NEMHA will be holding open tryouts for the Atom and Peewee Developmental teams who will participate in the Provincial Tournaments the week of April 5, 2010.

The teams will be chosen from hockey league players who are members of NEMHA and who have no outstanding fees prior to the teams be selected. A Selection Committee will select the teams from those players trying out.

A $20 tryout fee to cover both ice rentals/officiating costs must be paid by all players prior to the first skate.

Final team rosters will be announced on the NEMHA website after the Selection Committee finalizes team selection.

The usual player fee will apply to all named to the teams. This amount will be set by the Executive in the near future but should be in line with similar fees charged in the past.

Due to the influenza and flu-like symptoms this season some teams may find it a struggle to ice full rosters for games. Therefore, to keep things flowing as smoothly as possible, a temporary measure will be put in place whereby teams will only be obligated to dress a minimum of 10 skaters and one goalie for their games.

Coaches are expected to make every effort to use call-ups to ice full rosters for each game. Parents are encourage to contact coaches as soon as possible if their child is unable to make a game.

This temporary policy will remain in effective until it is deemed by the League Administrator at such flexibility is no longer warranted.

We would like to thank everyone for their co-operation.

Due to concerns regarding the potential spread of H1N1 influenza, effective immediately and until further notice, players are to replace the normal post-game handshake with a tapping of hockey gloves only. Also the sharing of water bottles is also strongly discouraged.

House League
The Northeast Minor Hockey Association is proud to announce that it will operate its own house league beginning with the 2009/10 hockey season.

During the past decade or so, Northeast sent its house league players to Twin Rinks to participate in the Capital City House League, operated by St. John’s Minor. However the growth of our association has allowed us to bring all the members back home, and operate our own house league out of Jack Byrne Arena.

“This has been an exciting year of growth for Northeast, with the opening of our own home arena, the changing of our association colours and logo and the dramatic increase in our registration” says Donnie Power, president of the association. “The executive expects this growth to continue next year and the year after, and to facilitate that growth, the executive feels it’s the proper time to operate our house league out of Jack Byrne Arena.”

In addition to the change of association colours and logo, this past year saw Northeast run a very successful initiation program that saw 66 children get introduced to the game.

Northeast Minor Hockey operated six divisions this past year, with 326 children, ranging in age from 4 to 17, registered. That represents an approximate 20 per cent increase in registration from the previous year, and 100 per cent growth since 2004. We forecast this growth to continue.

More details will be announced during the Northeast Minor Hockey Annual General Meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 7 p.m. at the Jack Byrne Arena Community Room.
