Most every county public high school basketball team is involved in holiday tournament action this week and three major tournaments are scheduled in the county.
The first two local tournaments begin on Thursday with the News-Post Classic at Frederick Community College and the Ron Engle Classic at Middletown. On Friday, the IAABO Tuscarora Board 214 Tournament begins at the Knott Arena at Mount St. Mary's.
The News-Post Classic features a boys and a girls division. In the boys division, Frederick, Thomas Johnson and Linganore are the local teams involved while, in the girls division, Brunswick, Catoctin, St. John's-Catholic Prep and Tuscarora are the four teams.
In boys play on Thursday, Frederick faces River Hill in the first game at 6 p.m. with TJ facing the Lancers in the second game. The consolation game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday with the title game to follow.

Lions defeat Lancers
Pass it to Jordan

WALKERSVILLE ----Despite leading by 18 at halftime, Walkersville boys basketball coach Bruce Zimmerman noticed an immediate problem on the Lions' stat sheet.
Junior forward Jordan Dixon had only touched the ball six times in the first half of Monday night's game with Linganore.
So, the Lions passed Dixon the ball on their first possession of the second half and he scored. They gave it to him on their second possession and he scored again.
The scene repeated itself throughout the third quarter.
Dixon accounted for all 13 of his team's points in the third and Walkersville rolled to a 68-45 victory over the Lancers.
"He is our third-leading scorer," Zimmerman said. "We are counting on a lot from Jordan."
Yet, Dixon can disappear for stretches in Walkersville's offense, even though he stands 6-foot-4 and is built like a lineman.
The Lions (4-0) shoot a high number of 3-pointers and much of the offense is run through leading scorer Jabari Brown.
Brown scored a game-high 22 against Linganore, while Dixon added 19.
"We try not to forget about Jordan, even though Jabari and Scott (Morris) are our big guns," Zimmerman said.
"When we start running, we look to shoot the 3. We look inside, but we'll shoot the 3 if it's there. Sometimes, he may go some possessions without touching it. We got to remember Jordan has to touch the ball."
While they were never in any serious danger against Linganore, the Lions needed Dixon.
Brown picked up his third foul with 6:28 left in the third, forcing him to the bench for most of the quarter.
Dixon took over inside and kept the Lions' offense going.
"This was our first time playing against a man-to-man defense. Our last three games have had 2-3 zones. So, it's pretty much been just shooting. I am just in there getting all the rebounds," Dixon said.
"In a man-to-man defense, I get a lot more opportunities to score."
Walkersville made 9-of-13 3-pointers against Linganore to keep its percentage above 50 percent from behind the arc this season.
Brown drained four 3-pointers. Morris made three and finished with 14 points. Kevin Jandovitz made one for his only points of the game.
"That helps me a lot," Dixon said. "Once they get going, that seems to get me open a lot more."
Dixon doesn't have to score a lot or need the spotlight on him to be happy. He enjoys doing "the dirty work" in Walkersville's high-powered offense.
All he asks of his team is that he is not forgotten.
Lions outmuscle Coyotes - move to 2-0
Lions outmuscle Coyotes, 73-39

WALKERSVILLE -- The Walkersville boys basketball team outmuscled Clarksburg in the post in a 73-39 victory Thursday night, improving to 2-0 overall.
As a team, the Lions grabbed 23 offensive rebounds and scored a majority of their points off second-chance shots.
"We didn't shoot nearly as well tonight as we did last game," Walkersville head coach Bruce Zimmerman said. "We had to find other ways to get the ball in. We were getting a lot of offensive rebounds. "
With forwards Jordan Dixon and Jabari Brown, the Lions pose a double-threat under the basket.
Dixon, a junior, led the Lions with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, nine of which were offensive boards, while Brown, a senior, contributed 18 points and nine rebounds.
"Our inside game revolves around Jordan and Jabari," Zimmerman noted. "Jordan is our power-man under the basket. He was clearing people out tonight. Jabari continues to lead the team. He's a good player and we follow his lead."
But Dixon notes that Walkersville's inside game would not be complete without the strength of the Lions' guards.
"We have a pretty big lineup this year," Dixon said. "We have big guards that do a pretty good job of getting the ball to us," Dixon said.
Sophomore guard Scott Morris rounded out Walkersville's high scorers with a career-high 19 points, 11 of which were scored in the first quarter.
The lone sophomore on this year's varsity team, Morris has emerged as a leader this season among a squad of veterans.
"He's a very smart player," Zimmerman said.
Morris also made seven steals and dished out four assists.
"I didn't think my role would be this big this year," Morris said. "I've ended up doing more scoring than I though I would have to. My shot is more confident this year."
Morris helped Walkersville jump off to a 7-0 start, scoring five points in the first two minutes of the game. In the waning seconds of the first quarter, Morris stretched the Lions' lead to 21-8 with his second three-pointer of the game.
With 6:50 to go in the second quarter, Clarksburg fought back to make the score 22-13. This was the closest the Coyotes would come for the remainder of the game.
Walkersville then went on a 16-0 run to end the half with a 43-17 edge.
In the third quarter, Clarksburg finally found its rhythm -- the Coyotes were only outscored by four points. But Walkersville never let up, making a 12-2 run in the final stanza to secure the win.
Senior Marquis Franklin led Clarksburg with eight points and senior Eddie Raff had seven.
Walkersville's JV team lost to Clarksburg game, 45-38. Brett Zimmerman led the Lions with 20 points.
