Practice for Wednesday, 6/17 is cancelled
June 17, 2009 - 10:30 PM Practice for Wednesday, 6/17 is cancelled. Wheeler is not available. They are setting up for Graduation. I will call if we are playing beyond this week.

After a slow start in game 1 at the RI Hawks tournament the OSW 17's played some solid basketball and won 2 out of three games. In the first game a 27 point lead was to much to over come. The Waves did battle back and cut the deficit to single digits before loosing by 11. In the 2nd game the Waves rallied back from 10 down at half to win by three. Our big front line dominated in the paint. Gui Ramos and Josh Hohfelder did most of the damage. The guards lead by Conor Gleason and DeAnte Norton made some timely plays to help secure the win. Mike Bond again played outstanding defence.

OSW had two nice wins Saturday at Marianapolis Prep School in Thompson Ct. Being shorthanded did not hold the team back. (5 players attended) Josh Hohlfelder shot the ball well in both games. Gui Ramos was dominant on both ends of the court. His passing and rebounding skills were noted by Worchester State College Asst. Coach who was at the tournament on Saturday. Coach Vitale really liked both Josh and Gui's game and expressed an interest in recruiting both players.
Mike Bond stepped up in this tournament and stepped out of his brother Stefan's shadow. Mike showed that there is more to his game than just defense. He scored in a variety of ways and showed a lot of balance in his game that we had not seen up to this point. DeeAnte Norton did a nice job running the point and contributed to the offense with some timely 3 point shooting. Nate Hohlfelder stepped up with the varsity players and played very well in both games. He held his own on the boards and stuck some big shots when needed. He also kept the coaching staff on their toes with a variety of questions. Nice job by all who attended.

    U16 Gold Wheaton tournament results
May 27, 2008 - 06:30 PM The Ocean State Waves Gold team won their devision at the Wheaton Jam Fest this past weekend. The Gold went 2 - 1 in pool play defeating Team Mass and CMAC Hawks by +20 scores. The Gold lost to Mass AAU in a tight game 45 - 42. In the championship game the Gold got a little revenge beating Mass AAU by 7. The game was not as close as the final score indicated as the Gold held a 20 point lead for most of the 2nd half. In the closing minutes the play was sloppy. Mass AAU made some long range 3 pointers but in the end the Gold earned the win. Leading the way in the championship game Jeremy Cumberlander had 25 points and was the best player on the court. He scored in a variety of ways. 3's, freethrows, drives and put backs. Gui Ramos did a nice job patroling the lane and also chipped in on offense. Ethan Doescher, Zach Wells, Joe Sciro and Will Gazlay also had nice games on the boards and chipped in with some timely offense. Conor Gleason ran the point teaming with Jeremy to control the game. They both were required to play extended minutes on Sunday because the Gold only had 2 guards and 7 players total.
Tournament high lights.... Gui Ramos scored in double figures in all 4 games and was dominant in the paint. Conor Gleason had 27 points in the 1st game and had double figures in 3 games. Will Gazlay consistantly scored inside and lead the Gold in rebounds for the tournament. Ethan Doescher emerged as a scoring option in the championship game hitting jumpers and put backs. Zach Well had a solid tournament scoring big baskets in all 4 games. Zach also played very physical as his foul total indicated. Zach is one of the three 15 year olds playing up on the Gold this season and is consistently competing on a high level. Joe Sciro enjoyed a solid tournament doing a little bit of everything. He was involved in the battle on the boards and also had several big shot blocks. Joe also scored in all 4 games. Jeremy played great all weekend running the offense along with Conor. On Saturday Jeremy struggled with his outside shot but that all changed on Sunday. In the big spot he stepped up and lead the Gold.

