upper Darby. Down 1-2, Radnor pushed forward only to yield another goal on a counter attack minutes before the end. Sophomore Hoon Jin scored for Radnor on a great pass by Kyle Farook.

Radnor flattens Garnet Valley 5-1
Avenging
a loss from last year, the Radnor Raiders easily handled the Jaguars in
an early afternoon game. Peter Volpert opened the scoring with a shot
that was meant to be a cross, but floated over the goalie
into the net. Conor Osborne added to the lead with a well-placed shot
from just outside the box, all within the first 15 minutes of the game. In
the second half, three more seniors scored. First Rob Sitoski found the
far corner for a 3-0 lead. Then Garnet's goalie gave up a rebound after
a rocket of a shot from Osborne and Zack Moren quickly seized the
opportunity and scored his well-deserved
first goal for the varsity. He earned another point only minutes later, when Marshall
Steele converted his pass for a 5th Radnor goal. The lone goal for the
Jaguars was a gift from Radnor's defense, who otherwise played flawlessly. --------------------
The JV came back from 0-2 down to tie Garnet's JV 2-2 behind two goals by Dave Morrison.
Radnor plays tough against LM, but loses 0:1
In a game played in driving rain, the Raiders showed great heart and played the defending district champions nearly level all game. Especially the defense around Max Camp played brilliant, with inside defenders backing up the outside, leaving few openings for the Aces' vaunted offense. Their best shot in the first half was nicely saved by Ryan Devine.
About 15 minutes into the second half, LM finally got on the board, when a swerving cross from the left wing was headed in. But Radnor did not give up and created chances of their own. The best one came with about 10 minutes to play, when a free kick by Camp was headed on by Matt Cherry and hit the post. Another bright spot was the level-headed play by Michael Superdock, who is showing great skills in directing the transition game from defense to offense. ------------
Radnor's JV lost an equally tough battle 0-1. Jake Camp was outstanding in goal.
Marple Newtown Escapes with a 2-2 Tie
A dominant Radnor team caught some unlucky breaks that included a penalty kick that should not have been given, and a golden goal scored two seconds too late, and allowed the Tigers from Marple Newtown to leave town with a lucky point.
Radnor looked well in charge, when Peter Volpert scored 10 minutes into the game after great passes from Michael Superdock to Chace Wasco to Volpert, that left him clear of the defense in front of the goal. (View the goal on the right). Further chances included a shot of Conor Osborne that hit the left post. The defense played great, with Robbie Sacks having a superb game at left back.
Shortly before half-time, the game was turned on its head, when a Radnor player shoved a Marple player while jostling for position in the Radnor box awaiting a free kick. While the yellow card may have been justified, the PK was not, as PK's cannot be awarded for infractions that occur when the ball is not in play. (Referees: read the FIFA rules at http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/lawsofthegame.html, page 33) In any case, Marple did not refuse the gift and tied the game at 1-1.
The second half saw continued pressure by Radnor who used a
fine possession game that allowed Marple few chances while creating a
number of opportunities for Radnor players. Matt Cherry, Rob Sitoski,
Sherif Hamid and Volpert all had clear shots on goal that were saved by a strong
MarpleNewtown goalie who must have had a dozen saves for the game.
Finally Volpert broke through again, after a nifty pass from Osborne to
make it 2-1 with about 15 minutes to go. But Radnor could not put the
Tigers away, and as it happened, the Raider's only defensive lapse of the game
allowed the Tigers to equalize the game with 5 minutes to go. Radnor
had one more chance as Rob Sitoski lifted a beautiful lop ball over the
goalie that seemed to seal the game, but incredibly hit the left post,
then the goal line and then the right post, only to fall into the arms of the
goalie, who could not believe his luck.
In overtime it was all
Radnor, but it was the epitome of its luck of the day, that a
potentially golden goal by Sitoski, scored off an Osborne corner came
two seconds too late. Ah. such is life. May Fortuna smile on the
Raiders on another day. -------------
In the JV game, Radnor won 1-0. Zach Greenberg broke a scoreless tie late in the second half from a timely feed by Carter Furtaw. Jake Camp and Ryan Devine were flawless in goal preserving the shut-out.
