Mission Statement

The Capital Beltway League is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth football organization, comprised of community based Youth Sports Clubs located in Washington DC and the Prince Georges & Montgomery County areas of Maryland.

The Capital Beltway League was founded and incorporated in 1969 by Max Cunningham, Dwight Schum and Michael Weed in Montgomery County, Md. Their goal was to combat juvenile delinquency by organizing, establishing, promoting and supporting team sports for youngsters.

The Capital Beltway League is comprised of volunteers providing competent leadership and positive adult mentors. Our volunteers teach the fundamentals and mechanics of youth football to youths aged between 5 to 14. There is an emphasis on team play, “esprit de corps”, sportsmanship and a healthy competition within the league.

Our primary objective is to provide the essential guidance and tools necessary to develop positive social values, resilient character traits and to instill a desire and ability to compete fairly, to be courageous in defeat and the humility to win with grace.

Sponsorship information
Over the past few years, the football programs involved with the Capital Beltway League have been steadily growing and improving. With the 2000 season, the league saw major changes with the joining of four established clubs from the Montgomery County Recreation Program. The league introduced two divisions; the American Division, which competes for the opportunity to play in, a Beltway Area Youth Football Superbowl, and the National Division comprised of overflow teams from the American Division. Introduction of “Division” play has provided an opportunity for more children to participate, who may have otherwise been turned away due to lack of teams or the ability of clubs to handle multiple teams at a specific weight class. Both Divisions provide a competitive environment striving for championship titles.

Beginning with the 2003 season, an Unlimited Weight Division was added for bigger players who might otherwise not have the opportunity to play until high school. This Division is for players age 11 to 14. This is a great opportunity for "the big boys" who will likely play football in high school to get the playing experience now.

The 2005 season brought more change and growth to the league. With eight clubs from Prince Georges County and Washington, D.C. joining us for the '05 season, we became a true "Beltway League". We are working toward offering every weight class in the American and National Divisions with even more overflow teams playing in a Central Division. By offering three divisions, we'll provide our clubs the best competition suited to their organization. Each division will continue to provide a competitive environment striving for championship titles.

The CBL’s fees, paid by each organization, cover the league expenses such as administration, officials and post season. There are players’ families who have trouble affording the initial fees to join a team, and some have the added expense of equipment when an organization can’t supply everything.

Your sponsorship will help defer the costs of participation in our league, and in turn each organization can pass that savings on to their players. As a CBL sponsor, your company name will be placed on our web site and in our post-season programs. In addition, we would like to offer specific children from each of our clubs a players’ scholarship. Although many of our clubs offer scholarships to players, they often take that fee as a loss of revenue needed to maintain their organization. Fees are needed to purchase uniforms and maintain equipment for our players’ safety. The participating clubs of the CBL are non-profit organizations, so your donation will be tax deductible. Our goal is to offer each club at least one scholarship each year. Clubs will submit a list of qualified recipients. Awards will be presented to club commissioners at our annual coaches certification, traditionally held in late July.

Our season starts August 1st, but recruiting and advertising starts in early spring. We have board meetings every month. I would like to be able to tell our participating organizations that you will be helping our kids this year.

With the support of our communities, we will continue to strive for excellence in the years ahead.