Results from the Commotion by the Ocean tournament
May 12, 2008 - 11:30 PM The U16 Gold competed in the Breakers Commotion by the Ocean this weekend. Lost a tough game to Providence United by 5 points. The game could have gone either way but ultimately PU won the battle on the boards and that gave them the edge they needed. In the 2nd game the Gold dominated the Maine Lumbar Jacks and recorded a 23 point victory. The Gold played inspired basketball and won all the battles. In the 3rd game on Saturday the Gold lost decisively to a well rested RI Breakers team playing their first game of the day. The Breakers won going away pounding the Gold on the backboards and at the 3 point line. It ended up a 20 point loss but it seemed like more.

OSW Gold U16's win the open division at the Neil Hoelck tournament at Waterford, Ct.
March 16, 2008 - 02:45 PM The OSW Gold U16 team defeated the Mystic Fire Co. team comprised of players from Fitch and Montville High School. On the way to the championship game the Gold defeated the Ct. Spurs (59 - 30) and the G town Ballas (48 - 41), a team comprised of Griswold High School players. In the championship game the Gold pushed to an early lead and held it for the rest of the game. The final score was 54 - 46. Josh Bowyer had a strong tournament leading the offense along with Zach Wells. Josh consistently knocked down his jump shot all tournament. Zach was big in the pick and role offense. Nick Donahue did a nice job running the point and scoring when needed. Dylan Rapoport backed Nick up at the point and kept the offense moving. Tyler Ward also provided consistant offense in all three games. Mike Bond played outstanding defense in the championship game. His man to man defense shut down Mystics point guard in the second half and allowed OSW to control Mystics offense. Ethan Doescher lead the Gold in blocked shots and held down the back line in the Zone defense. Will Gazlay played physical defense in all three games making the opponent settle for outside shots. Brendan Wilkins made his OSW debut in the tournament championship game and was a major factor on the boards. Brendan also provided some offense and made a nice first impression. Congratulations to the team on their victory and the nice start to the season.

    MASS PREMIER TOURNAMENT
April 7, 2008 - 06:30 PM The Ocean State Waves U16 Gold played well this weekend at the Mass
Premier tournament in Foxboro. The Gold had two solid victories on
Saturday vs the Ct. Knight's and the Cobra's. That put the Gold in a position to play for the championship if they could defeat the
Mass Premier team at their home facility. It was a exciting
game that took two overtimes to decide the winner. Unfortunately for the
Waves Mass Premier came out on top.

    Hall of Fame Tournament
May 20, 2008 - 10:35 AM The OSW Gold were aware that the compition at the Hall of Fame tournament would be very good. They also were aware that the officiating would be a step up from the tournaments they have competed in during this AAU season. It was only natural that the Gold would raise their level of play to match the competition. On Saturday the Gold put their best 2 basketball games of the season back to back to win their pool. In the first game the Gold defeated the NY Pride by 13 points. The Pride had some outstanding shooters and that kept them in the game. In the end the Gold pounded the ball inside and had there way on the boards. All the Gold players contributed to this win. Stefan Bond made a variety of shots and lead the offense. Conor Gleason knocked down some 3 pointers and distributed the ball while running the offense. The combination of Gui Ramos, Ethan Doescher, Zach Wells and Will Gazlay dominated in the paint on offense and defense. Joe Sciro provided some offense when needed as did Brendan Wilkins. Mike Bond provided some solid defense off the bench and Nick Donahue filled the roll of back-up point guard keeping the offense moving and getting the ball to open shooters. In the 2nd game against the Ct. Elite the Gold switched from zone to man to man defense and that caused the Elite to struggle. For the most part the players performed as they did in the first game. As the Gold was pulling away in the 2nd half Brendan Wilkins brought the crowd to its feet with a power dunk on the break that caused the Elite coach to call a time out. It was to little to late for the Elite as the Gold won going away by 20!
On Sunday the Gold played the NY Student Athlete Broncos and it was a very difficult match-up. Playing with out their starting center the undersized Gold took a beating on the boards. Size matters and in this case it was a miss match.
