2008 World Championships results
November 19, 2008
The Australian national team, the Dingoes, was in Canada earlier this month to contest the 2008 World Championships. NQ had 12 players and 1 referee at the event and even though results went against the Aussie teams, lots of fun was had and the experiences learned will stand broomball in our country in good stead in the future.
The only team to bring home any silverware was the Men's 2 team, who picked up the bronze medal (well actually, a glass plaque) in the North American Cup, defeating local team JCC Cement Heads in the final. Three-time Aussie rep and NQ player Peter Shannon was selected as Captain of the Men's 2 team.
Men's 1 fared well against the other international teams with wins over Italy, Japan and Switzerland, but suffered at the hands of the experienced Canadian and American tams and eventually lost out in the Challenge Cup finals.
The Ladies team did well to finish fourth in the round robin to progress to the qualifiers for the World Cup, however the more experienced ladies teams proved to have too much for our girls. The girls showed their fighting spirit though and were tough opponents for all they played.
The Mixed team worked very hard, making up for their lack of experience, but eventually lost out in the fight for the bronze medal in the Challenge Cup with an agonising 5-4 loss to host team Burnaby Buzz. NQ was well represented in the leadership group with Robert Corica (captain), Charis Burnham-Post and Leisha McTaggart (assistant captains) given the honour of leading their country in this team.
Full results from the tournament, including stats, can be found at www.internationalbroomball.com.
Congrats again to the Aussie teams, and we look forward to sending another strong group to the 2010 World Championships, which will be held in Innsbruck, Austria.