Radnor Wins Henderson Tournament!
With goals from Max Camp, Conor Osborne and Joe Gangl, Radnor triumphed in the final of the tournament over Henderson HS for the first time after years of participation. The game began with some good chances on both sides that included a shot to the post by Henderson. Max Camp opened the scoring at the 20-minute mark after a brilliant run, that saw him take the ball from his own 6-yard-line all the way to the other end, and scoring on an explosive shot from a near-impossible angle. (To view the goal, click on the picture on the right).
Barely a minute
later Conor Osborne added to the lead with a header after the Henderson
Goalie could not handle a free kick by Camp. The chance was earned by
Michael Superdock who had recovered possession of the ball near
Henderson's box and was fouled in the process.
The teams changed sides with Radnor leading 2-0.
After the break, Henderson came out swinging, scoring off a corner kick only 5 minutes into the second half. Radnor withstood lots of pressure with stout defense by Andrew Miller and Jerome Vivino, and Goalie Ryan Devine making some crucial saves.
Joe Gangl provided great relief with about 20 minutes left in the game, as he was in the right spot when the Henderson goalie gave up another rebound off a stiff shot by Osborne. After that, though they never folded and fought well to the end, the Henderson Warriors could not mount a serious challenge. 3-1 for Radnor was the final score.
Setbacks for the Radnor Raiders
Just days after one of Radnor HS Boys' Soccer's finest efforts since the 2004 championship, a
high-flying Radnor varsity team was brought down to earth, with close
losses to Penncrest and Christopher Dock.
On Thursday the Penncrest
Lions came to town and quickly gave Radnor a taste of its own
Henderson medicine, by scoring two quick goals on a good distance-shot
and a fine cross-field play. That woke up the Raiders who had been
sleep-walking up to that point. A great cross by Matt Cherry was just
tipped away by the goalie, and a well-struck shot by Conor Osborne
shook the cross-bar before the teams changed sides. Despite being down
0-2, Radnor played with heart but somewhat luckless, until Max Camp
hammered the ball into the goal following a corner with 10 minutes to
play. Radnor pressing for the equalizer however left the defense
exposed, and the Lions sealed the game with 4 minutes to go.
Radnor's JuniorVarsity got a measure of revenge by beating Penncrest's JV 1-0 on a goal by Jong Nam after an assist by Jordan Berstein. Jake Camp preserved the shut-out with some strong goal-tending.
On
Friday, the Raiders traveled to Christopher Dock. Missing captain Max
Camp due to injury, and playing after hardly any warm-up, the Raiders
could not get much going and lost 0-2. Bright spots included tireless
efforts by mid-fielders Chace Wasco and Harry Lawrence, and fine play by
freshmen Kevin Hartnett and Eric Hotaling.

Radnor Raiders Open Season with Exciting 3-2 Win Over Council Rock
After three scrimmages ending in ties, Radnor's varsity team opened the season against a good team from Council Rock HS as part of the annual 4-team tournament at Henderson HS in West Chester. Radnor came out strong and determined, scoring early on a long-distance shot into the upper left corner by Peter Volpert. Radnor dominated the first half, winning most balls with strong midfield play. A good run on the left wing by Matt Cherry followed by a centering cross was finished off by Joe Gangl for a 2-0 lead. The defense stood solid allowing only one shot on goal on a free kick that was well saved by Ryan Devine. The tables were turned in the second half, with Council Rock pressing hard, and Radnor all of a sudden looking tired. After the teams traded headers that hit the cross bar, Council Rock finally connected on an unstoppable long-range shot. A bit later, with less than 10 minutes to go in regulation, as Radnor was unable to clear the ball out of the danger zone, Council Rock equalized the game at 2-2, sending the game into extra time. Momentum swung Radnor's way in overtime, with the Raiders again taking control. A swift run by Peter Volpert beating his defender along the touchline led to a centering pass to Conor Osborne who was taken down by the no 2 in the gold jersey. Conor himself converted the resulting penalty kick, leading to a wild celebration of a deserved win.
