Commack Fire Play the Bermuda National Team at the Bermuda Clyde Best Tournament
February 16, 2007 Echoing throughout Gate 23 of Kennedy Airport’s JetBlue terminal was the usual cacophony resulting from the less than harmonious aural stew of American accents, foreign tongues, PA announcements and shrieking emergency door alarms. For nearly two hours on February 16, the prospective airplane passengers had instead been riding the emotional roller coaster fueled by conflicting rumors regarding takeoff times and potential cancellations. There was even some added dread – albeit short-lived – over the possible need to enlist a crew from upstate Newburgh.
Amid all this confusion, however, 14 young men dressed in their Commack Fire soccer warm-ups patiently sidestepped the tedium by listening to iPods, playing games on their PSP’s , reading, or conversing in eager anticipation of their upcoming tournament in Bermuda. Of course, the flight eventually did get underway and, despite some minor turbulence, the boys and their families were soon safely back on the ground, through Bermuda customs, and checking into their rooms at Grotto Bay.
The two-day tournament, which featured formidable competition that included two Connecticut state squads, a Pennsylvania select team and the Bermuda Nationals, handed the Fire some immediate adversity. In the country only a few hours, sweeper Adam Tamburello took an unexpected tour of the local hospital facilities after opening a small gash in his head while spelunking. Seven minutes into the opening match the next morning, starting goalkeeper J.J. Weiss suffered a debilitating knee injury that made him unavailable for the rest of the tournament. In addition, forward Danny Morales, in bed with a fever, would miss both Saturday games. Commack was suddenly down to one substitute.
Salvaging a scoreless tie after a first-game setback, the Fire players remained optimistic, and that night enjoyed the camaraderie and international goodwill fostered by the all-teams (well, almost all) dinner. Rarely had such mediocre food been a part of so many priceless memories.
The next morning, the boys faced Pennsylvania in a physical, wind-torn confrontation that ended in a frustrating, somewhat controversial defeat. It was the final match Sunday afternoon against the incredibly talented -- and rather physically imposing -- Bermuda eleven, however, that brought the best out of the Commack players. The boys’ tenacity against the bigger, generally faster, and quite possibly older host squad resulted in Alex Joseph’s last-second conversion of Matt Tamburello’s corner kick. The goal triggered a huge ovation from the Bermuda supporters, and judging by the Commack players’ reaction, the Fire had earned not only respect, but also a considerable dose of self-respect on this particular occasion.
Despite the convincing 6-1 loss, the Fire clearly showed that its members possess the talent, coaching and --most importantly -- heart to compete with the best. As Coach Tony pointed out, “We didn’t win, but the boys showed that they can play with anyone without being embarrassed.”
Feeling great about themselves regardless of the match results, the Fire enjoyed a rousing Sunday night team dinner at the Swizzle Inn. The food was enjoyable, the conversation pleasant… but the bill tabulation mind-numbingly complicated.
True, there wasn’t much sun for most of the time Commack spent in Bermuda, but the team forecast calls for a bright future.

Commack Fire Helps South African Xtreme Team
    March 1, 2007 Dear RFC,

What an AMAZING day for me today!!!!

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!! We received the gear today that you have
sent us. The boys were above themselves, and couldn't believe their
eyes. We were so happy and there was a few tears of joy today!!
Honestly, we don't know how to thank you for the wonderful gift. This
doesn't only make us feel proud in our hearts, but proud to be young
men with talents, and other young men supporting us and sharing our
passion for a better future in our life's!

The team wish you the best of luck with all you do, and would like to
invite you if you come to South Africa to join us in playing soccer.

Hope this is a start of a great friendship, and the boys will write
    back soon!!

Take good care, and the team asked me to pass this message:

"May God be with you and bless your hearts for helping us"

    Best regards
    Xan.
