2009 GPMABL Season Recap
The inaugural season for the Drexel Hill Dodgers was very successful on and off the field. We started working out as a team back in early February, one hour each Sunday until Easter weekend.
The day before Easter Sunday we held our 1st annual Beer Pong Tournament. The tournament was played by a whopping 48 teams. We raffled off Phillies Hall of Fame Club tickets, a giant Basket of Cheer filled with top notch liquor and every attendee that day walked away with a T-shirt! Who doesn’t like a free T-shirt?!??!? This event was truly a great way to start our first season as a team.
The following weekend was our first doubleheader as a unit, and we absolutely hit the ground running full speed. We crushed HRs, scored tons of runs, pitched very well and played surehanded baseball to secure our first 2 wins that opening weekend against a very good Delco Blue Rocks team. The following weekend we swept the eventual GPMABL champion Bucks County Reds and the summer was started right.
We grinded through the season, battling every weekend, sometimes beating or dominating opponents to sometimes struggling to reach the potential we needed to show. We ended up the regular season as the 5 seed but set offensive records in our wake. The 2009 Dodgers compiled a team batting average of .336, which was the highest the league has seen in recent memory. We also led the league in Hits, HRs, 3Bs, SLG%, OPS and Sacrifices.
We made the Final Four of the Playoff “Tournament” and met our demise in Game 3 of our semi-final series ending our season there to the eventual champion Reds.
Every player contributed in some way or fashion that meant so much to the team. Mike Thompson and Gerry Sasse need to be recognized as quality veteran pitchers. Willie Liggins, Zac Bradley, Chris Drobish, Doug D’Aulerio, Joe Juliano all played very key roles in providing stellar glove work. Our offense that was talked about earlier was led by Avis Smith, Adam Kuchemba, Rick Bates, Lu Selles, Brian Ward and basically EVERYONE WHO STEPPED INTO THE BOX AS A DODGER!
In closing, the 2009 season was played very well by all, and the 2010 Dodgers look to continue the quality of play and move towards a championship next season.
