MLS' Rapids pick Ceus in draft

North Rockland graduate Steward Ceus yesterday became the first Rockland native to be drafted by an MLS team, taken in the third round by the Colorado Rapids with the 37th pick at the 2009 MLS SuperDraft in St. Louis.
Ceus, a senior at the University at Albany, just got back from the MLS Player Combine last weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he was one of seven goalkeepers invited. He was watching the draft online at his apartment with his roommates yesterday afternoon when he saw his name come up.
"For a second it was disbelief, I don't even know what to feel at this point. I'm still shaking," Ceus said. "It's always been a dream to play professionally. I set that as my goal going into college, and it's finally coming true."
Ceus, who was recently named to the NSCAA/adidas All-America third team, was the America East Conference Goalkeeper of the Year. He eclipsed Division I program records for career shutouts (19) and saves (329) while posting an .856 save percentage, a 0.96 goals-against average and seven shutouts this fall.
Ceus finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in saves per game (5.93) and ninth in save percentage as UAlbany (12-4-2) matched a Division I program record for wins set in 2004.
"It's definitely an honor," Ceus said. "It's hard to put it into perspective right now. Everything happened at once. It's a great accomplishment on my part."
The West Haverstraw native was a four-year starter at North Rockland, where he set the school record for shutouts in a season (14 his junior year) and career (34) and earned all-section honors three times.
"We've very proud of him over here," Red Raiders coach Peter McGovern said.
