2010 HCBL Preseason Rankings
#1 Alabama Crimson Tide: The preseason #1 team in the League is the Alabama Crimson Tide. They are returning all of their starters from last year and will be adding a few more additions. Last year they only had two loses and both of them came to Virginia Tech. This year they look to capture the Rose Bowl Championship and win the College League title. Head coach Dave Bartels (Punk) has yet to win a Bowl game in the College League but this could be his year.
#2 Maryland Terps: Like the Crimson Tide the Terps are returning their starters this year. Coach George Diamond has Maryland high in the rankings despite last year’s record. Due to scheduling conflicts last year George could not play in a BCS Bowl. That was the only thing keeping him from a bowl bid. This year he’s back and look for the Terps to put up a fight in their quest to the Rose Bowl.
#3 Missouri Tigers: Raiderman heads to another new team this year. A year after winning the National Championship Game with Virginia Tech he’s off to coach Chase Daniel and the Missouri Tigers. We asked him about the Rose Bowl and he mentioned that it is a possibility but as long as “mouths” stay quiet this year he’ll be happy with a Fiesta or Sugar Bowl bid. Ut oh. Looks like the Raiderman is in cruise control mode again until someone talks smack.
#4 Penn State: One year after capturing their first Bowl win in the history of the League Clint Snyder has Penn State in the top 5. We look for Penn State to be a force in the north this year. They’ll need to get past Maryland and Missouri to get to the Rose Bowl but they do have the team to do it. They’re returning their veterans also and their off season recruiting is looking good too.
#5 Florida State: The Noles are on the map but for how long we’re not sure. This veteran group of players won the Fiesta Bowl last year in amazing fashion. A 27-17 win over the defending League Champion South Carolina puts FSU on the map early this year. The Noles are in the south again this year which looks to be a wide open conference. They’ll have a chance at South Carolina again this year but this time it will be a regular season game.
#6 South Carolina: This veteran team of players is two years removed from their heroic season in 2008 when they won the National Championship Game. Former Heisman winner #12 is in the backfield again this year as South Carolina looks to get back to their winning ways. They’re playing in the weaker Southern Conference so a chance for the Rose Bowl is realistic but they’ll have to get past Alabama and Florida State for that.
#7 Georgia Bulldogs: The Bulldogs have a great team to compete for the Rose Bowl. Their head coach seems to be the one holding them back. The word around Georgia’s campus this season is FOCUS. Warren Ritter is getting his team focused this year and some key games early in the season could set the tone for the remainder of the year. Look for Georgia to play hard and finally make it to a BCS Bowl game.
#8 Michigan Wolverines: Completing the top 8 coaches are the Michigan Wolverines. They fired their head coach last year and hired Gabe Bruno a veteran College League coach. Bruno won the League with Marshall back in 2004. This year Michigan hired him to bring the Wolverines back to stardom. He heads into the 2010 season with a great team. The receiving corp is possibly the best in the League. The defense really flies to the ball. They’re starting the season ranked 8th but by mid season they could be a lot closer to #1.
