Lyndhurst moves on to play the Hackensack Toasts Saturday @ 10:00am in Brooklyn.

New Haven, CT Regional

The NJABL Champion Wyckoff Raiders made a very strong showing in the CT. NABF Regional Tournament. Finishing 3-2, the Raiders made it to the semi-finals of the regional bracket.

Game One (Thurs. 8/6) Wyckoff Raiders vs. Bellow’s Chiropractic (CT)
Wyckoff lost their opening round game against Bellow’s 3-2 in eight innings.  Wyckoff fell behind 2-0 in the 2nd inning but was able to tie the score by the 6th. Starter Cory Kuzmik pitched very well but Wyckoff was unable to hold Bellow’s as they won on a one out base hit to plate the winning run.  Kuzmik pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits and striking out 6.

Game Two (Fri 8/7) Wyckoff Raiders vs. New Rochelle Robins (NY)
Needing a sweep of Friday’s doubleheader Wyckoff fell behind early to New Rochelle, with a score of 4-0 by the end of the 1st. Lefthander P.J. Saporito brushed off 1st inning trouble and began to settle down. Wyckoff’s bats woke up by the 2nd inning, being led by Saporito himself.  CF Garrison Ward, LF Dan Lupo (West Milford) and Saporito all homered for Wyckoff, with Saporito hitting two home runs on the day.   Saporito went 6 innings to earn the win and RHP Steve Arroyo-Falcon (Englewood) came into the 7th to earn the save as Wyckoff was able to take game one by a score of 8-4.

Game Three (Fri. 8/7) Wyckoff Raiders vs. Milford Hunters (CT)
Back in contention the Raiders looked to sweep their Friday doubleheader, but it would turn out to be no easy task.  Embarking on their second extra inning game out of three, Wyckoff and Milford battled back and forth. Wyckoff starter Tim Hannes pitched 6 very strong innings allowing only 2 hits and striking out 4. In the 9th inning 3B Mike Mordeci drew a two out walk, which was followed by RF Aaron Drury, who blasted a 2 run HR over the leftfield fence for a walk off win for the Raiders.  RHP Steve Arroyo-Falcon (Englewood) pitched two innings of relief to earn the win for the Wyckoff.

Game Four (Sat. 8/8) Wyckoff Raiders vs. West Haven Greenwoods (CT)
Needing a victory to enter the semifinals of pool play, Wyckoff would again take the game into extra innings as they battled Greenwood to a 1-1 tie after eight innings.  The Raiders would work the bases loaded in the 9th inning when up stepped DH Mike Jakupcionis. After a Greenwood pitching change Jakupcionis singled on the 1st pitched to seal the win for the Raiders and propel them into semifinal action on Saturday night.  LHP Chris Rastelli (Orangeburg) pitched all nine innings refusing to surrender and picked up the victory.

Game Five (Sat. 8/8) NABF Semi-finals Wyckoff Raiders vs. A Plus Plumbing (CT)
Battled hardened and weary the Raiders entered semifinal action against perennial NABF World Series contender and West Haven Twilight League Champion,  A Plus Plumbing.  Despite a very strong 8 innings from starter Dave Cahoon, A Plus proved to be too much for the Raiders as they fell by a score of 7-0.

All in all the Wyckoff Raiders and Lyndhurst Rebels made very strong showings in their NABF Regional Tournaments.  Both teams supplemented already strong rosters with draft picks from the other teams in the league which illustrated the depth and quality of NJABL talent pool.  Congratulations to them, as well as all of the NJABL teams, on yet another successful year of top quality amateur baseball.

Wyckoff pitcher P.J. Saporito again proved why he is one of the elite pitchers in the league, as he tossed a complete game, striking out 4, while only walking one batter.  The Raiders look to continue their winning streak as they head to West Haven, Conn. for NABF regional play.
