2009 Playoffs
A'S vs TIGERS
Game 3 proved to be a pitching battle between Jimbo and Keith. In the first inning Jon got on for the A's with a double. Then with one out Norrman hit a line drive to Tony, where he made a one handed grab to end the inning. Pitching and defense took over from there as no runs were scored until the 5th. Keith led off the inning with a double. With Tony striking out, Antonio hit a shot to left field that hit off the cars, scoring keith from 2nd. That was the only run of the game as the Tigers won the game 1-0 and advanced to their 3rd straight AWL championship.
NATS vs PADRES
In a game that no one, except the Nationals, thought would played Game 3 between the 13-2 Padres and the 4-11 Nationals took place. As it was in Game 1, it was Greg vs Dave on the mound. With solo homers by Dave and Greg, the lead was 1-1 after 6 innings of play. The game was then called because of darkness and played the next day. This gap must have sparked something for the Nats as Conor and Tyler hit homers off Dave, who was nearly unhittable all year. In the biggest upset in the history of the AWL, the Nationals advance to the AWL championship with a 4-1 win over the heavily favorited Padres
AWL CHAMPIONSHIP
NATS vs. TIGERS
In one of the more dramatic championship series played to date, the Nationals shocked the wiffleball world and came out on top with their 1st championship after a 4-11 regular season. In game 1, Conor Rogan belted a 2 run shot early off Keith to take the lead. After a comeback, the Nats drew the game winning run in from 3rd on a bases loaded walk by Greg in the 8th. In Game 2, Antonio gave the Tigers an early lead before the Nats rallied for a 2-1 lead. A blown save by Greg let the game go into extras where Conor Rogan struggled in the 9th to allow the Tigers to win 5-2. In game 3, Conor showed up in a big way with a grand slam off Keith in the 2nd. He followed that up with 2 more home runs and 7 total RBI to boost the Nats to their first AWL Championship.
What's Next?
After a successful 4th season, the AWL plans on bringing in the 5th season with a new look and new teams. At the Winter Meetings the captains will talk about changes to the league if any are needed and will also determine what events will take place in the 2010 decathlon. This decathlon between the 4 Captains will take place in the spring of 2010 and through a points system, it will determine who gets the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th picks in the draft. Keep checking back for updates and news!
